(KGTV) - Parents in one North County school district are reacting to new numbers that show a sharp increase in the number of failing grades during virtual learning.Scotti Taylor has two children attending Mission Vista High: her son, a freshman, and her daughter, a junior. She says since the school year started in early September with virtual learning, both her children have struggled."Both of my kids normally have a 4.0 across the board. Now they're slipping down to low B's," said Taylor.Taylor says her daughter is struggling the most with virtual learning."I do think she's not as engaged. She's really struggling with focus. They don't have the same peer relationships or teacher relationships ... During class, she's mentioned many times that it's difficult to figure out what's going on. Sometimes she can't read the data on the screen," said Taylor.Taylor's children are not alone in their struggles. Vista Unified just released its six-week progress report for all of its high schools. During that time frame, it was all virtual learning.The number of F's that stand as the current class grade total more than 6,000. Last year at the same time, the number was more than 2,000, an increase of more than 200%. The number of students receiving F's in at least half of their classes increased from 3.9% in 2019 to 20.7% this year.In late October, Carlsbad Unified School District released an eight-week progress report and a similar finding, with F grades increasing by more than 300%.Taylor's kids are about to resume in-person learning Monday. If that option gets shut down again, she's worried about how her daughter's distance learning grades will affect her future."100% we are worried about how this is affecting college ... OMAHA, Neb. — A principal at a Nebraska elementary school has been placed on administrative leave after she released a memo discouraging teachers from putting up Christmas-themed decorations in their classrooms.Jennifer Sinclair of Manchester Elementary in Elkhorn, Nebraska, sent the memo teachers encouraging them to put up non-denominational winter decorations in the public school as opposed to Christmas-themed decorations."Red and green items," "candy canes" and "reindeers" were deemed unacceptable holiday decorations were specifically mentioned in the memo.The Elkhorn School District released its own statement saying the principal's memo did not reflect school policy.The principal also sent an apology letter, in which she stated that she was wrong to set such rules about classroom decorations.Manchester Elementary parents now stand divided on the issue."I feel that something was wrong with what she was doing. she was kinda enforcing or making the rest of her school think the way she did," said Vicki Dryden, a grandmother of a Manchester student.A mother of two Manchester students said she thinks the principal being put on administrative leave has blown the situation way out of proportion, especially since the principal has since sent an apology letter."I just don't think we could ask for a better principal," she said. 1355

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) — After a decade of delays, the Oceanside Beach Resort is weeks away from construction.The initial approval for the project happened 13 years ago when the City of Oceanside selected the developer. The project is located near the small white beach home featured in the movie Top Gun. 10News talked with Senior Vice President of S.D. Malkin Properties, Jeremy Cohen, who said they ran into many roadblocks along the way."We faced a lawsuit, we won, it was appealed, and we won that, and that kind of brought us to where we are today," said Cohen.The lawsuit claimed the program the city uses to share hotel taxes and support the development violated the state constitution. Along with a drawn-out lawsuit, they also were pushed back by the Great Recession and a period of delays in redevelopment across California.Cohen tells 10News, “Although it had been done dozens of times in the state before, it was the first time it was challenged. The court found it was completely constitutional, completely acceptable, and so it just delayed us for three years."Construction is now set to start in December 2018, just before the new year. “There will be a couple of months of excavation; then you’ll see a concrete superstructure, about six or seven stories,” Cohen detailed.The parking for the beach resort will be relocated to an underground garage. As far as the Top Gun house is concerned, it will be completely taken off the property. Historians will preserve the exterior and Cohen will update the inside.“We’re looking at it as a really special kind of ice cream place so everyone can come in and get a 'top cone' from the Top Gun house," Cohen said. 1674

(AP) — The CEO of SeaWorld Entertainment stepped down Monday, just months into his tenure leading the theme park company.Gustavo "Gus" Antorcha resigned from his job as the top executive at SeaWorld as well as his position on the company's board of directors."While I may have a difference of approach, I continue to believe in SeaWorld's strategy, mission, team and prospects," Antorcha said in a statement provided by the Orlando, Florida-based company.Before taking over the helm of SeaWorld in February, Antorcha was a top executive at Carnival Cruise Lines. He succeeded Joel Manby, who unexpectedly departed in 2018 after beginning SeaWorld's pivot away from live animal shows following years of protests and declining attendance.SeaWorld announced the end of its breeding program in March 2016, after years of pressure from animal rights advocates and shifting public opinion about orcas being held in captivity. The protests intensified after the release of the 2013 documentary "Blackfish," which focused on the life of Tilikum, a killer whale responsible for killing trainer Dawn Brancheau when he dragged her into a pool in front of shocked visitors in 2010.The company in the past year, though, has seen a reversal of fortune.
