LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three out of four Americans favor requiring people to wear face coverings while outside their homes to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, including a solid majority of Republicans. That's according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Support for wearing masks is overwhelming among Democrats, while 58% of Republicans say they back such policies. As coronavirus cases rise, about half of Americans now say they're extremely or very worried about themselves or family members becoming infected. The poll also finds that about two-thirds of Americans disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling the outbreak. 693

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - USC health officials Monday reported an "alarming" spike of 43 coronavirus cases confirmed in off-campus housing facilities, along with 100 students in quarantine due to possible exposure to COVID-19.According to Dr. Sarah Van Orman, head of USC Student Health, 14 cases were identified through general population testing among students not showing any symptoms, while 29 more were confirmed through contact tracing and testing of people showing symptoms or who were exposed to the illness."Los Angeles is at a critical juncture in public health," Orman wrote in a Monday virus update. "While no students have been hospitalized to this point, we all need to work together to protect those in our community who may be at higher risk of severe disease and prevent serious health outcomes for all. Your role in containing, or conversely, accelerating the rapid spread of COVID-19, can mean the difference between safely returning to a modified `new normal,' or having a prolonged period of remote-only academic experience and closed facilities."She urged students "in the vicinity of USC, especially those living with housemates or suite-mates," to get tested weekly through the university's "Pop Testing" program. Orman also noted that the spike in cases occurred despite restrictions on on-campus instruction and activities."It appears highly unlikely current conditions will significantly change in the weeks ahead," Orman said. "The county may grant a small number of exceptions for specific classes and other activities that cannot be delivered in a virtual setting, however, those decisions have not yet been made. Therefore, we continue to strongly discourage students from returning to the campus area until further notice."... For students who remain on or near campus in shared living arrangements, we strongly advise you to act with caution and strictly follow all guidelines for physical distancing -- six (feet) -- avoiding gatherings with other(s) outside your home, wearing face coverings around others to protect against respiratory droplets, and proceed with high adherence to hand hygiene and frequent surface contact cleaning." 2171

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A man who Los Angeles Police say repeatedly punched two women during a fight with a street vendor is charged with misdemeanor battery, the LA City Attorney’s office said Wednesday. Arka Sangbaran Oroojian, 30, was caught on camera attacking the women in downtown Los Angeles Jan. 26, City Attorney Mike Feuer said. Investigators said Oroojian began arguing with a hot dog vendor at 6th and Spring Streets when two women came to the vendor’s defense. The fought escalated when Oroojian punched one woman, police said. The second woman tripped Oroojian and he fell to the ground, eventually getting to his feet and hitting both women, according to officers. As they rose, police said Oroojian punched them again and ran away. The women suffered injuries including a concussion, broken finger, and bruises. Oroojian turned himself in to Los Angeles Police and is facing five counts of battery. If convicted, he could face up to 30 months in jail and ,000 in fines.Attention Los Angeles — this guy brutally punched two women at a hotdog stand on Jan. 26 in the area of 6th & Spring. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who said he was shot in a station parking lot was lying.Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said at a news conference late Saturday that Wednesday's "reported sniper assault was fabricated" by Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old deputy.A department statement on Thursday had said a round hit the top of Reinosa's shoulder, damaging his uniform shirt but failing to penetrate his flesh. But Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener says no bullets were recovered from the scene and detectives saw "no visible injuries." He says Reinosa eventually admitted making up the story and using a knife to cut the two holes in his shirt.Reinosa has been relieved of his duties and will face a criminal investigation. Wegener says Reinosa didn't explain a motive. 807

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s chief medical officers have raised the nation’s official COVID-19 alert level, meaning the virus is in general circulation and the transmission is high. The chief medical officers of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland say cases are rising “rapidly and probably exponentially.”They say they are acting on the advice of the Joint Biosecurity Center and raising the level from three to four, the second-highest level.Chief Scientific Officer Patrick Vallance warned that without further action, the U.K. could see 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October, the BBC reports. He said that would likely lead to about 200 deaths per day.Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said infection rates are rising among all of the nation’s age groups and said it’s not acceptable for people to ignore health guidelines to engage in risky activity.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce further curbs Tuesday to slow the spread of the virus.Britain already has the worst virus death toll in Europe. 1052
