SAN FRANCISCO — Firefighters say they hope dying winds will allow them to bear down on a wildfire that's exploded in the Northern California wine country.The Glass Fire, which was sparked on Sunday, tripled in size Monday and the San Jose Mercury News says some two dozen homes have burned.On Monday night, Cal Fire reported that the blaze was still 0% contained.About 70,000 people are under evacuation orders, including the entire town of Calistoga.Reports indicate that several iconic resorts in Napa County have been damaged or destroyed by the wildfire. 566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- When the pandemic hit city leaders opened the San Diego Convention Center doors to house those living on the streets. But as that time will soon come to an end, the San Diego Rescue Mission is working to give those in need a safe place to stay.The transition during the pandemic was not easy.“For people experiencing homelessness, the rates of COVID have been very low, but it was absolutely a struggle,” says Paul Armstrong with the San Diego Rescue Mission.The City of San Diego recently announced its plan to close the convention center by December. The state has reserved funds to help the city buy at least one hotel to house the homeless. Unfortunately, the hotel’s 340 units won’t be enough space for everyone.“As they ramp down their operations there, we have to be mindful to make sure we’re giving as many opportunities to the people in the convention center,” says Armstrong.The San Diego Rescue Mission is stepping in to help. Team members visit the convention center a few times during the week to notify the people of their programs.Their emergency shelter is available for women and children.They also have a year-long “Mission Academy.” It’s a three-semester program. Semester one focuses on wellness. Semester two is center around education and training.“Semester three is really preparing them, letting them focus on housing and building up,” says Armstrong. “Working and building up that savings so that they can transfer into a successful, sustainable life.”The Rescue Mission says they have seen a large success rate from the students who have completed Mission Academy. 1617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Sewage contaminated water is keeping swimmers out of the ocean in Imperial Beach. Late Tuesday afternoon, The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health extended an existing water contact closure to include all of Imperial Beach. The original closure was issued on June 27th for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline. According to the county, sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary. Eric Syverson is a life long resident of Imperial Beach. He keeps a close eye on what's happening in the Tijuana River Valley. "It was dry on Saturday, not dry on Sunday. Monday, we wondered what was going on and now, Tuesday, there was quite a bit of flow this morning and it just smelled horrible and it’s green,” said Syverson. The water was pooling under the bridge on the north side of Dairy Mart Road. "At six a.m. this morning, probably double the volume that’s flowing right now and the air was twice as bad, you couldn’t breath under this bridge this morning," said Syverson. According to a San Diego inspector with the International Boundary and Water Commission, there was transboundary flow Monday night into Tuesday morning from a ruptured potable water line. The IBWC estimates 300,000 gallons of treated and untreated wastewater flowed into the U.S. Initially, the IBWC said the figure was much higher; roughly two million gallons. The number was revised after the inspector determined their gauging station was not accurately recording the flows. Members of Citizens Against Sewage are skeptical. "I’m looking at the gauge data from the river gauge from IBWC's information. We put values on those numbers that they provide, and it’s over seven milllion gallons,” said Lance Rodgers, Co-Founder of Citizens Against Sewage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thursday San Diego city leaders announced the city will be joining AARP’s network of age-friendly communities.This means elected officials have made a commitment to prepare for San Diego’s aging population with policies that will focus on AARP’s “8 Domains of Livability” which include communication, civic participation, housing and transportation.At a press conference in front of San Diego City Hall, Councilmember Chris Ward said the city is committed to building a “sustainable and inclusive city where San Diegans of all ages and abilities can have long, active, and productive lives.”San Diego now joins Chula Vista, La Mesa, and the County of San Diego in becoming an age-friendly community.“San Diego’s membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and our local partnership with The San Diego Foundation are essential to helping residents live easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Ward.“This is just the beginning, the hard work begins, the implementation part of it is where it’s at,” said Joe Garbanzos with AARP California. “It’s good to see that the city recognized that this is good framework to use to help advance livable communities in the area.”Kevin Mayor Faulconer was not present at the news conference, but wrote the following statement.“Here in San Diego we’re focused on building more affordable housing, increasing mobility choices, and creating livable communities to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans, including older adults,” said Faulconer. “We also recognize the importance of preparing for San Diego’s aging population with policies that enhance healthy aging, civic participation, and social inclusion. Neighbors were mixed on whether it will affect crime.Police and neighbors celebrated the new curfew Friday at City Heights Square Mini Park. Police said since January 2019 there's been 217 crimes reported within 1,500 feet of the park, ranging from assault to theft.READ RELATED: Neighbors celebrate nightly curfew at San Diego parksRonald Tieken said he spearheaded the initiative, putting together a survey that he said 50 seniors in the building bordering the park responded to. He said the curfew is the first step in turning the tide in the neighborhood.Other neighbors disagree."It's probably going to up the rate of crime in this neighborhood," Ephraim Denmon III said they just need more people who will stand up to crime to fill the park. He said that or hire a security guard."If grown folks are in a grown folks park then they should let grown folks be grown folks," he said arguing the curfew takes away from the neighbors surrounding the park."You have your low income and your seniors, the seniors spend most of their time out here after midnight...
