KENOSHA, Wis. — A man was air-flighted to a local hospital after he was shot by a Kenosha police officer Sunday evening, police say.Kenosha police said the man was shot near a home at 40th and 28th streets in Kenosha just after 5 p.m. Officers were called to a 'domestic incident' at the location.A family member confirmed to Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the man was Jacob Blake, 29.Police did not say what led up to the shooting but said that officers offered immediate aid.Kenosha police said Blake is in serious condition. A large crowd gathered near the area Sunday evening.A photo of Jacob Blake, provided by his family.A short video circulating on social media shows a man, presumably Blake, walking toward a vehicle. The video shows that police shoot the man in the back as he opened the driver's door of the car.Blake's family says children were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department and Wisconsin State Patrol are currently investigating the incident. No other details were released.Crowds of protesters gathered in Kenosha after the video of the shooting spread on social media. Fires were set to dumpsters meant to block off roads in the area. The Kenosha County Courthouse and Administration Building were both closed Monday due to overnight damage from the unrest.Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers released a statement regarding the shooting late Sunday evening."Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries. While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country," said Evers. "We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith. And we stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites."Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, has been retained to represent Blake's family. He issued this statement Monday: “We all watched the horrific video of Jacob Blake being shot in the back several times by Kenosha police. Even worse, his three sons witnessed their father collapse after being riddled with bullets. Their irresponsible, reckless, and inhumane actions nearly cost the life of a man who was simply trying to do the right thing by intervening in a domestic incident. It’s a miracle he’s still alive. We will seek justice for Jacob Blake and for his family as we demand answers from the Kenosha Police Department. How many more of these tragic 'while Black' tragedies will it take until the racial profiling and undervaluing of Black lives by the police finally stops?”Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden also released a statement, calling for "an immediate, full and transparent investigation" and added that "the officers must be held accountable."This story was originally published by Mayra Monroy on WTMJ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 3365
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Imagine getting a COVID-19 test from the comfort of your own home. That's what Costco is offering by selling saliva test kits online. They come at a steep price. The basic test kit is listed for 9.99, while a kit with video observation is 9.99.The KSHB I-team reached out to Costco for more information about the products. However, the company's corporate communications team was unwilling to respond to any questions, adding that it is not staffed to do so."As always our focus is to have merchandise available for our members at low warehouse prices," a spokesman wrote in an email.According to the Costco website, the kits are administered by Azova, which is a telemedicine platform.A fact sheet for patients found on the Azova website shows the test used is the P23 Labs TaqPath SARS CoV-2 Assay. The test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, like many tests, it has received emergency use authorization from the agency. That means the makers of the test need to continually submit data to the FDA, which will evaluate the information and study the accuracy of diagnoses.Azova claims 98% of positive tests and 99% of negative test results are accurate."Saliva testing can be very accurate. It is probably chosen (for at-home testing) because the chance of having user error is much less than say a nasal swab," Dr. Dana Hawkinson of the University of Kansas Health System said.A customer who purchases a kit from Costco must complete a health assessment online with Azova and register for a lab order and test kit.The actual kit should come the next day, but results won't arrive for one to three days after the lab receives the sample. The kit with video observation, however, promises results in 24-48 hours."If that's the only thing that you're using for diagnosis and you have symptoms, you need to be isolated in your home until those results come back," Hawkinson added. In his opinion, it's not the most efficient way to get tested once the shipping time and wait for results are factored into the equation. However, Hawkinson believes we may see more options like this in the future."The technology is out there. It is progressing quickly," he said. "Hopefully as time goes on we do get more access to people so there can be readily available testing with efficient and accurate test results."The Costco website says both test kits are eligible for flexible medical spending accounts.Although the CARES Act mandated that insurers cover COVID testing costs, Dr. Kent Sepkowitz, a CNN medical analyst, writes whether insurers "will pay fully for more bells and whistles program such as that provided by Costco likely will vary plan to plan."This story was first reported by Cat Reid at KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 2794
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — You likely know the feeling. You drop your phone and it breaks. It falls in water. It doesn't feel good. Maybe your phone just runs slow. All these issues can drive a person to run out and drop more than ,000 on a new phone. But experts say there’s still hope for your old device. The cellphone repair business is a billion industry. One of the biggest contributors is fixing cracked iPhone screens. “Yeah, I’ve broken a lot of phones… Probably like at least seven,” Jade Collins said. She brought her iPhone 7 Plus to iRepair at 55th and Troost. It had a cracked screen. “Someone else dropped it at a bar. I wasn't happy. I tried to make an appointment at The Apple Store, but they didn't have one available for a few days. I need it fixed now,” she explained. iRepair is one of the top Yelp reviewed cellphone repair shops in the metro. Scott Russell owns the business.“I'll tell you if it's fixable or if you need something new,” Russel said. A new screen replacement for iPhones, his most common service, costs to 0 depending on the model. “I just try to treat everybody like it's my own phone,” Russell said as he used a tiny screwdriver to take apart the phone. At Setcell in Westport, the hum of what looks like a hairdryer mixes with the chime of the door opening with new customers. A tech was finishing repairs to a new iPhone 6. Setcell is another area cellphone repair company that is highly reviewed on Yelp. It’s owned by Tyler Herndon.“We're becoming more dependent on our phones, and we use them more. We're harder on them,” he said. Setcell charges to 9 to replace a cracked iPhone screen depending on the model. Third-party parts vs. Apple partsThe Apple Store requires customers to make an appointment at one of its two locations in the metro. If your phone doesn't have Apple Care, which is protection Apple sells with new products, it costs 9 - 9 to replace an iPhone screen.Apple Stores are the only locations in the metro where you can get authentic Apple parts. Third-party repair businesses have to use third-party parts. The quality of the third-party parts depends on the repair shop’s supply chain. Many of the top-rated shops import the best available parts. However, Apple doesn't allow repair shops to use Apple parts. 2391
Katherine Johnson, the woman who hand-calculated the trajectory for America's first trip to space, turns 100 today. Before the arrival of electronic data processors, aka, computers in the 1960s, humans -- mainly women -- comprised the workforce at NASA known as the "Computer Pool."Black women, especially, played a crucial role in the pool, providing mathematical data for NASA's first successful space missions, including Alan Shepherd's 1961 mission and John Glenn's pioneering orbital spaceflight.Principal among them was Johnson. But her work -- and that of the "Computer Pool" -- barely earned a mention in pop culture space tributes. That changed, thanks to "Hidden Figures," a best-selling novel later turned into an Oscar-nominated movie. 753
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former U.S. Secret Service agent who worked on a presidential detail for the late George H.W. Bush reminisced about the 41st president of the United States on Saturday after learning of Bush's passing.Mauri Sheer spent two years with the Bush family during his presidency before he was appointed as a U.S. Marshal in the Kansas City area. Sheer, who worked in the Secret Service for nearly three decades, served six presidents."From Gerald Ford through George W. Bush," Sheer said. But it was his time with George H.W. Bush, who died Friday night at his home in Texas, that he thought about most this weekend."He was constantly moving, and when he would move, he would move fast," Sheer said. "If you were working right ahead of him in the perimeter around him and you were right ahead of him, you'd have to be careful if you slowed down because he'd run you right over."Sheer said that same energy went into his golf game. "They say he played golf almost like you play hockey," Sheer said. "He'd hit the ball and the ball's almost done moving and he's just constantly moving."Sheer said the moment he'd never forget was the day Ronald Reagan was released from the hospital after he'd been shot. Sheer said he and Bush were running a 10-kilometer race that morning. "He didn't run as fast as he thought he was going to and he was pressed for time and he was behind and he was afraid he was going to miss it," Sheer said.As usual, Bush didn't miss a beat.Sheer said that's one thing he'll always remember. He also wanted others to know Bush was a fundamentally good person."The main thing that I think people should know about George H.W. Bush is that he's one of the most decent guys I'd ever been around," Sheer said.He also will remember Bush as a generous man who cared deeply about others.During the holiday season, Sheer said Bush would plan his schedule around his agents, so they could be home with their families for the holidays. 2001
