On Sunday afternoon, a gunman stormed a bar/arcade in Jacksonville, Florida, killing people attending a Madden NFL video game tournament.Tournaments such as the one in Jacksonville are part of a growing global trend — eSports, or competitive video gaming.What are eSports?eSports is the broad term that encompasses any sort of competitive video gaming. The tournaments and leagues are often hosted by video game studios — EA Sports, the maker of Madden NFL 19, was hosting the tournament in Jacksonville on Sunday. Early eSports tournaments focused on niche games and attracted mainly hard-core gamers as spectators, but that didn't stop spectators from turning out in droves. eSports has sold out arenas in China, Japan and even in the US as spectators watched the best of the best play games like World of Warcraft, League of Legends and Overwatch.But in the past few years, eSports has been going mainstream.In 2018, the NBA launched the NBA 2K League — a season-long competition featuring gamers playing an NBA video game for teams affiliated with actual NBA franchises. In addition, more than 60 colleges and universities throughout the country have eSports teams, some of which offers scholarships to gamers.Where are people watching eSports?The popularity of eSports has exploded in recent years, thanks to the streaming service Twitch. The website allows gamers to live-stream their gaming sessions, and some of the top-ranked gamers play in front of millions of viewers who live stream from their homes.Swedish gamer PewDiePie has more than 72 million subscribers combined between his Twitch and YouTube channels —despite making controversial comments in past months.Another gamer, Ninja, regularly gains 50,000 viewers per stream. ODESSA, Texas (KGSTV) - A man with San Diego ties who survived the Texas shooting rampage Saturday is recounting the moment he drove into the crosshairs.Daniel Munoz, 28, moved from San Diego to Texas a year ago to work in the oil industry. He was in his car on the way to meet a friend for a drink, when he yielded to a car coming off an interstate. He immediately saw what appeared to be a rifle barrel in the hands of a driver and the shooter, Seth Ator.Earlier, the shooting spree had started with a routine traffic stop, when Ator suddenly started shooting at officers. During the ensuing chase in the Odessa/Midland area, he shot at other drivers. One of those drivers was Munoz. After he saw the rifle barrel, he told the Associated Press, "This is my street instincts. When a car is approaching you and you see a gun of any type, just get down. Luckily I got down … sure enough, I hear the shots go off. He let off at least three shots on me."Munoz believes one shot hit the engine, another struck the driver's side window, and a third hit a rear window. Some shattered glass punctured his left shoulder, causing him to bleed heavily. As he made the frenzied drive to a hospital, the shooting rampage continued.The gunman would hijack a mail truck, before ramming police vehicles outside a theater, where police would shoot and kill him. In the end, Ator would kill seven and injure 22. As for Munoz, he says he's physically okay but shaken."I'm just trying to turn the corner and I got shot. I'm getting shot at? What's the world coming to? For real? I'm just minding my own business," he told the Associated Press.Officials have identified another man, 62-year-old San Diegan, Marco Corral, as among the injured. 1731

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- It's a 3,100-mile bike ride that starts from the Oceanside Pier Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Buzz Ponce, 69, will be riding his bike coast to coast from Oceanside to St. Augustine, Florida.  He is doing it to raise money for the Warrior's Heart Foundation. The foundation helps active military members, veterans and first responders dealing PTSD, alcohol abuse and drug addiction. Buzz says he started planning the bike ride two years ago. At first, he says it was all about seeing if he could do it, but then realized it would be better if he could use it to help others. "It really flashed on me that I should do something other than just about me. And that’s when I came across the idea of trying to raise money for a cause," Ponce said. The organization has a treatment center in San Antonio.  Ponce says his goal is to raise ,000 to hopefully start a scholarship for people that need to travel to the center.People can donate Buzz's cause here. If all goes as scheduled, Buzz will be in St. Augustine on July 1.  1091
