San Diego (KGTV)- After spending nearly months in the ICU, a local healthcare worker, who tested positive for COVID-19, is sharing his story."At that time, I thought for certain I was going to die."Ezequiel Melendez Jr., also known as Zeke, spent 57 days in the hospital after contracting COVID-19.The Respiratory Care Technician says he's always been an active and healthy person. He did not have any underlying medical conditions. His struggle with coronavirus started in early March with flu-like symptoms."I didn't meet the criteria at the time for COVID testing," says Melendez. "You were supposed temperature of 102; mine was 100. They told me don't go back to work until 24 hours with no symptoms."Melendez says seven days later, his symptoms got worse."Next thing I know, I'm laying on a gurney preparing for intubation with an endotracheal tube."Melendez's girlfriend, Grace Carbajal, who is also a healthcare worker, says it was a challenge seeing him sick."Being a nurse and not being able to be there at the bedside, also being a loved one and not being able to be there for him and with him, was very difficult," says Carbajal.After spending weeks in the hospital, Melendez was released in late May. He says it will be a while until he feels like himself again. He is still under doctors' care and has physical therapy weekly.He also has a message for everyone as the pandemic continues."We need protection and everyone doing their part to wear masks," says Melendez. "I was one who thought it was just something like the flu, maybe exaggerated at the time. But when it happened to me, it was a smack to the face."Melendez says he would like to thank everyone for the support and those who donated to the GoFund Me that was created while he was in the hospital. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When a significant wind gust led to an emergency response at SeaWorld’s Bayside Skyride Monday, San Diego Fire-Rescue technical rescue teams and San Diego Lifeguards were ready. The teams conduct training sessions at least twice a year on the ride, which has gondolas traveling through the air for a view above Mission Bay. Monday night at 7:30 p.m., five gondolas became stuck with 16 people on board, including a toddler. “She was a little cold, because I think she'd been up there for a little bit, so that was my priority,” said firefighter Sean Murphy. The park also stayed in contact with guests through an intercom. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the second time this week, Rancho Bernardo High School Principal Dave LeMaster met with concerned parents Thursday regarding Monday's school threat.Students arrived for class Monday morning to find violent threats spray-painted onto around 20 locations on campus. They all indicated a school shooting would happen that day at noon, with messages including "murder, blood, chaos" and "Florida was nothing".LeMaster told 10News police arrived quickly and within minutes determined there was no credible threat.An email notification went out to parents around 8:30am, after class had started, although LeMaster said if there was a danger, notification would have been sent out much sooner."We work with law enforcement to make sure the situation is secure and everyone is safe, and oftentimes, communication comes after that,” said Poway Unified School District spokesperson Christine Paik.Word of the incident quickly spread among students and their family members, which provides a challenge for administrators to inform parents."In the age of social media and texting, sometimes those unofficial communications will beat us to it ," Paik said. "But we have a responsibility to be accurate before we are able to put out those messages.”One parent told 10News she thinks the school should immediately notify parents of any threat to the school to give them the option of keeping their kids away from campus, but other parents worry that doing so could cause unnecessary panic and disruption.PUSD said it will work on improving the time it takes to send notifications to parents.
