ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in Escondido have made an arrest in connection with a cold case homicide that happened in 1986.Police said at a news conference that Nathan Eugene Mathis, 62, was arrested for the 1986 murder of 75-year-old Richard Finney.According to police, Finney was stabbed more than 30 times at his apartment on November 13, 1986.The case was reopened in 2007 by a retired detective and FBI agent. After reopening the case, authorities say they were able to come up with a blood profile."We made a promise to that family several years ago that we'd do everything we could to solve the brutal slaying of their 75-year-old grandfather," said Chuck Gaylor, a cold case investigator. During the news conference, police said blood and a fingerprint found at the scene matched Mathis.Mathis was arrested after police obtained a search warrant.Finney's family says they are glad justice is finally being served. "Never thought the day would come. It's been 32 years so finally to have this happen is just fabulous! As people start letting house cleaners back into their homes, there are new protocols you should know about and new challenges out there because of COVID-19.The home cleaning industry was hit hard by the pandemic, because of everyone's fear. But as things start opening up, people want the service back. Brian Wiersma is a strategic initiatives and branch operations manager for Merry Maids.“A lot of our customers, they need our help cleaning their home and when you look at the CDC guidelines, the first step in maintaining a healthy home is to clean it before you disinfect it,” said Wiersma.He says, like everyone else, Merry Maids has had to adjust and adapt to every new recommendation from the CDC. No masks at first, and now masks all the time. There are new protocols for their team members and for their clients.“If you’re sick please, let us know even if it’s not COVID,” said Wiersma. “Let us know if you’re sick, so we can reschedule you just to be overly cautious.”They're asking employees to self-monitor, pay attention to everything they might feel, COVID-19 or not. They suggest clients either leave or remain in one part of the home. They bring their own equipment and clean the cleaning supplies when they're done.“As the team leaves the home, they take off the mask, they disinfect the kit before they put it in their vehicle to go to the next home, so they’re not taking contaminants into their vehicle and taking it to another customer,” said Wiersma.There are training videos, daily checklists, and they've even held meetings about how to take your gloves off.“It’s little things but in the same respect, it’s important things,” said Wiersma. “You take all these steps to be careful and precautious and at the very last step, if you don’t take your gloves off right you, might as well not have done the rest of them as far as keeping the team safe.”Angel Gatewood, 24, has been cleaning for Merry Maids for the past year. The hardest part for her, someone who loves customers and customer service, has been keeping her client relationships at a distance.“I still try to maintain that personal relationship with my customers which I think is important because I’m in their house every other week touching their things,” said Gatewood. “Your home is your personal bubble. When somebody enters it, you have to have that trust and I like to maintain that."She loves to connect with people and loves her detail-oriented job, but she has asthma and now has to be even more cautious than ever.“I personally take those extra steps,” she said. “I take my inhaler in every time. I wear two pairs of gloves. I also have eczema. It’s a double problem. I wear two pairs of gloves and the mask every time.”Wiersma says while COVID-19 has been challenging, it's about to get busier than ever as people realize health starts in the home."Merry Maids has been around for 40 years and Service Master for 90 years of cleaning and disinfecting, we'll stay who we are and that has helped us sustain through the crisis, but come out of it on a stronger footing." 3118

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters have stopped the forward rate of spread after a fire, dubbed the Fallsbrea Fire, sparked in Fallbrook Sunday afternoon. “Too many times, man” Chris Beucler sighed. He could not believe he was witnessing yet another wildfire approaching his home. "I looked out the window, and just beyond our lots down here I see a huge flame up in the air,” Beucler said. Early Sunday afternoon, Beucler and his wife were putting up artwork in his home, when the flickers brought back memories. It seemed like just yesterday, he experienced the Lilac Fire, which destroyed many of his neighbor's houses. The Lilac Fire started on December 7, 2017. The 4,100-acre blaze destroyed 157 and damaged 64 structures. "I've been up here 16 years, and this is probably the sixth time these things have happened. So it's just high alert all the time,” Beucler said. Cal Fire and North County Fire responded to the scene of the Fallbrea fire that sparked near Highway 76 and Ramona Drive around 12:30 p.m. When they arrived, the fire was only about a half-acre. But it quickly spread up the slope to about five acres. While the region is under a Red Flag warning, flames spread before gusts took over North County, Cal Fire said. "Make no mistake about it, while we are expecting a red flag condition to take hold of the county, we are not under those conditions as we speak,” Cal Fire San Diego Captain, Issac Sanchez said. “This was absolutely slope and fuel driven. Mostly burning in grass, which burns very quickly and very hot.”Firefighters are expecting conditions to worsen and to work overtime. But for now, veteran wildfire survivor Beucler is relieved. The walking trail that he created six years ago and preps twice a year saved his home once again. "We got a natural firebreak that we built for a trail to go around our house, and they're saying that's what saved our part,” Beucler said. According to Cal Fire, several structures were threatened, but the forward rate of spread has been stopped. The fire was 100 percent contained by about 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.  2216
