NEW YORK CITY — In what New York City's mayor is calling a "Christmas miracle," an NYPD officer is conscious and communicating after he was shot in the back in Brooklyn while responding to a 911 call for a domestic dispute, police said. The incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday night.Police said the alleged shooter has been arrested and the gun was recovered. A bulletproof vest protected the 27-year-old officer, who was rushed to a local hospital after being shot near Prospect Place and Ralph Avenue. It went into the vest, but didn't penetrate the officer's skin, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. The shooter allegedly threatened his girlfriend, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The girlfriend's mother repeatedly called 911, begging for police to come, Shea said. She said the boyfriend had threatened to shoot the home up. As officers on the scene interviewed the daughter, her boyfriend arrived. He shot an officer and then ran, Shea said. Other officers pursued and arrested him a few blocks away. Body camera video shows officers repeatedly tell the shooter to drop his gun. He put it down on the sidewalk and was taken into custody."Because the NYPD was there, that woman is alive right now," de Blasio said. "Because our officer put himself in harm's way, an innocent woman is alive."The officer’s precise condition wasn’t immediately clear, but police officials said the officer was awake and responsive and has since been released from the hospital.De Blasio and Shea spoke to the officer's parents."They felt that this was a Christmas miracle that their son was alive and well," de Blasio said. The NYPD asked people to avoid the area. People were advised to expect a police presence in the area."It's Christmas Eve. This is a time when you would expect peace, you would expect harmony," de Blasio said. This story was originally published by Aliza Chasan on WPIX in New York City. 1948

NEW YORK (AP) — The one-time bookselling giant Barnes & Noble is being acquired by a hedge fund for 6 million. The national chain that many blamed for the demise of independent bookstores has been ravaged by Amazon.com and other online sellers. Independent bookstores have also persisted in the face of digital publishing. The company said in October that it might put itself up for sale after it was approached by a number of potential buyers, including founder Leonard Riggio who opened Barnes & Noble stores across the country and turned it into a superstore.Barnes & Noble said Friday that it's being acquired by Elliott Management for .50 per share, an approximately 9% percent premium to the company's Thursday closing stock price. Elliott bought the U.K. bookseller Waterstones in June 2018.Waterstones CEO James Daunt will also take on the role of CEO at Barnes & Noble. The sale, valued at about 3 million including debt, is targeted to close in the third quarter if approved by regulators and shareholders.Shares of the New York company jumped 11% before the opening bell. 1111

New research shows women are more optimistic about aging and retirement than ever.Jane Lafave is using retirement to follow her passion. She volunteers at a refugee resettlement agency, making sure people are prepared when applying for jobs.Ironically, it took her leaving her job, to be able to do this.“My whole career really was balancing my children and my husband, you know, my work and all that kind of thing,” Lafave says.Lafave spent decades working as a certified public accountant, and she retired at the age of 57.“It was just time,” she says. “I needed more time and space in my life to do things other than work. That led her to the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, which placed her at the African Community Center. For two days a week, she helps refugees adjust to life in a new country.“This is just a great gift for me to serve other people who have had a much harder life than I’ve had,” Lafave says.Lafave isn't alone.A new survey from TD Ameritrade found women are increasingly viewing their retirement years with optimism.“The Women and Aging Survey” found 62 percent of women said retirement will be, "the most liberating phase of my life," and 72 percent said after years of focusing on others, aging finally gives them an, "opportunity to focus on myself." Eighty-three percent said aging provides a fresh chance to "reach new goals."Nearly 9 of 10 women surveyed said, 'it's important to me to retain a sense of higher purpose as I age.“I feel that this is my time in life to give back,” Lafave says. That's what she is doing here.“I think that's one of the gifts of age is that we've become much more aware of purpose and the time is short and we need to use it.” 1686

NEWPORT BEACH (CNS) - President Donald Trump is scheduled to come to Orange County Sunday for a private fundraiser at tech mogul Palmer Luckey's estate, it was reported Friday. The news came Thursday, just as latest fundraising numbers showed the president falling behind former Vice President Joe Biden in campaign cash, The Orange County Register reported.Biden reportedly raised a record-breaking 3 million in September to Trump's 7.8 million. And Biden reported 2 million in cash heading into October vs. Trump's 1 million.Invitations for Sunday's fundraiser at Luckey's Newport Beach home show tickets ranging from ,800 for an individual admission to 0,000 for a couple to attend and take a photo with the president, according to the Register. Ric Grenell, Trump's former acting Director of National Intelligence, is also slated to be a special guest at the event. The event was originally slated to take place Oct. 6, but was postponed after Trump contracted the coronavirus. The president says he no longer feels ill and his doctors have cleared him for public appearances. But some experts have expressed concern about him holding in-person events less than two weeks after he was released from the hospital, and they continue to discourage any large public gatherings.Luckey has donated 5,600 to Trump's campaign this cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records. And he's donated more than .7 million total this cycle, with much of the rest of those funds going to GOP committees and Republicans running for seats, such as Michelle Steel and Young Kim, who are both trying to unseat Democratic members of Congress.Luckey is a Long Beach native who was 19 when he co-founded the Oculus Rift virtual-reality system in Irvine. His company sold for an estimated billion to Facebook in 2014. 1838
