An Arizona Coyotes hockey player was arrested in Scottsdale. Scottsdale police said 27-year-old Richard Panik was arrested for trespassing. The hockey player reportedly refused to leave the entrance of a local restaurant on April 8 at 8:50 p.m. According to police, Panik appeared to be intoxicated during his contact with officers. Panik was booked into Scottsdale City Jail for criminal trespass and later released with a criminal citation. The 27-year-old played 37 games during the 2017-2018 season with the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes. As federal government aid begins to wane, hotels across the US says that the majority of jobs in the industry could disappear in the coming months.According to a Hotel & Lodging Association survey, 74% of hotel jobs could be eliminated if additional federal funds are not dispersed to the hospitality industry. Of those surveyed, 69% of operators said that hotel stays have been cut by more than half.The Hotel & Lodging Association says that one in 25 US jobs are supported by the hotel industry, equaling 8 million jobs.According to the federal government, the hospitality industry in total had 16 million employees before the pandemic. In April, that number was cut in half. Federal statistics show about half of the jobs lost in the spring have been regained. But many of those jobs remain in peril.Two-thirds of hotels say that they will go out of business if current revenues remain constant for the next six months."It's time for Congress to put politics aside and prioritize the many businesses and employees in the hardest-hit industries. Hotels are cornerstones of the communities they serve, building strong local economies and supporting millions of jobs," said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. An Oceanside City Councilman is proposing a tax credit for companies who hire Oceanside residents and pay them at least ,000 a year.Councilman Christopher Rodriguez says he wants to reward Oceanside businesses who hire locally. The proposal, which the City Council will initially discuss Wednesday, would pay Oceanside companies ,500 for each new hire who lives in Oceanside and is paid that minimum salary. "It's a big problem, housing affordability in North County," Rodriguez said. "North County, Coastal Oceanside, we're up and coming. It's more expensive to live here for sure."Rodriguez said his proposal is a starting point and that he is willing to move on the numbers based on council feedback. If there is support, city staff could analyze the proposal and return in 120 days with a concrete plan.Business groups such as the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce expressed support for the plan. Peter Rodriguez, an operations manager at Beachfront Only, a vacation rental property management firm, said the credit could help his company. He says Beachfront Only often hires Oceanside residents because they are close to most of their properties. The company has two openings that pay about ,000 a year.
