TOKYO (AP) — The U.S. says Americans aboard a quarantined ship will be flown back home on a chartered flight Sunday, but that they will face another two-week quarantine. About 380 Americans are aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has docked at Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo. So far, 285 people from the ship have tested positive for a new virus. The passengers have been quarantined on the ship since Feb. 5. There's a new concept to contraception, and you may start seeing more advertising for it soon.It's an app, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just gave it the green light to start marketing.Natural Cycles claims to help prevent pregnancy by allowing women to track the days they are most fertile. It uses a woman's monthly cycle information and their body temperature, which users input daily.The app provides a calendar of green and red days. Green days indicate you're not fertile, while red days suggest you are.The app claims its’s 93 percent effective if used correctly. That estimate may be high though.Planned Parenthood, in general, claims fertility awareness is only between 76 and 88 percent effective.Regardless, the app does nothing to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. The president of Advocates for Youth, a national organization that promotes young people’s rights to sexual health information, says there are some concerns surrounding the app.“Especially for many younger women, their cycle isn’t exactly regular, so if you've got an irregular cycle or you really don’t understand the implications of using fertility awareness, it’s a tough method to use,” explains Deb Hauser. “It’s not by any means foolproof.”The Natural Cycles app costs for a year or a month.The free trial offer isn't really going to help you, because it takes a few months for the app to get to know your body. 1445
There is a good chance this pandemic is having you go to the gas station less often. Fewer trips to the store, after all, means fewer fill-ups.While that may be good for your wallet, it's bad news for governments who rely on gas taxes to fund transportation construction projects. THE ISSUEFor every gallon of gas you buy, 18 cents goes to the federal government and the Highway Trust Fund. That money is then used to pay for transportation projects around the country. Additionally, each state imposes their own gas tax which can range from 14 cents to 57 cents per gallon of fuel. States use that money to fund transportation projects of their own. Simple economics suggest that when Americans drive less, there will be a loss in revenue for states. States are also losing money with sales taxes, tolls and DMV registrations, which is making a problem even worse. WHAT'S BEING CANCELED"The state is collecting less of that money," Alison Black, Chief Economist with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, said. Black's organization has been tracking which states are cutting projects.Currently, 14 states have announced project delays or cancellations, valued at nearly .5 billion. These include Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia. There are 19 local governments and authorities that have announced project delays or cancellations, totally more than .54 billion. Ten states or local areas have vetoed, canceled, or postponed legislative initiatives or ballot measures related to transportation funding because of the pandemic. Tinder's parent company Match Group is suing competitor Bumble, accusing the female-friendly dating app of patent infringement and stealing trade secrets.The lawsuit, filed Friday in Texas, says Bumble is virtually identical to Tinder, the app that popularized the swipe right to like, swipe left to dislike functionality.Bumble copied the "world-changing, card swipe-based, mutual opt-in premise" of Tinder, the lawsuit says.The complaint also says that Bumble's co-creators are ex-Tinder employees, and the app has rolled out two new features that were "learned of and developed confidentially while at Tinder."Bumble has become a fierce competitor to Tinder since it launched in 2014. Bumble's differentiating factor is that only women can make the first move. But Match confirmed last month it plans to launch that feature in its own app.In the complaint, Match says it "applauds Bumble's efforts at empowering women, both in its app and offline" and "cares deeply both about its women users and about women's issues generally.""This case is simply about forcing Bumble to stop competing with Match and Tinder using Match's own inventions, patented designs, trademarks, and trade secrets," it says.The lawsuit is the first time that Match Group, which also owns dating sites Plenty of Fish and Match.com, has enforced the patents it secured on swiping and double opt-ins for dating matches on Tinder, according to a company spokesperson.Tinder and Bumble have had a complicated history.Bumble was launched by Whitney Wolfe Herd, an early employee at Tinder.Wolfe Herd left Tinder in 2014 after alleging sexual harassment and discrimination. The case was eventually settled. Ex-Tinder employees Chris Gulczynski and Sarah Mick joined Herd to start Bumble more than three years ago. Gulczynski and Mick, who are designers, are at the center of the stolen secret allegations in the suit.The two had knowledge of an "undo" button talked about at Tinder, according to the complaint. That feature was "nearly, if not literally, identical" to Bumble's backtrack feature, the lawsuit says. The backtrack feature allows users to go back in time to "like" someone they may have accidentally passed on.Gulczynski and Mick also helped implement photo messaging at Bumble, something Gulczynski had allegedly mocked up a design for while at Tinder.In a statement, a Match Group spokesperson said the company is "committed to protecting the intellectual property and proprietary data that defines our business,"Bumble did not immediately respond to request for comment.
