PROVO, Utah — Unproven conspiracy theories about COVID-19 have caused a group of people to try and breach a local hospital, officials say.The group, fueled by the unsubstantiated theory that hospitals are misrepresenting capacity levels, has attempted to break into the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. The hospital recently reported during a Provo City Council meeting "that a few individuals without a medical need have attempted to gain physical access to the facility with the intent try to confirm fake conspiracy theories — such as hospitals are not busy and that reports of the COVID-19 surge are false."It was unclear if anyone was arrested or cited for the disturbances."Hospital staff have also fielded some telephone calls regarding similar false conspiracy theories. Although these situations are few and isolated, stopping attempts to gain inappropriate access and responding to fake conspiracy theories diverts attention from providing lifesaving care provided at the hospitals," said Intermountain Healthcare, which operates Utah Valley Hospital, in a statement. "COVID-19 is real and the hospital is seeing large increases in patients with the virus. Staff are stretched and are working many extra hours to meet community needs. We ask the public to join with us, mask up, wash hands, social distance, and stay home when sick so we can care overcome the challenges of this pandemic in our communities."On Thursday, Utah saw its highest number of new COVID-19 cases in a single day — nearly 4,000 and nine new deaths.Hospital capacity is at 87%, meaning many medical centers are running out of places and staff to take care of those who contract the deadly virus. The surge in cases in Utah comes as the virus spreads uncontrollably around the country. Thursday marked a record with 150,000 new cases and was the 10th consecutive day in which 100,000 people were diagnosed with the virus. This story was originally published by Ben Winslow on KSTU in Salt Lake City. 1984

Republicans are hoping to keep control of the Senate and expand their majority in the upper chamber of Congress, while Democrats are looking to stave off losses and flip as many seats as possible as voters head to the polls in Tuesday's 2018 midterm elections.Despite a seemingly energized grassroots electorate, the Democratic Party has been viewed as a long shot to take back control of the Senate where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority of 51 seats to 49 seats for Democrats.Democrats face a daunting Senate map in the 2018 midterms and have been forced to defend 10 seats in states that President Donald Trump won in the 2016 presidential election, including North Dakota, Montana, West Virginia, Indiana and Missouri.PHOTOS: Voter turnout around the nationRepublicans do not have to defend as many vulnerable incumbents as Democrats in the midterms. Only a handful of seats are viewed as potential pickup opportunities for Democrats, with the party hoping to flip seats in closely-watched races in states such as Arizona and Nevada, as well as longer shot attempts in Tennessee and Texas. If Republicans maintain control, it will put the GOP in position to continue driving forward the President's agenda in at least one chamber of Congress. If Democrats manage to win the Senate, it would be a major setback for Republicans and a significant victory for a party that has been locked out of power in Washington since Trump won the White House.Control of the Senate will determine whether key elements of the President's agenda will be thwarted or advanced, including judicial confirmations and executive branch appointments. It will also determine whether Senate Democrats can launch investigations into controversies that have surrounded Trump while he has been in office and before he was elected, including allegations surrounding obstruction of justice, Trump's finances and potential Russian collusion. 1930

RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- A group of residents in Rancho Pe?asquitos is sounding the alarm about a trio of dense developments that could add 1,500 housing units within 1.5 miles of each other. The group, called PQ-NE Action, notes the northwest part of Rancho Pe?asquitos only has one road in and out. They are raising concerns that the road could not handle the influx in the case of an emergency, such as a wildfire evacuation. "We fully understand things are going to change, but not change to a point where the neighborhood becomes threatened from a safety standpoint," said Junaid Razvi, a 40-year resident and spokesman for the group. Two more could be on the site of the Hotel Karlan, which shut down Dec. 31. The hotel portion of the property could be rebuilt into as many as 370 homes. The Encinitas-area development company that owns it did not respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, Lennar is proposing to build more than 530 new housing units on the hotel's old golf course.PQ-NE Action is now calling on Councilman Mark Kersey to step in. "They are moving fast on this, and so we would like to see a pause," Razvi said. RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Changing market could mean opportunity for entry-level San Diego homesIn a statement, Kersey said he understands the concerns and hopes the property owners will work with the community to address them.A spokeswoman for Lennar says the company will do exactly that as part of the approval permitting process. 1661

Rep. Kevin McCarthy was elected House minority leader Wednesday, according to members of Congress in the closed-door meeting where the elections took place, meaning the California Republican will lead House GOP members after Speaker Paul Ryan leaves Capitol Hill at the end of his term in January. The vote was 159-43.With Ryan headed for the exits, McCarthy, the current No. 2 House Republican, was long viewed as the heavy favorite to become minority leader in the new Congress, the highest-ranking GOP leadership post with Republicans in the minority after losing control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterms.McCarthy faced a long-shot challenge from Rep. Jim Jordan, the co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, but the California Republican is expected to prevail in his bid to become minority leader. Ryan announced in April that he would not seek re-election and has endorsed McCarthy, the House majority leader for the past four years, to be his successor.Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party. In private conversations, Trump has pushed for Jordan and another close conservative ally -- Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina -- to have the top Republican positions on key committees, according to a source familiar. McCarthy doesn't dole out those positions-- that's for the House GOP Steering Committee -- but plenty of people on the Steering Committee are loyal to McCarthy and would heed his word. As of Wednesday afternoon it was not clear where Jordan or Meadows would land.A separate source confirmed to CNN that Jordan is interested in ranking member position on Judiciary Committee in order to check Democratic investigations that will be led by Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York. Politico first reported Wednesday that Trump has privately pushed McCarthy to make a deal with Jordan.McCarthy has also positioned himself as a close ally of Trump and a leader who can help Republicans win back control of Congress. In a letter announcing his bid for minority leader, he wrote, "We need to lay the groundwork to regain the majority so that we can continue working alongside President Trump to fulfill our promise to fundamentally change Washington. I helped build a majority from a deeper hole than this and I have what it takes to do it again."Jordan, meanwhile, has pitched himself as a leader who could help defend the President against what is expected to be aggressive Democratic-led oversight efforts."You stand up for the truth. You stand up and defend the White House and the President," Jordan told CNN in a recent interview after being asked how House Republicans can counter a Democratic majority pursuing oversight of the President and the administration.Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, a member of the Freedom Caucus, said on Tuesday that he plans to vote for Jordan and argued that House Republicans need a change over the status quo if they want to win back the majority."Unless we want to keep on losing races then we ought to consider doing something different than what we've been doing," Perry said. "I don't want to keep doing the same dumb things that we're doing and lose races."Whoever wins out as minority leader will become the most visible face of opposition to the incoming Democratic majority. The next minority leader will also have to decide whether and when the GOP minority might work to find common ground with Democrats and could also come under increased scrutiny from the President as the administration itself goes under a microscope in the new Democrat-controlled Congress. The leadership election comes as incoming freshmen, fresh off of their election wins last week, are in town for new member orientation. Dan Meuser, a member-elect from Pennsylvania, said he's spoken with both men over the weekend about their plans for the next two years, and he hasn't made a decision."I've gotten close with Kevin McCarthy. I think very highly of him. I think he's a very good conservative, showed up a lot of leadership. He certainly earned the position," Meuser told reporters on Tuesday. "On the same note, I think Jim Jordan is a smart, tough, focused individual. So I respect him as well. We'll see over the next couple of days."Next in line for the GOP leadership hierarchy in the new Congress is Rep. Steve Scalise, the current No. 3 House Republican, who is vying for the position of minority whip in the new Congress. Scalise, as majority whip, gained a higher national profile after he was injured last year in a shooting during a Republican congressional baseball practice. Scalise is not facing a challenge for the position.Rep. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is running unopposed for the position of Republican conference chair, the third-ranking position in the leadership hierarchy with Republicans in the minority. The position is currently held by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, but she is not seeking re-election to the post. This story has been updated and will continue to update with additional developments.The-CNN-Wire 5173

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A Charlotte County deputy was forced to use his firearm to defend himself from charging dogs during a call Thursday morning.According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the deputy responded to a call from a resident who was afraid to exit his truck due to three loose and aggressive pit bulls in his yard. The deputy arrived to observe the dogs, described as approximately 100 pounds each, leaving the man's yard and chasing chickens in the next yard.As the deputy was speaking to the resident, the dogs returned and began to charge the men, forcing the resident back into his truck and chasing the deputy around it.The deputy fired his weapon at two of the dogs before they retreated down the road.Animal Control arrived and took the dogs into custody, giving the injured dogs treatment. They are investigating any possible citations for the owners. 889
