BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States Thursday pledged to deepen clean energy cooperation as U.S. commerce chief led a large green power delegation to Beijing."As major energy producers and consumers, China and the United States can work together extensively in the clean energy field," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke in Beijing.The driving force behind cooperation, Li said, lies in the fact that China is actively pushing ahead with clean energy projects while the United States has green energy expertise and technology.Li encouraged the two countries to work more closely in clean energy,greenhouse gas emissions reduction, technological development to add to the momentum of sustainable development.Locke is leading a delegation of business executives from American clean energy companies eyeing China's fast growing green energy market, the size of which the United States has predicted will be 100 billion U.S. dollars by 2020."These 24 companies we brought from America represent a cross-section, a variety of different sectors," Locke said at the start of the meeting."But they still represent the best the United States has to offer in terms of clean energy, energy efficiency, electricity generation and distribution," said Locke, who earlier travelled to Hong Kong and Shanghai on the trade mission that started Monday.The diverse trade mission, the first one led by a U.S. cabinet-level official since Barack Obama assumed the presidency, includes leading energy firms like General Electric and First Solar as well as less well-known companies.Locke, on his third visit to China since he became U.S. commerce chief, characterized clean energy as "an extremely promising industry to foster areas of growth and create new jobs."He underscored the U.S.'s commitment to working closely with China in clean energy.Locke will join U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other cabinet officials for the Second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Beijing.

CHANGSHA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the debris of a landslide, bringing the death toll from rainstorms in central China's Hunan Province to 12, the Hunan flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Thursday.About 42,000 people were relocated to safe areas over the past day as the rainstorms lashed more than 280 townships in Hunan from 2 p.m. Wednesday, said a statement from the headquarters.The latest victim was a 72-year-old man who died in a rain-triggered landslide in Xupu County of Huaihua City, where four bridges collapsed and 68 roads were cut by flooding, said Zhou Shengqi, publicity officer of Xupu.  A strawberry field in Loudi, Central China's Hunan province is flooded on May 13, 2010. XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Almost 1,000 rescuers were racing the clock through the drizzle Monday to pump water and reach the 153 people trapped underground in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft. Rescuers carry pipes at the site of a flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, in north China's Shanxi Province, on March 29, 2010."Currently, more than 970 people are participating in the rescue operation," said Liu Dezheng, a spokesman of the rescue headquarters and deputy director of the General Office with the Shanxi Provincial Work Safety Committee, at a news conference late Monday."If everything goes smoothly, with the installation of two more high-power pumps, it is expected that 650 cubic meters of water can be pumped out of the shaft per hour tonight, and 2,000 cubic meters per hour tomorrow," he said.Previously, six pumps had been used to pump up to 300 cubic meters of water per hour around the clock.But Liu also pointed out that complicated conditions underground could hamper the operation."The coal mine has a high concentration of gas. Rescuers have to face the danger of toxic gas, while fighting the water," he said. "We must guard against secondary disasters."Therefore, rescuers had started to drill a hole and open a drainage channel in the shaft to divert water from the flooded tunnel to another unaffected tunnel, he said."The channel, with a length of more than 100 meters, is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Tuesday," he added.Local authorities have dispatched more than 40 medical workers and 20 ambulances to stand by at the shaft entrance.President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered local authorities to spare no effort in the rescue operation. Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang is at the site to oversee the operation.Most of those trapped were migrant workers from Shanxi, Hebei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces, rescuers said.Xu Shuwei was among the last group of workers to board a lift to escape the flood Sunday afternoon."Those trapped are my workmates, I just want to try my best to save them," said Xu, 40, who helped rescuers carry equipment throughout the night.The mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers.The mining zone was estimated to have more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including 1.04 billion tonnes of proven reserves, according to the company's official website.The mine, affiliated with the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.Earlier this month, 32 workers were killed in a similar accident when underground water flooded a mine being built in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.One worker died after being lifted to the ground and 31 others were presumed dead two weeks after the accident happened on March 1.Rescue work, which took 14 days and involved 20,384 people, was halted on March 14 when those trapped were believed to have no chance of survival.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese vaccine makers Thursday confirmed they have shut down operations after their rabies vaccines were found to be substandard.The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) announced in December that a total of 215,800 units of rabies vaccines made by Jiangsu Ealong Biotech Co. and Hebei Bioforwell Co. from July to October 2008 had quality problems.The agency had ordered the two companies to halt production and sales.The confirmation came after media reports saying Ealong Biotech had resumed production and seven executives had been detained. Reports said the company had mixed an additive with the vaccine to reduce costs, leaving as many as 1 million people affected nationwide.Some local newspapers even reported that deaths or illness were likely caused by the faulty vaccines.Yan Jiangying, the SFDA spokesman, said the SFDA was yet to release investigation results as the probe was still underway.But Yan said people needed several injections to build up immunity as the 180,000 units of vaccines made by Ealong Biotech were not as effective as required by the drug watchdog.Liu Wu, general manager of Ealong Biotech, said the faulty vaccines may not provide protection against rabies as they were not up to national standards.But Liu said "We have not received any reports on adverse reactions in people receiving rabies vaccine shots."Liu also denied there were 1 million people affected, saying each person should receive five injections, or one unit, rather than receive one injection of each unit.The company had not produced or sold even one dose of rabies vaccine since Nov. 30, Liu told Xinhua.It also halted production of the A/H1N1 flu vaccine in February when the quality permit expired, he said.Liu also denied that seven company executives had been arrested and that they had put an additive in the vaccines.Ealong Biotech is the nation's fourth-largest rabies vaccine maker with a market share of 11 percent. It took orders from the Chinese government for 6.3 million doses of A/H1N1 flu vaccines in 2009, ranking third nationwide.Wang Kejing, deputy director of the food and drug administration in Sanhe city, where Hebei Bioforwell Co. is located, said the company had not sold even one dose of vaccine since April last year.Hebei Bioforwell Co., which only produced rabies vaccines, had been shut down for rectification. It said earlier that all the faulty rabies vaccines had been used, but they had received no reports of adverse reactions.In the northern Shanxi province, almost 100 children had died or fell ill after taking shots of vaccines for encephalitis, hepatitis B and rabies, the Beijing-based China Economic Times reported on March 17.The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into the case after media exposure.
