SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman who participated in a local coronavirus vaccine trial is sharing her experience.Although it’s a blind study, she says she’s convinced she received the vaccine and she hopes her story will encourage others to get vaccinated.During the summer, American biotech company Moderna began some of its phase three trials in San Diego. Leslie Sullivan was one of those patients.“I put my name in the hat and by the end of July I was in getting my first dose,” she told 10News.The vaccine is given in two doses. “It felt like a flu shot and not much in the way of reaction after the first one,” Sullivan added.She says the second time she received the shot, she felt something. “By midnight I spiked a fever, I had chills, it was exactly like how the flu feels.”A day later, Sullivan was back to normal.Sullivan doesn’t know whether or not she got the vaccine, but says based on the symptoms she experienced, she’s almost positive she didn’t get a placebo. She says some people she’s spoken with mistakenly believe that if she got the actual vaccine, she had COVID-19.“The vaccine does not give you COVID this particular one has no live virus in it at all.”Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines use MRNA technology, which relies on messenger RNA to essentially trick the body into making antibodies to fight the virus.At some point Sullivan will find out if she did indeed get the vaccine When a vaccine is made available to the public, those who received a placebo will be notified so they can get vaccinated. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A stranger helped a woman through a flight from San Diego to Nashville in a random act of kindness caught on camera. Megan Schofield was on the Southwest plane and told 10News what she noticed. The flight had just started to take off when Schofield saw an elderly woman tightly clutching a young man’s arm. “Upon take-off, she mentioned she hadn't flown in 15 years and she was scared, and she said to the gentleman “Take my hand”, and he grabbed her hand,” Schofield said. Schofield discovered the woman was 96 years old and flying to celebrate her birthday with family across the country. “Seeing that, I told the gentleman I would want somebody to treat my grandmother the way you treated her.” Schofield posted the moment on Facebook, where it went viral. “Sometimes we're just so caught up in the hustle and bustle that we don't always see who needs help.” The man in the photo, identified only as Ben, emailed Schofield, saying he was happy such a simple moment could be so important to so many people. Schofield was inspired to pay it forward. “Yesterday on my flight home, a lady about the age of my mom… I could tell she was a little bit worried. She said “I don't fly, I drive” so I walked her to her gate and she gave me a big hug.” The elderly woman who received help from the young man is named Virginia, but we don’t know her exact identity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A stylist in Bankers Hill says a "style-and-dash" customer stiffed him on a hefty bill for hair extensions.Stylist Wesley Horn says the young woman, a repeat customer, came into Plush Salon on Friday to match her hair for extensions. The next day, for several hours, he applied and blended the hair."They looked great. She loved it. She was raving about it," said Horn.Horn says when it came time to pay the cost of more than ,000, she offered to pay through the Venmo app."She said the app wasn't working, and then she offered to pay cash," said Horn.She told Horn she had to go to the car to get the cash."Fifteen minutes go by. I text her and ask, 'Are you close?' She says, 'Yes.' Forty minutes go by, and nothing. I call her, and I'm blocked from her cellphone," said Horn.Horn filed a police report, but because she hasn't been named a suspect in a crime, 10News is not identifying the woman. Horn posted details of the incident on the Nextdoor app. The replies included several more accusations of fraud against her, ranging from dine-and-dash incidents to credit card fraud and identity theft."It's insane. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An SDG&E outage knocked out power to hundreds of South Bay customers Friday, including a money exchange operator whose backup generator may have contributed to a health crisis.According to SDG&E, about 703 customers in the areas of San Ysidro and Otay Mesa were affected by the outage that began at about 6:40 a.m. Service was supposed to be restored by 10:30 a.m., but that was pushed back to 12 p.m.Two people became ill and were taken to the hospital from a money exchange business using a power generator.According to SDG&E, a substation experienced a technical issue in which a capacitator failed. Crews had to go in a repair the substation before power could be restored. 716
