BRUSSELS, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Brussels on Thursday evening for an official visit to the European Union (EU) headquarters. The premier was welcomed at the Brussels international airport by European Commission officials, Belgian Foreign Ministry officials, officials of the Chinese mission to the EU and the Chinese embassy in Belgium, as well as Chinese students studying in Belgium. In a written statement distributed to the press upon his arrival, Wen said the world is undergoing profound changes with a volatile international situation, more regional conflicts and a spreading financial crisis. In this context, to enhance dialogue, promote consultations and deepen cooperation is in the interests of both China and the EU, and in line with the trend of the times, which is for peace, stability and development, he said. Wen said he is looking forward to having frank and in-depth exchange of views with EU leaders on China-EU relations, on how to jointly deal with the global financial crisis, and on other international and regional issues of common concern. "I hope and believe that this visit, as an important trip of confidence, will enhance the confidence of China and the EU in their future relations and in practical and mutually beneficial cooperation. I also hope and believe that this visit will enhance the confidence of the international community in the all-round strategic partnership between China and the EU," he said. During his two-day visit in Brussels, Wen is scheduled to hold talks with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. He will also meet EU foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana. Brussels is the third leg of Wen's European tour after Switzerland, where he attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and Germany. The trip will also take him to Spain and Britain.
BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's first non-governmental community foundation, the Arcadia Public Welfare Foundation, was launched at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Saturday. The foundation was established with 100 million yuan (about 14.65 million U.S. dollars) donated by Shenzhen Airtown (Eastern) Industrial Co. Ltd. and Shenzhen Arcadia Real Estate Group. "In the past, it was largely the government that took care of China's communities, but now social groups are playing a vigorous part," said Wang Jinhua, an official in charge of community construction of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Arcadia, a residential community built on landfill in Shenzhen, the city that was China's window of reform and opening-up, has received domestic and overseas habitat awards since 2005. Li Aijun, board chairman of the Shenzhen Arcadia Real Estate Group, said the foundation planned to provide financial aid for community welfare projects, such as senior citizens' housing, schools, recreation facilities and environmental protection teams. The first project will help a local hospital improve community health care and provide free exams.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks in his meeting with Seychellois President James Alix Michel. Wu said that China's economy will maintain its momentum of growth. "The crisis will not affect the contracted projects between the two sides as well as prospect of their future cooperation due to the strong growth of China's economy," Wu said. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will adopt preferential fiscal and investment policies to boost economic development and trade in border areas, said the Ministry of Finance (MOF) on Thursday. As of Nov. 1, residents who live in the border will be exempted from taxation of the daily necessities such as food and cloth costing in total no more than 8,000 yuan (1,171.3 U.S. dollars) per individual in one day. Fiscal departments at all levels of government will allocate funds to support enterprises that engage in small-amount trade in border areas as of Nov. 1. But the MOF didn't reveal how much money would be allocated. The amount of the fund is expected to increase every year, and no limitation was set on the period, said the MOF
LIMA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia Wednesday in Lima for talks on how to deepen comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and the Latin American nation. The meeting took place soon after the Chinese leader's arrival in the Peruvian capital from Havana. In a written statement issued upon his arrival here, the Chinese president said he will exchange views with Garcia and other Peruvian leaders on ways to deepen bilateral ties.
