SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego Padres player has tested positive for coronavirus as the team begins their Summer Camp workout at Petco Park.A.J. Preller announced at a news conference Friday that one player, Tommy Pham, tested positive for coronavirus. According to Preller, Pham is asymptomatic and is currently in isolation. Preller added that the team has followed contract tracing and MLB guidelines for the case. The Padres joined the rest of Major League Baseball in choosing to hold Summer Camp at their home stadiums.Teams' players, other on-field personnel, medical personnel and other essential employees, including front-office officials, were required to complete the intake screening procedures, which included a temperature check with contactless thermometer administered by a representative of the club's medical staff; a body fluid sample (saliva or oral/nasal swab) for diagnostic/PCR testing and a venous blood collection or dried blood spot sample for serology/antibody testing. Both the body fluid sample and venous blood collection or dried blood spot sample for serology/antibody testing were collected by a representative of Comprehensive Drug Testing, which conducts collections for MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and other MLB drug programs.Players and other staff who are in Tiers 1 or 2 will be tested for the coronavirus every other day. Players will receive temperature and symptom checks twice per day. Antibody testing will be conducted once per month.A covered individual who tests positive for the coronavirus will not be allowed to travel (except as authorized by club medical staff and the Joint Committee), access any team facility, or have direct contact with any other covered individual or other club staff (other than medical staff) unless and until each of the following occurs:-- the individual tests negative on two separate confirmatory tests performed by the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory taken at least 24 hours apart-- the individual has been not feverish for at least 72 hours without the use of any fever suppressant, and any respiratory symptoms have improved, as confirmed and documented by his or her treating physician or club medical staff-- the individual completes at least one antibody test following the positive diagnosis-- at the discretion of the team physician, a cardiac evaluation is conducted in accordance with published standards-- the individual's team physician, any treating physician caring for the covered individual, and the Joint Committee all conclude that the individual no longer presents a risk of infection to others and is healthy enough to return to his or her usual professional responsibilities, in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-- any local regulations or requirements are satisfiedModifications for the 2020 season intended to reduce the spread of the coronavirus include prohibiting spitting at all times in team facilities. The 2020 Major League Baseball season -- shortened to 60 games instead of the usual 162 -- is scheduled to begin on July 23, and end on Sept. 27. The postseason is scheduled to begin on Sept. 29.The Padres will play their games against teams in the National League West and American League West. With all games expected to be played without fans in attendance, the Padres are considering hosting drive-in viewing parties in the Lexus Premier lot just outside of the stadium. 3472

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Leaders of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor plan to announce Monday whether they will endorse a potential strike by grocery workers at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions in San Diego County and the rest of Southern California.Raising the threat of the first Southland grocery strike in nearly 16 years, grocery workers last week overwhelmingly authorized their union to call for a work stoppage if a contract agreement cannot be reached.``Southern California grocery workers voted in large numbers, and overwhelmingly rejected the unfair terms that have been proposed by Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons,'' said John Grant, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770.The voting was conducted Monday and Tuesday, Grant said. Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions issued a statement saying, ``The outcome of the strike authorization vote does not change anything related to this process. We remain committed to negotiating a contract that is fair to all parties, including our employees, and will continue to work to achieve that.'' Ralphs issued a similar statement and said, for now, ``it is business as usual in Ralphs stores.''The strike authorization vote means union negotiators have the power to call for a strike, if deemed necessary, but it does not automatically mean a walkout will occur. The next bargaining sessions involving the union and the companies are scheduled for July 10, 11, and 12, Grant said. The contract between the union and the companies expired in March. That pact was approved by workers in 2016 and included annual raises for most workers, along with increased pay for entry-level cashiers and concessions on holiday pay and retirement age, union officials said at the time.On Wednesday, union officials said the most recent contract offer made by the grocery companies included wage increases of less than 1 percent and nearly 25 percent cuts in cashier wages. The labor dispute raises fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. That work stoppage was estimated by some analysts to have cost the supermarket chains as much as billion, with locked-out workers losing 0 million in wages. 2202

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local meal delivery nonprofit began sales Monday for its 15th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale, which raises funds to combat hunger among residents with illnesses like cancer and HIV. During the sale, which runs through Nov. 24, residents can order pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple pies to be delivered Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Nearly 20 local bakeries and caterers are expected to bake pies for the annual fundraiser and more pie bakers are needed, according to the organization. ``Our annual bake sale is a time-honored tradition that gives community members from around the region an opportunity to give back to our neighbors in need,'' said Mama's Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes. ``Whether you're purchasing a pie, making a donation or volunteering for pie delivery, every hand up counts.'' Mama's Kitchen met its goal of 0,000 raised during last year's bake sale and aims to raise at least 0,000 during this year's six-week sale, which the organization says will fund the delivery of some 51,000 meals for residents with critical illnesses. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the organization's services that combat hunger. Volunteers with the AIDS Assistance Fund founded the organization in 1990 to support HIV and AIDS patients. Since then, Mama's Kitchen has expanded its services to more than 1,600 residents countywide who have cancer, congestive heart failure and Type II diabetes and deal with hunger. Residents can order pies for each and volunteer to deliver pies at mamaspies.org. Prospective pie bakers are advised to contact Mama's Kitchen marketing and events coordinator Silvia Dominguez at 619-233-6262, ext. 114 or silvia@mamaskitchen.org. 1751

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit have launched a digital marketing campaign that aims to fill more than 200 positions that are currently vacant in the department, the mayor announced Thursday.Downtown-based Loma Media will run the marketing campaign, which includes videos that will be shared on social media as well as a new recruitment website, with the goal of fully staffing the department by 2020, Faulconer said."Getting the San Diego Police Department back to full staffing of over 2,000 officers is a top priority," Nisleit said in a statement. In December 2017, the City Council approved an agreement to boost salaries for San Diego police officers through the 2020 fiscal year.Since the raises were announced, the number of officers lost to other law enforcement agencies is down 84 percent from last year, Faulconer said."The best way to keep San Diego one of the safest big cities in the country is by attracting the best and brightest recruits to the San Diego Police Department," Faulconer said in a statement. "We're going to be innovative and creative in how we do that."Loma was one of four companies that responded to a request for proposals issued by SDPD earlier in the year. A panel selected the firm because of its social media expertise and prior clients, which included the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command, Semper Fi Fund, UC San Diego and Google, among others. The 0,000 contract with Loma, which was approved in June, lasts two years, with an option to extend the contract for up to three more years.Funding for the first two years of the marketing contract was included in the current fiscal year budget. 1691
