CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista’s controversial Drag Queen Story Time is moving to a different branch to accommodate the number of registrants, city officials said Tuesday. The event, which was supposed to take place at the Otay Ranch library, will now be held at the Civic Center library on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. “The Chula Vista Public Library welcomes everyone, and programming at the City’s three libraries includes and reflects the diverse communities the libraries serve,” city officials said in a news release. “Hosting drag queens to read and relate with children promotes reading and literacy and sends a positive message of acceptance and tolerance.” A protest against the event was held Thursday, as opponents said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. Child care centers across the country have suffered devastating financial losses this year. As scientists continue to look at how COVID-19 affects children, a new Yale University study offers insight into how the virus spreads at day cares."The notion of telling people for several months that COVID-19 is scary, that they have to stay at home in order to avoid it, and then telling child care providers to all of a sudden go back to work without knowing anything about the risks or, even worse, without even bothering to find out what the risk was," said Dr. Walter Gilliam, a child psychiatry and psychology professor at Yale University.Dr. Gilliam helped lead the recent study, which compared transmission rates at more than 57,000 day cares throughout the United States, with transmission rates Johns Hopkins University tracked in those day cares' communities. The study focused on adults only, since they are more likely to be tested and show symptoms."What we found in the end was that child care providers were no more likely to get COVID-19 or hospitalized for COVID-19 if they were open and attending the child care program, versus if they were closed or not. And what that tells us, that at least within the context of the first three months of the pandemic and within the context of all the things that child care programs were doing to keep children safe, transmission rates weren’t primarily being driven by child care programs," said Dr. Gilliam.Dr. Gilliam says child care facilities nationwide have been following disinfecting and cleaning protocols along with strict visitor policies."It's incredible what some of these child care providers were doing. We asked 36 different types of things that they might be doing in order to try and keep children safe and three-quarters of them were doing temperature checks and screening checks every single day. About one-third of them were doing it twice or more a day," said Dr. Gilliam.Dr. Gilliam says one crucial thing the facilities did was place children into cohorts, or small groups, and not mix large groups of children together. Something the YMCA of the USA says its centers are doing and has prevented them from having any COVID-19 outbreaks."It keeps our groups really tight and close together but also if we potentially have an exposure, there’s a small group that we need to work with in order to contact trace," said Heidi Brasher, Senior Director at YMCA of the USA.The YMCA isn't surprised with the Yale University study's results, saying day cares have always been laser-focused when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness with small children."I think it's one of the best things that we’ve done is increase security protocols when it comes to cleanliness, when it comes to temperature checks, when it comes to wellness checks for our staff. It has been one of the great indicators in how we can move through this pandemic time without major outbreaks in our programs," said Brasher.Dr. Gilliam says we need to be doing all we can to financially support our local child care facilities."The bottom-line of the study is that child care programs do not seem to pose a threat to communities in terms of transmission but that does not mean that communities do not pose a threat to child care," said Dr. Gilliam.And keeping COVID-19 rates down in communities will not only help child care providers, but ensure they are able to stay open once the pandemic is over. 3440

Off J Street, Tony heard a knock and saw a casually dressed man at his door from a company called Pacific Home Remodeling. "He was looking to inspect homes for estimates of remodeling costs," said Tony, who asked us not to use his real name.Tony is a renter and told the man he wasn't interested. "I had to continually repeat, 'I'm not interested' before he finally left. He came back a second time a few days later - and the same situation," said Tony.Once again, the man was asked to leave. A week later, Tony and his cousin found a flyer stuck on their front door. It read 'NOTICE' in big block letters, and included a name and cell number, along with 'We were here for inspection and we missed you. Please call to arrange a new inspection.' The company at the bottom of the paper: Pacific Home Remodeling. A confused Tony set it aside. "I thought maybe they meant to put this notice on another house," said Tony.Then on Tuesday, the man turned up again. Tony's cousin was the only on home and heard a banging at the door. He was just inside the door, when he saw the man with his hand on the knob outside."He uses me cousin's name and my name saying we authorized him to come inspect home and look around. That wasn't true. My cousin told him to leave, and 10 minutes later, he returns and says he just got approval from me. Problem for him was I was on the phone," said Tony. Despite the notice, neither of them had given approval for an inspection. Tony later posted the incident on Nextdoor. Neighbors reported finding the same notices on their doors. One claimed a salesperson tried to talk his way into home past a confused elderly woman. A spokesperson with the company said they're looking into Tony's claims, but defended the use of the notices as "marketing material." Tony doesn't buy it. "It's deceptive. Very official looking. They put these notices on doors and hope people don't communicate with one another, and gain access to the house. It's very concerning," said Tony.Tony attempted to file a police report with Chula Vista Police, but says he was told there wasn't evidence a crime was committed.According to the Contractors State License Board, the Los-Angeles based Pacific Home Remodeling has had several citations dating back to 2015 and was put on probation. (KGTV) - A South Bay city is the latest the approve the sale of legal marijuana in San Diego County.An ordinance that will allow the sale of legal weed in Chula Vista was approved by city leaders Tuesday, after City Council twice delayed a vote on the issue.The ordinance allows for 12 commercial licenses (three in each of the city's four districts) and eight total storefronts (two per district). RELATED: Parents raise concerns over marijuana shop operating near children in Chula VistaPot shops will be required to be at least 150 feet from residential zones, 600 feet from youth centers or parks, and 1000 feet from churches, schools, or daycare centers. Business applicants must have a year of experience operating a legal marijuana business.The ordinance will also allow legal delivery services to operate in the city and for businesses that grow cannabis, though only in industrial areas of the city. Now, Chula Vista resident will be tasked with voting on a local cannabis tax. Tax dollars would pay for new changes, processes, and enforcement of marijuana in the city.If everything is approved, the measure would go into effect Jan. 1, 2019, a year after a voter-approved proposition legalized weed across California.Chula Vista leaders hope the new ordinance will help crack down on illegal pot shops operating within the city. 1421
