SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval Medical Center San Diego has been selected as one of a handful of sites to participate in a coronavirus vaccine trial.The medical center will participate in phase III trials for vaccine candidate "AZD1222" developed by AstraZeneca, according to the Department of Defense. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 50 free health classes could come to community centers and libraries across San Diego. It would be part of a sponsorship deal the city is considering with Sharp HealthCare, in which Sharp would pay the city 0,000 a year for the right to market as the city's "Health and Wellness Partner."Sharp currently offers classes, many of them free, but most are at Sharp facilities.This arrangement, going before a city committee Wednesday, and ultimately before the City Council, would call for six free classes a year in each of the nine council districts, from Otay Mesa to Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Eunice Sanchez-Mata, of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said patients usually see her once or twice a year."We're here educating them as best as we can, but really that education should be year long," she said. The classes would impart key information on ways to prevent heart disease, quit smoking, live with diabetes, and manage stress. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighborhoods near the Miramar Landfill are reporting a resurgence of awful odors they believe are coming from the landfill. "You come out the door in the morning and it just hits you," said Matty Wuest of University City. About a mile away, fellow resident Janis Deady concurs. "Like last night at in the morning," she says, "the smell woke me up out of a dead sleep." So, exactly what does it smell like? The distant neighbors are at no loss for words. "If you take the natural gas smell," said Matty, "Mix that with dog poop and vomit. That's what it smell like." Janis said she'd lived near the landfill for more than 20 years without an issue, but that changed about three years ago. "All of the sudden in the 2016 we started smelling putrid, disgusting, horrid smells."The distant neighbors say complaints in 2016 lead to hearings with the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District; resulting in fines for the City of San Diego and mitigation measures that appeared to solve the problem. But in recent weeks they say the smell is back."You shouldn't have to live like that," said Janis, "Not when we pay these taxes." A public information officer for San Diego said by phone the short story is the rain. That as soon as the Miramar Landfill has a chance to dry out from all the recent rains, the odors will dry up as well. But residents say that's not sufficient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was shot Sunday outside of a College Area smoke shop, according to police.It wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting, but San Diego Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man had been shot just before 5:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of El Cajon Blvd., outside of Aztec Smoke & Vape Shop.The victim was hit in the leg and chest and taken to a nearby hospital, but their condition was not clear.The area was closed by police for the investigation.10News is monitoring this breaking news. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Padres outfielder Tommy Pham is recovering after being stabbed in the back Sunday night, the team says.According to San Diego Police, Pham was stabbed during an altercation Sunday night.The Padres said Monday that Pham is in “good condition.” He is expected to make a full recovery.“We are aware of the incident last night involving Tommy Pham. He was treated at UC San Diego Health and is currently in good condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. The San Diego Police Department is actively investigating the incident and we will have no further comment at this time,” the Padres said.Pham Monday also thanked the medical staff in charge of his care.“I’d like to thank the incredible medical staff at UC San Diego Health for taking such great care of me last night.
