Northwestern University in the Chicago suburb of Evanston was under a lockdown order for nearly an hour after reports came in Wednesday afternoon of a person on campus with a gun and shots fired. It turns out that the whole incident was a hoax. According to ABC News, an Evanston Police official said that the report was a swatting incident. The emergency call to police claiming there was a gunman on Northwestern's campus came from out of state.  Swatting pranks have been taking place in recent years involving a call to police prompting a SWAT unit to respond to a person's home. The prank sometimes end up being deadly. In December, a 28-year-old Kansas man was shot and killed by police after a prankster claimed the man was holding his family hostage after shooting his father. When police arrived, the man reached for a waistband, causing police to kill the man. It turns out he was unarmed, and the call came from 1,400 miles away. Northwestern University originally reported that a person with a gun was located near Engelhart Hall. Evanston Police said that several streets nearby were closed. After an initial search, Evanston Police said they could not find any victims, gunmen or crime scene. Students and employees were being told to seek shelter around 2:40 p.m. local time. An hour after the initial lockdown order, Northwestern said that only those in Englehart Hall remained in shelter. An all clear was given shortly after 4 p.m. local time.  1540

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police say a 29-year-old South Florida man shot his mother following an argument over orange juice, an air conditioner remote and the use of her car. Luis Pages told police he “he lost it” during the Sunday evening argument and shot 59-year-old Miriam Gonzalez multiple times in their North Miami Beach home. He's charged with one count of second-degree murder and is being held without bond. Pages told investigators he tried to shoot himself too, but was out of bullets. He then called 911. When an officer arrived Pages told him, “take me to jail." 590

Netflix has apologized for images it used to promote an upcoming film on their streaming service after getting backlash online, and a petition to remove the film got almost 190,000 signatures.The movie, called “Cuties” in the U.S., follows an 11-year-old girl who joins a dance group. The film, directed by Ma?mouna Doucouré and originally called “Mignonnes”, won a directing award at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.The petition on Change.org points out the marketing imagery and language Netflix used to promote the film, and calls it “disgusting” because it “sexualizes an eleven year old for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles.”The main image Netflix originally used shows the four lead actresses, all girls, wearing black and turquoise dance outfits revealing their stomachs and most of their legs, while posed mid-dance.The film is recommended for 16+, according to Netflix.https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1296486375211053057“We're deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has told top brass at the city's police department to stop arresting people who are caught smoking marijuana in public, according to a City Hall aide.Currently, smoking in public can lead to arrest, while possession of small amounts of marijuana can lead to a summons.This weekend, the mayor told the NYPD to issue summonses for smoking pot in public, instead of making arrests.The NYPD has already begun a working group to evaluate its marijuana enforcement procedures and present its recommendations within 30 days, at the mayor's request.
