American Airlines has sent out letters to roughly 25,000 employees about possible layoffs and furloughs. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters, as they are called, are required by law 60 days before layoffs or furloughs are anticipated. The letters from the airline specifically say they are taking this step because of “overages we may start to see Oct. 1 when our Payroll Support Program funding expires.”They reference customer revenues being down 80 percent in June 2020 compared to June 2019. The company says they have 20,000 more employees on payroll than they “will need to operate our smaller schedule this fall.”American says they hope to lessen the number of furloughs by offering employees opportunities like extended leave and early retirement. "We know American will be smaller going forward and we must right-size all aspects of our airline to adjust to that new reality," the letter said. United Airlines sent nearly 36,000 similar letters to employees earlier this month. At the time, United said the notices covered about 45 percent of their U.S employees.Delta Airlines, who has not signaled any furloughs or layoffs at this time, did report low second-quarter earnings earlier this week. Delta is the first U.S. airline to report financial results for the
According to a database kept by Johns Hopkins, at least 3 million people in the United States are confirmed to have contracted the novel coronavirus since the pandemic reached the country earlier this year. The U.S. surpassed the grim milestone on Wednesday morning. According to the database, more than 131,000 Americans have died of the virus. The U.S. passed the milestone as cases of COVID-19 continue to spike across the country, particularly in southern states. Late June and early July have seen some of the highest daily totals of newly confirmed COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began. Arizona, California, Florida and Texas have seen massive spikes in recent weeks before dropping in recent days — likely due to lack of reporting over the Fourth of July holiday.Hospitalizations linked to the virus across the county have risen slightly in recent weeks and have spiked in states where the virus appears to be spreading quickly.Several states have either paused or rolled back steps to reopen businesses following lockdown-related restrictions in response to rising case numbers. A number of states and cities have also introduced ordinances requiring masks in public places. The U.S. also continues to be among the world leaders in cases per 100,000 people. Only Chile and Peru rank higher, according to Johns Hopkins. U.S. cases account for more than a quarter of all worldwide cases. Around the world, nearly 12 million people have contracted the virus and about 540,000 have died. The U.S.'s total number of cases is almost double that of Brazil — the country with the second-most confirmed cases of the virus. 1634

After weeks of wrangling, the MLB Players’ Association told MLB that players will be ready to report on July 1 for a second Spring Training.Teams will conduct a 60-game season in home ballparks, MLB said on Tuesday. Most teams will conduct their preseason training in their home cities instead of utilizing Spring Training facilities. The length of the season has been greatly reduced from 162 games after MLB suspended the season in March. The regular season is expected to begin on July 23 or 24. Teams will play the majority of their games versus in-division opponents, with the remaining games being played against interleague teams from the same geographic division. "Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said. "We have provided the Players Association with a schedule to play 60 games and are excited to provide our great fans with Baseball again soon.”The two sides have struggled to reach an agreement in recent weeks as the two sides disagreed on the number of games to be played, and a salary structure. Players and owners previously agreed to a framework in March when the season was suspended stipulating players would get a full prorated salary if games would be held in front of fans. 1285
