Police are warning about a terrifying phone scam where the person on the other end of the phone says they are holding a family member for ransom.One woman said she received one of these calls and it was the most frightening call she ever received.Natalie Bruser was heading home from work when her cellphone rang from a number she did not recognize."I answered, and it sounded like one of my kids crying, and I couldn't figure out who it was," said Bruser, who has three children. "They were crying super hard, and so I was hysterical."The sobbing young woman said she had been kidnapped. Bruser thought it sounded most like her daughter Nicole, who is in her 20s."It seems that a black Suburban pulled up, and people got out with guns," she said. "And Nicole started screaming."A man then got on the phone and said if Bruser wanted to see her daughter again, she needed to drive over at a gas station off Interstate 75 in Springboro, and get money from an ATM.The man said police were on their tail, and then he told Bruser to stay on the phone and not call 9-1-1. The man also said Bruser needed to act quickly or they would harm her daughter, who appeared to be still crying in the background."She was crying heavily," Bruser said. "And I said, 'Nicole, please calm down. I need to hear your voice. I need to really hear that you're OK.'"But it was all a scam.Luckily, Bruser was able to yell for help, and someone nearby called the police. Officers quickly sorted the situation out.It turned out that there was no black SUV with armed men inside, there was no police car in pursuit, and as for Bruser's daughter Nicole, she was home resting."I'm freaking out at this point. I don't know if they have her hostage or not," Bruser said. "So Springboro police actually went and banged on her door, and she was sleeping, and so here she was safe at home."How the scam worksIt's called the "virtual kidnapping scam."According to police, the caller is not local and does not even know your son or daughter's name. But panicked parents will grab hundreds of dollars, then run to the nearest Western Union desk to wire money for the release of their child.Reports from around the country say this is a very effective scam. The scammers usually tell their victims to stay on the phone and not let anyone know what is going on or they will harm their child.As for the black Chevy Suburban filled with kidnappers carrying guns, the scammers have seen action movies where this is a common trope.In a moment of panic however, it's easy to miss all the holes in the caller's story.So be suspicious of any strange phone calls that appear to be from a family member in distress. PENSACOLA, Fla. — Rivers swollen by Hurricane Sally's rains could mean more problems for parts of south Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Sally has diminished to a tropical depression. But it's still a rainmaker as it has moved Thursday into Georgia, on a path to the Carolinas. At least one person was killed on Wednesday in Alabama and one other person was reported missing. Hundreds of people were rescued on Wednesday by first responders. The storm flipped boats and cars and even caused significant damage to a bridge outside of Pensacola, Florida.Authorities warned that rain from the storm could swell eight waterways in Florida and Alabama to record levels. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned residents and visitors of possible river flooding in the coming days. The National Weather Service says the small city of Brewton, Alabama, can expect moderate to major flooding. 886

PALA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Temecula woman who stopped to help victims of a deadly bus crash in Pala Mesa on the I-15 freeway is hoping to connect with the family of the woman she comforted until she passed. Jacqueline Hernandez says she never thought twice about stopping to help the victims of the bus crash. She says it was pouring rain, but when she noticed what happened, she pulled over to ask how she could help. Hernandez says she joined other Good Samaritans that had pulled over to help. She says, she arrived just moments after the crash. The charter bus traveling from El Monte to Tijuana on the southbound 15 when it crashed. Three women were killed, 18 people were sent to local hospitals. Hernandez tells 10News she noticed a woman ejected from the bus and says two men started alternating CPR. She says she tried to keep the woman alert, speaking to her in Spanish and holding her face. Eventually paramedics told Hernandez the woman no longer had a pulse. While Hernandez tried to help the woman, her two children passed out blankets to the other victims that were injured.Hernandez wants the woman's family to know their loved one was not alone in her final moments. The California Highway Patrol is now helping Hernandez arrange a meeting with the woman's family. Hernandez is hoping to help them financially with funeral costs. The three victims were identified as ,23-year-old Cinthya Karely Rodriguez Banda, Maria De La Luz Diaz, 67 of Riverside, and Julia Perez Cornejo, 73. 1508

OWEGO, N.Y. — A New York police officer is being hailed a hero after he saved the life of a man trapped for 10 hours in a car with no heat that was buried in snow.According to New York State Police, 58-year-old Kevin Kresen was driving during Wednesday's snowstorm when he ran his car off the road. A short time later, Kresen became trapped when a snowplow covered his car with four feet of snow. 404

Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, released surveillance footage Thursday from an Aug. 2 attempted carjacking in Bethesda in hopes it will lead to the arrest of the two suspects.Police said at about 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 2, a man was returning to his car parked in the garage of the Westfield Montgomery Mall when two male suspects approached him. They demanded his car key while implying one of the men was armed.The victim complied, but when the suspects got into the car and started it, they realized the car had a manual transmission which neither could drive.The suspects then fled on foot, last seen leaving the second level of the parking garage, as seen in the footage below.Anyone with information about these suspects or the carjacking can call Montgomery County Police at 240-773-5100 or the Crime Solvers tip line at 1-866-411-8477.
