SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After all these years, people still love coming to the San Diego Zoo to see the California condors.At one point in the 1980's, there were only 22 of them living outside captivity. The zoo began a major effort to save the species, getting them to reproduce and then releasing them across the state. It's worked. There are now more than 250 flying across the American West and Mexico.RELATED: How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest City"It's really good for us, actually, because they help to reduce all the bad things that cause our sicknesses and ill health. So it's pretty cool," says Maggie Stack, a San Diego State graduate student. Stack is part of a new SDSU team working with the San Diego Zoo to save the bird.As much success as the zoo has had with the condor program, new research shows that the condors in the wild are still under threat."The condors are still critically endangered, so there's still a long way for them to go until we can have a really self-sustaining population," Stack said.RELATED: New giraffe calf joins in the herd at San Diego Zoo exhibitA big reason for that is that the same pollutants that nearly killed the condor off so many years ago are still hurting them today. Stack's team is doing research suggesting that the condors are still dealing with lead poisoning and the chemical DDT, which was banned nearly 40 years ago."Those can cause egg shell thinning in condors," Stack added. "So we're seeing a significant amount of egg shell thinning in condors that live on the coast."A thinner shell means a greater chance of the egg being crushed, often accidentally by the parent condors trying to keep the egg safe.The researchers hope their work at SDSU can help solve the problem. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was sexually assaulted by the driver of a vehicle she confused for the ride she had requested in Hillcrest, San Diego Police said Friday.The woman left a business on University Ave. Wednesday night about 11 p.m. and entered the vehicle waiting in the roadway, according to investigators.A short time later, the male driver sexually assaulted the woman.Detectives say the woman was released and police were called.The victim described the attacker as a Hispanic man, about 40 years old, with a receding hair line and a mustache. San Diego Police released a composite sketch of the man. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An apparent SDG&E scam reported by a North County couple turned out to be an actual warning to evacuate, just not for them.The power company is calling a recent interaction with a Poway family a "misunderstanding," after the family believed they had been scammed by someone posing as the company.The Chavez family told 10News this week they received a phone call from someone saying they worked for SDG&E, telling them they needed to evacuate their home while work was being using a helicopter.The message said, “it requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”ORIGINAL STORY: Family urging San Diegans to be aware of a possible new SDG&E scamAfter calling SDG&E to confirm, they were told there was no work going on in their area. The family believed they had been scammed. But it turns out, the phone call was true — for a different neighborhood.According to SDG&E, FAA does require residents to leave their homes when work is being done in their area requiring a helicopter and special construction.However, when the Chavez family called SDG&E, they didn't use the number the original caller provided. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman said a scammer used the military to trick her into paying for a phony apartment rental."We were looking to move during this tough time, which is kind of already more stressful than it normally would be,” said Maci, who declined to use her last name.She searched various websites and thought she found a good deal on Craigslist for a place downtown on Market Street. Through email, the supposed owner said his name was Matthew Sherman, a sergeant stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain. He said he was looking for a long-term renter and sent Maci a link with photos and an Airbnb site that looked legitimate."Along with the presence of the military, presence of the Airbnb website, I felt safe in the process,” Maci said.She exchanged emails and text messages to get more information about the apartment. She wired ,600.“There was this sense of pressure because I was so worried that this great deal was going to disappear,” Maci said.It turns out that the listing was fake. Maci said the profile photo used by the man pretending to be Sgt. Sherman was a real soldier who passed away in an accident in 2018. “It really just sad heavy on my heart because this person's family doesn't realize his photo's being used for criminal activity,” Maci said.When Team 10 contacted “Matthew Sherman,” the response via email was similar to what Maci received. When questioned if the listing was legitimate, he stopped responding.It was an expensive lesson for Maci, but one she wants to share so others do not fall for it.
