SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Legion Major League Rugby team announced Tuesday that it released recently signed player Steffon Armitage in the wake of his conviction for sexually assaulting a woman in France. On Monday, a French court found Armitage guilty of groping a woman's breasts outside a bar last year in the town of Pau, where he was playing at the time of the assault. Armitage, 34, admitted he had also been drinking heavily that night. The court handed Armitage a suspended prison sentence and ordered him to compensate the victim with 5,000 euros, roughly ,500 in U.S. dollars. The Legion signed Armitage in July. Earlier in the decade, Armitage won three European Rugby Champions Cup titles with France's FC Toulannais and was named the European Rugby Cup's 2013-2014 player of the year.He had been expected to join the team at the beginning of pre-season training in December."Armitage's conduct does not reflect the values of the Legion and therefore, the team is going to go in a different direction for the 2020 season," the team said in a statement released Tuesday. The Legion launched with Major League Rugby in 2018 as one of the league's seven founding teams. The organization plays all home games at University of San Diego's Torero Stadium. 1273

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The FBI reached out to the public Wednesday for help in tracking down a man who faces federal charges for allegedly operating San Diego-based pornographic websites that recruited young women and at least one teenage girl to engage in commercial sex acts by force, fraud and coercion. The federal agency has posted a reward of up to ,000 for information leading to the arrest of 37-year-old Michael James Pratt, who co-owned and ran online sites called "Girls Do Porn" and "Girls Do Toys."An indictment unsealed last fall alleges that Pratt also produced pornographic content involving a 16-year-old girl.Pratt and his co-defendants allegedly videotaped sex acts under the guise of distributing the footage only to private clients, then disseminated the clips online without the victims' knowledge or consent. In January, a judge awarded about million to nearly two dozen women who sued the owners and operators of GirlsDoPorn.com. The plaintiffs -- identified in court documents as Jane Does 1 through 22 -- were awarded just under .5 million in compensatory damages and .3 million in punitive damages.Superior Court Judge Kevin Enright ruled that the defendants falsely claimed that the videos would never appear on the internet and were instead solely filmed for DVDs to be sold to customers living outside the United States. Those lies were often bolstered by "reference women" who posed as models and provided "new recruits with false comfort that the experience (was) safe and enjoyable, and that (previously recorded) videos have never appeared online or been discovered by anyone in the models' lives," according to the judge's 187-page ruling. Also charged and awaiting trial in the case are company co-owner Matthew Isaac Wolfe; porn actor Ruben Andre Garcia; administrative assistant Valorie Moser; and Amberlyn Dee Nored, who is accused of lying to victims about how the pornography they were performing in would be distributed.Anyone who may have information on the whereabouts of Pratt is asked to contact the FBI at 858-320-1800 or contact the agency online at tips.fbi.gov. 2121

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Blood Bank reached out to the public Tuesday asking for blood donations amid the coronavirus pandemic. The fast-spreading respiratory illness has resulted in school closures and work-from-home policies throughout San Diego County, forcing the bank to cancel blood drives. The San Diego Blood Bank collects more than half of its blood supply on bloodmobiles stationed at these blood drives, according to the company.RELATED: Red Cross pleads for blood donations amid severe shortage due to COVID-19 cancellations"The U.S. is on the verge of a serious blood shortage that will lead to blood rationing and triage," said David Wellis, CEO of San Diego Blood Bank. "We need healthy people to come out to donate immediately. Supplies are dropping to critical levels."Individuals are not at risk of contracting the coronavirus from donating blood, and the virus poses no known risk to patients receiving transfusions, officials said."It's safe to donate blood," said Admiral Brett Giroir, Assistant Secretary of Health. "Part of preparedness includes a robust blood supply."RELATED: San Diego to legally enforce new public health orders over coronavirusAs a safety precaution, San Diego Blood Bank is currently deferring people who have traveled to areas with World Health Organization level 3 travel notices (China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, France and Spain, among others) for 28 days from their date of departure from the outbreak area. If donors have been exposed to or treated for coronavirus, they are also deferred for 28 days. People experiencing coronavirus symptoms, including fever, cough and shortness of breath, should not attempt to donate."It's important to note that blood collection activities are not `mass gatherings,' rather they are controlled blood drives conducted using appropriate infection control mechanisms intended to assure the safety of the products, donors and staff," said Doug Morton, COO of San Diego Blood Bank. "San Diego Blood Bank is highly regulated and is following best practices, such as properly cleaning surfaces between donation."The blood bank encourages all healthy individuals to donate blood. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego is among four cities named Wednesday to join the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge.Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Natural Resources Defense Council President Rhea Suh said Los Angeles, San Jose and Portland, Oregon, were also selected for the million effort by Bloomberg's American Cities Initiative to support and enhance a total of 20 cities' capacities to fight the effects of climate change and create environmentally sustainable solutions.Bloomberg announced last month that Seattle, Washington, and Atlanta, Georgia, were selected for the program.RELATED: California sets goal to generate 100 percent clean energy by 2045"The response to our Climate Challenge was overwhelming," Bloomberg said. "Cities all across the country put forward thoughtful and innovative proposals. Selecting the ones with the most ambitious goals -- and the most realistic plans for reaching them -- was not easy. But Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and Portland all stood out, and we're glad to include them in the group of winners."The American Cities Initiative is a 0 million investment intended to support policies that Bloomberg sees as critical. The cities participating in the climate challenge program will receive a suite of funds and materials to assist in the fulfillment of their individual climate action plans.
