Immunotherapy has gained ground against a stubborn opponent: ovarian cancer. A personalized cancer vaccine is safe and may lengthen the lives of ovarian cancer patients, a small clinical trial found. The research, published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, showed "significantly higher" overall survival at two years among patients who received the vaccine, compared with patients who did not.Ovarian cancer is a "silent killer" because often it goes unnoticed until it is diagnosed at a late stage. Treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy, most patients -- 85% -- relapse and ultimately develop resistance to the chemo. At this point, they run out of treatment options.Still, scientists are hopeful based on the fact that a subset of patients shows an immune response to their cancer. Generally, these patients have better survival rates than those whose immune systems don't react in the same way.A vaccine, then, might be able to trigger and boost the immune system and increase the survival rates of patients, said Dr. Lana Kandalaft, senior author of the new study and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.  1210

If you’re among the 40 million people online looking for love, you know it can be tough finding the perfect match. It might be your fault, but one little change could send you down the aisle. The problem? You may be dating out of your league. A new study found that users who messaged people out of their league typically waited a lot longer to get a reply back or even get a reply at all. "A lot of people try to date out of their league, and they use that terminology," says Chief love officer Michelle Frankel, with New York City Matchmaking. "But it may not result in the end relationship they are looking for; but it might not even be what they perceive it to be."  According to Urban Dictionary, dating out of your league simply means you’ve got no shot. However, Frankel says that’s not true all the time. For example, look at Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel, back in the 1980's.Frankel says dating up like Billy Joel did can work, but it can’t be based on looks alone. “Look what he brought to the table," explains Frankel. "Clearly he was financially set at the time and also he had so much unique talent."  If you date out of your league simply to find someone better looking than you, Frankel says good luck finding a match. "That's not a recipe for a lasting relationship in and of itself. There has to be more compatibility, shared values, same interests and both going in the same direction." Whether you are dating online or in person, Frankel says to stop trying to find your Disney movie moment. "You are never going to find perfection; it doesn't exist," Frankel says.   1707

In a sea of graduation caps, how do you stand out? Increasingly, students are decorating their caps to showcase some part of their life.UNLV professor and folklorist Sheila Bock began studying trends behind graduation caps after she first arrived in Las Vegas in 2011. She began formally researching in 2015, taking photos from around the country and interviewing students on their graduation cap design choices."So one category is one of celebration and optimism and looking into the future, 'I did this', 'the best is yet to come', which isn't that surprising because that's kinda the whole point of the graduation ceremony," Bock said. Some examples include "Today is a perfect day to start living your dreams" or "Adventure is out there." While Bock said many celebrate "education as this stepping stone towards people's own individualized version of pursuing the American Dream," she also found a lot of examples of people pushing back against that story, rather by "Game of Loans" referencing college loan debt or highlighting the less positive aspects of their college experience. "Family relationships, whether they have kids, whether they have been dealing with a brain tumor, this is a space where students or graduates are really trying to highlight 'I did this' and here are the struggles I had to go through in order to get to this moment," Bock said, also noting that some students use the caps as a memorial to family and friends they've lost. But one thing she has noticed in the past few years is the caps have started to take more of a lean toward the political. Bock noted that there has been a long tradition of political themes, dating back to the 1960s and caps decorated with peace signs in reference to the Vietnam War. "It's not to say people weren't doing it before but I'm seeing it happen as a more widespread practice. People are asserting overtly political messages, like Black Lives Matter," she said. "Or making references to language from the political landscape, 'nevertheless she persisted.' Or calling attention to specific identities that have recently become very politicized, immigrant identities."Hashtags on social media, such as #Immigrad and #Latinxgrad, also inspire others of similar identities to create their own caps, Bock said."They want to use this space of the graduation ceremony, this space of celebration, this space to recognize accomplishment, to make themselves visible," she said. "To make these marginalized identities visible and say I'm in this space, I belong in this space and I want to make myself known."But what about students who decide not to decorate their caps? "The main reason is that people feel this sense of formality to the ceremony that they would like to keep intact," Bock said. "Oftentimes, it's not necessarily that they see other people decorating their cap that they're doing something wrong. They're saying I don't have something to say badly enough to put it on a cap and kind of disrupt the formality of the occasion."The majority of the caps Bock and her student assistants have documented so far are from UNLV, along with some from Ohio State University, where Bock received her graduate degrees. Bock approached the university's Center for Folklore Studies to create a digital archive of her materials.Officially titled “Decorated Mortarboards: Forms and Meanings,” the project invites participation through surveys, interviews, and social media posts with #gradcaptraditions.Bock emphasized any graduate, no matter when or where they graduated, is welcome to share their caps. I cannot bring myself to include a link, because why give it more air? But that op-ed belittling Jill Biden, urging her to drop the Dr., mocking her research on community college, likening her degree to an honorary doctorate, is disgusting. 1/2— Melissa Korn (@melissakorn) December 13, 2020 305
