CANTON, S.D. – No matter where you live in the United States, debt can play a big role in your life. Sarah Woods of Canton, South Dakota, has battled debt nearly her entire life, almost two decades. “Debt seems like almost a constant way of life,” said Woods.But life, some might argue, wasn't fair to Woods.“Within three months I got married, found out I had cancer and also had our first child,” said Woods. “So, you take three of the biggest things that could possibly happen in our life and roll them into your early 20s, I mean you’re going to start out on the wrong foot and since then it’s just been one struggle after another.”Woods and her husband now have three boys and taking care of them isn’t cheap. Woods says some months their pantry's been bare.“To actually have to reach out and say no, we are personally struggling is a hard one,” said Woods.Lori Pudenz helps with the food pantry that's run out of the Canton Lutheran Church, where Woods works. Pudenz says the pantry’s been a huge blessing.“My opinion is nobody should go hungry and that’s what we’re here for,” said Pudenz.Woods' husband is a machinist and she works full-time at the church, but it still hasn't been enough to overcome a mountain of debt that began with cancer at 19 years old.“I couldn’t imagine having an extra in my bank account that wasn’t due to someone else.”Not all of Woods’ debt has come from being a victim of circumstances. She admittedly says she has made some very bad decisions. But what has changed her life is a class on debt taught at the church where she works.“I can see light at the end of the tunnel,” said Woods. “We’re definitely getting there. I’ve been able to learn a lot of different life skills and really face my debts.”And after a full day at work at the church, Woods goes to work at home. She has created a plus size boutique called Becky’s Closet. “The last few months have been tremendous for business. It has created Christmas for us.” 1975

Baltimore did not take President Donald Trump's recent attack of the city lying down. Instead, Charm City was quick to stand up and fight back.Trump lashed out at another prominent African American lawmaker on Saturday, tweeting that his Baltimore district is a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess."The President's tirade was directed at House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, who represents Maryland's 7th Congressional District in the House and recently lambasted conditions at the border. Trump's attack against Cummings was the latest verbal assault against a minority member of Congress who is a frequent critic of the President.The President suggested that conditions in Cummings' district, which is majority black and includes parts of Baltimore, are "FAR WORSE and more dangerous" than those at the US-Mexico border and called it a "very dangerous & filthy place."Cummings, the city's leaders and residents were quick to defend Baltimore. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Louisiana Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards will narrowly win reelection, beating out Republican challenger Eddie Rispone, CNN projected Saturday night.Edwards will claim victory in a deep red state President Donald Trump won by 20 percentage points in 2016, and against a businessman who closely aligned himself with the President. Trump held two rallies in Louisiana over the past 10 days, but the attempt at a last-minute boost was not enough to carry Rispone over the finish line.Last month, Edwards was forced into a runoff election after falling short of the majority vote needed to clinch reelection. He was the top vote getter (47%) in the jungle primary in which all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, ran against each other. Rispone got 27% of the vote, Republican Ralph Abraham got 24%, and Republican Patrick Landry got 1%.Edwards, 53, is the only statewide elected Democrat in Louisiana. He has accomplished the national Democratic priority of expanding Medicaid, but has been far to the right of his party on some social issues -- including abortion rights and gun control. He is a former Army Ranger who describes himself as pro-guns and a pro-life Democrat. Earlier this year, Edwards signed a bill banning abortions once a heartbeat is detectable with no exceptions for rape or incest.He was the minority leader of the Louisiana House of Representatives before being elected governor in 2015. As governor, Edwards signed an executive order to expand Medicaid in the state, and supports a modest increase to Louisiana's minimum wage, according to his campaign website. He has campaigned on banning sanctuary cities and cracking down on illegal immigration, and is a vocal critic of the ongoing impeachment inquiry.Edwards won office back in 2015 on somewhat of a fluke. Polling showed him only clearly beating one Republican in a runoff, scandal-ridden David Vitter, and Vitter was the Republican who managed to secure a runoff spot alongside Edwards.
