SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Erica Norman spent months saving thousands for a cruise down the Mexican Riviera on the massive Norwegian Bliss. Norman and about 4,000 others boarded that ship this week and were whisked away from the Port of Los Angeles. They were excited for a trip down to Cabo and Mazatlan - but instead, they wound up in San Francisco."I paid ,000 for this cruise and it's just a tour going in a circle in California," said Norman, who lives in Orange County. "I'm not happy about that."Norman said that about two hours into the cruise, the passengers got an announcement that the ship would divert to San Francisco, San Diego, and make one stop in Ensenada before heading back to Los Angeles. The ship made the call to avoid Hurricane Willa down south. RELATED: Tropical storms force Norwegian Bliss cruise ship to divert to San Diego"The safety and security of our guests and crew is always our top priority," Norwegian cruises said in a statement. "Guests were notified of the change as soon as our operations team was able to confirm the modified itinerary."But Norman said many of the guests felt blindsided. "I think they knew ahead of time, and then once they got us out in the water then they decided to change the itinerary because no one could get off at that time," Norman said. The Bliss reached San Diego Wednesday morning. At 1,094 feet long and a capacity of 4,004 passengers, it's the largest to ever dock in San Diego, a city that usually gets older ships on less traveled routes. RELATED: Cruise industry booming as season begins in San Diego"The guests will visit all the attractions, go on tours, go to restaurants, go shopping," said Adam Deaton, who directs cruise business for the Port of San Diego. About two dozen taxicabs waited for the passengers as they disembarked on Harbor Drive. Bikes that normally would have baked in the sun were rented. And pedicab drivers said they were finding new passengers. A food mart across from the ship had a line about 10 deep. "I'd rather be safe than sorry to even get in the area of Willa," said Lillie West, a passenger who said she was glad the ship diverted.West had never been to San Diego and said she had 0 to spend locally. The Port says most cruise ships have a 0,000 impact to the local economy in their stops in San Diego, although the Bliss is so big it could be up to million. But not everyone planned to spend their dollars in San Diego, Norman included."I work 45 minutes from here, and I'm just trying to find something to do to make the best of it," she said. For Norman, that was to go back onto the Bliss, the ultramodern ship where many of the amenities are prepaid. 2761

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego. For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "I love the contrast between the gold and the red and the gray and sometimes blue."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street artHorticulture experts say the colors are more pronounced in tropical climates, but here in San Diego, you can still see a rainbow on the trees."As it ages, the stuff that doesn't look as colorful, has been oxidized somewhat, it peels off," says Bradley Brown, a Master Arborist with Tree Life Consulting. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. There's no official count for how many exist in the city.Still, right now, they're easy to spot.RELATED: Mission Hills home transformed into whimsical topiary garden"It's amazing watching all the bark peel off and seeing the rainbow come alive in them," says Jason Sandoval, who owns a gas station that has several of the trees nearby.Eucalyptus trees have a rough reputation across San Diego. They grow fast and have a tendency to fall over in high wind and rain events. But Brown says they can be safe if they're well maintained. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. It's those Dr. Seuss forms along the freeway that's something we should embrace." 1829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday he's worried about family gatherings around California ahead of the Fourth of July weekend and will announce new measures to dial back reopenings on Wednesday.Newsom said the prospect of family gatherings, not just bars or demonstrations, this weekend has health officers worried about the continued spread of the coronavirus. He added that new measures related to enforcement will also be announced on Wednesday."Tomorrow we will be making some additional announcements on efforts to use that dimmer switch we've referred to and begin to toggle back on our stay-at-home order and tighten things up," Newsom said. "The framework for us is this: If you're not going to stay home and you're not going to wear masks in public we have to enforce — and we will, and we will be making announcements on enforcement tomorrow — but we also have to recognize that the spread when you're not at home, in indoor facilities, is much more probable than in outdoor settings."RELATED: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food ahead of July 4 to slow COVID-19 spreadNew York adds California, 7 other states to traveler quarantine listLast weekend, Newsom ordered bars in Los Angeles County and six other counties to close — a move which San Diego County followed to a degree on Monday. There are 19 counties currently on the state's watch list. The governor says four more counties will likely be added to that watch list in the next day.An additional 6,367 COVID-19 cases were reported across the state in the last day, according to the state. 1596
