ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A 19-year-old’s call for help on social media after experiencing homelessness ended with an overwhelming amount of support from the community.Caleb Dershem recently moved to Escondido from Ohio in March.“I wanted to get more experience, try new things,” he said.He had a job driving for DoorDash and a roof over his head, but after some struggles, he ended up without a home in June, sleeping in his car.The car that became his shelter was stolen last week. In need of a place to rest his head, Dershem took to Facebook to post in the Escondido Friends group.“My car I have been sleeping in has been stolen, and I need a place to stay for the night while I wait till morning for the shelter resources to open. If anyone knows any safe places, let me know, please. I’m 19 and from Ohio,” he wrote.Moments later, dozens of North County residents reached out to Dershem offering advice."It's overwhelming to find out how many good people are actually out there," he said. "All I asked for was a place to stay for the night."There was one stranger, a man named Mike Shaw, who would answer Dershem’s call for help.“Our goal is to get some information from him, find out where he is, find out briefly what’s going on,” said Shaw. “And we put him in a hotel.”But the help didn’t end there. Shaw is the Executive Director of Southern California Youth Emergency Services, or SoCalYes.The nonprofit provides help for youth in situations like Dershem’s.“We focus on street outreach and education, focusing on youth that are 12 to 24 years old on the streets homeless,” he explained.Less than a week later, Shaw helped Dershem secure a one-bedroom apartment, next they’re working on full-time employment and replacing his stolen car.“Get him stable, get him some counseling, get him a vehicle and get him employed,” said Shaw speaking of the next steps. “Make him a productive member of our society and our community.”Dershem said he's ready to get back on track.“Mike’s been great to me, helping me with a plan to get myself together, and I appreciate him a lot,” said Dershem.It was an act of kindness that possibly changed Dershem’s life. ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws.The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers. So back then, we could get traveling nurses, we could get registry nurses, we could hire more nurses locally," Van Gorder said. "Today, this is a national situation and we cannot recruit travelers, we cannot recruit registry nurses, and unfortunately, a number of our healthcare providers are also getting sick."Van Gorder said the county has 24 staffed ICU beds left, out of about 670 available. He added that as hospitals get full and resources are strained, the type of care for anyone needing hospital care will change to crisis care.The top two floors of the Escondido hospital have been set up to serve as an FMS site. The site includes 202 beds that can be used for patients that don't require ICU care. The site could take in patients from other county hospitals that become overwhelmed, Dr. Omar Khawaja, the Chief Medical Officer for Palomar Health, told ABC 10News a few weeks ago."It could be beds that we would offload some of the less sick patients from other systems into there so they can handle the sicker patients; we don’t have a solid plan for it yet," he said.California's cumulative ICU bed capacity hit 1.1% on Wednesday, with the Southern California region at 0%. Three other regions were also under the state's regional stay-at-home orders activated after a region dips under 15% ICU capacity.San Diego County reported 348 coronavirus ICU cases on Wednesday and an additional 2,598 COVID-19 cases.Van Gorder said the county and hospitals project that hospitalizations will continue to grow and peak on Jan. 10, 2021, with about 1,827 patients, and ICU cases will peak on Jan. 11, with about 483 patients."Today, the governor announced the federal medical station at Palomar Medical Center is going to be activated. Facebook users in the United States who want to run certain ads on the platform will need to hand over the last four digits of their social security number and a picture of a government-issued ID.The social network now requires anyone who wants to run ads related to political campaigns, civil rights, immigration, guns, economy, and other issues, to prove they're in the United States. Part of the proof required is the last four digits of your Social Security number.The move is part of a series of initiatives by Facebook to increase transparency on the platform after a Russian government-linked troll group spent thousands of rubles?on Facebook ads targeting Americsans ahead of the 2016 presidential election.In addition to a Social Security number, users wishing to buy ads will need to provide a picture of a government-issued ID and a US mailing address. Once Facebook verifies the information submitted, the company will mail a code to the provided address to authorize the user's Facebook account to buy ads.Facebook declined to share what services it uses to verify Social Security numbers and other personal details.
