PITTSBURGH, United States, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called on world leaders to make every effort to promote global economic growth and a comprehensive, balanced and sustainable socioeconomic development.     In a speech at the Group of 20 (G-20) economic summit in Pittsburgh, Hu said the world economy has seen positive signs since the two G-20 summits held in Washington in November and in London in April.     "The international community's confidence has strengthened, financial markets have moved toward stability and the world economy has seen positive signs," the Chinese president said.     Hu warned that the foundation of an economic recovery is not yet solid, and that many uncertainties remain.     "A primary task at present," he said, "is to counter the international financial crisis and promote a healthy world economic recovery." But more importantly, he said, it manifests itself in the imbalances in global wealth distribution, resource availability and consumption and the international monetary system.     "The root cause, however, is the yawning development gap between the North and the South," Hu said.     He called on world leaders to build up international institutions that promote balanced development.     "We should scale up input in development in diverse forms ... We should value the important role of technological cooperation in promoting balanced development, reduce man-made barriers to technology transfer, and create an enabling environment for developing countries to narrow the development gap," Hu said.     The Chinese leader said his country has attached great importance to comprehensive, balanced and sustainable socioeconomic growth, and has mainly relied on expanding domestic demand, in mitigating the impact of the international financial crisis.     "In the first half of this year, despite the drastic contraction in overseas demand, China's GDP managed to grow by 7 percent year-on-year," he said.     Hu said that China has taken an active role in international development cooperation, and has been actively engaged in international cooperation to tackle the crisis since it broke out.     He said China will follow through on its assistance pledges and measures in a responsible manner, and within its capabilities offer more help to developing countries, particularly the least developed nations in Africa.     "I am confident that with the concerted efforts of the entire international community, we will prevail over this international financial crisis and usher in a more prosperous future for the world economy," he said.     Leaders from the Group of 20 gathered in Pittsburgh on Thursday and Friday to discuss ways to promote a recovery from the world economic and financial crisis.

URUMQI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Tests of victims' samples found no dangerous viruses or chemicals involved in a string of bizarre hypodermic syringe stabbings in Urumqi, capital of China's far western Xinjiang region, a military medical expert said Sunday.     Qian Jun, head of the disease control and biological security office with China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences, said the academy's Beijing lab found no needle injury samples were tainted with radioactive substances, toxic chemicals or HIV virus.     The samples were not contaminated with other dangerous viruses or substances either, such as anthrax bacillus, yersinia pestis, francisella tularensis, brucella and botulinum toxin, Qian told a press briefing.     Local and military medical experts have rechecked about 250 victims and found no clearly worsening wounds or serious illnesses, he noted.     By Sept. 4, local authorities had confirmed 531 victims of hypodermic syringe stabbings in Urumqi, 171 of whom showed obvious syringe marks. The majority of the victims were of the Han ethnic group.     Tens of thousands of angry and panic residents in Urumqi took to the streets last week, protesting against needle attacks and demanding security guarantees.     Qian suggested offering more psychological counselling to ease anxiety and depression of the victims as many are haunted with lingering fears of hidden infections.     The Urumqi General Hospital affiliated to the Lanzhou Military Area Command has arranged three psychological experts and opened four counselling hotlines to help ease victims' fears and panic.     Wang Wenxian, deputy director of the Urumqi municipal public security bureau, said the needle stabbings did not cause serious damages to the victims' health, but they caused public panic and disturbed social order.     The acts violated China's Criminal Law and should be harshly punished accordingly, Wang told reporters.     A court in Urumqi said three Uygurs were given jail terms ranging from seven to 15 years Saturday over syringe stabbings or threatening to use needle attacks for robbery.     Wang added that more police and armed police forces would patrol on the city's streets and those who offer tip-offs for needle attackers would receive rewards.     He also urged the attackers to surrender to the police, saying those who surrender or report others' crimes could receive lighter punishment.

TAIPEI, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan is on high alert and taking early actions including pre-storm evacuations in expectation of typhoon Parma, barely two months after typhoon Morakot devastated the island.     More than 1,200 villagers from four counties including Nantou, Chiayi, Kaohsiung and Pingtung have been evacuated as of 1 p.m. on Sunday, in case of mudslides triggered by Parma. These people were sheltered in safer places, local authorities said.     "Taiwan has been working hard to get ready for the typhoon, in the hope of reducing people's losses. Even if Parma doesn't come, we take it as successful relief exercises," said Wu Den-yih, head of "Executive Yuan"on the island.     Wu and deputy head Chu Liluan inspected precaution work against the typhoon in various places on Sunday.     It started raining after noon Sunday in Taitung County, and evacuation in several villages were completed in the evening. Classes in a village schools would be suspended on Monday, local media reported.     Chou Hsi-wei, head of Taipei County, said on Sunday authorities of cities, towns and counties could decide by themselves whether to suspend classes or work.     In early morning of Sunday, Taiwan's meteorological authorities issued warnings of torrential rain across the island from Sunday to Wednesday. PINGYAO, Shanxi, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition exclusively dedicated to Canadian surgeon Henry Norman Bethune opened Saturday at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in north China's Shanxi Province.     Bethune is a household name in China, a country where he saved numerous lives and sacrificed his own in 1939 during China's War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression.     "He is noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people," Chairman Mao wrote in his article In Memory of Norman Bethune.     The exhibition consists of 41 photos of Dr. Bethune living and working in China, some of which had never been shown before.     "As Canadians, we are all proud to be associated with this visionary adventurer and deeply touched by the respect and recognition shown to him here in China," said Canadian Ambassador to China, David Mulroney.     Most of the pictures were provided by Wang Yan, daughter of ShaFei, who was a forefather of China's news photography and a close friend of Bethune.     "I remember that I was touched when I first read about Bethune in my school days and now it feels like looking at the pictures of an old friend who has just passed away," said visitor Wu Jun.     "Many people love Bethune for they have learnt his deeds and spirit in Chairman Mao's article while my affection for him comes from his friendship with my father," Wang said. "Bethune was my father's mentor as he exemplified the essence of communism."     Upon his death Bethune left his Kodak Retina camera to Sha Fei.     Bethune also healed Japanese soldiers, took pictures of them, which were sent back to Japan.     "He wished the Japanese people would protest against the war when they saw how their sons were suffering on battlefield. He was a true humanist," Wang said.     Just before he died, Bethune wrote in a letter, saying that the last two years (those he spent in China) have been the most significant, the most meaningful years of his life.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's top aircraft manufacturer, said Sunday total sales revenue in its auto business would reach 30 billion yuan (about 4.39 billion U.S. dollars) by 2017.     Geng Ruguang, deputy general manager of AVIC, said making big passenger vehicles has become the the corporations's guiding plan for development in its auto business.     Geng revealed the figure at a ceremony marking AVIC and its partner Volvol's new product Silver 900 series going into production line.     The series is a new type of big and luxurious passenger vehicles, 12 meters long, which could be used for road transportation, tourist reception, and military equipment.     The Silver 900 series was developed by Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation, a joint venture established in 1994 by AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co. ltd, and the Swedish bus and truck maker Volvo company.     The Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation expects to produce annually 4,000 vehicles by 2014.
