BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- A total of 248 people were arrested in China last year for involvement in food safety cases, food safety authorities said Sunday.The country dealt with 130,000 cases involving food safety last year, including 115 criminal cases, according to a statement of the National Food Safety Regulating Work Office.The cases touched upon such areas as production of edible agricultural produce, food production, food circulation, catering services and food exports and imports,"No major incident occurred last year, and the overall food safety situation maintained stable," said the statement.Last year also saw a nationwide crackdown on "gutter oil", usually made from discarded kitchen waste that has been refined, after media reports that it was commonly used by small restaurants.Since July when the State Council, or Cabinet, ordered the eradication of "gutter oil", 165.7 tons of edible oil has been confirmed to have been disqualified and produced by unknown sources.Chinese authorities since July last year have also cracked down on the use of undisposed tainted milk powder produced before the melamine scandal of 2008.About 2,132 tonnes of melamine-tainted milk powder was seized in the latest crackdown, the statement said.A total of 191 officials were punished for failing to do their duty in food safety enforcement, with 26 of them fired, it said.In July last year, Dongyuan milk powder, produced in west China's Qinghai Province, was found to contain excessive levels of melamine, a toxic chemical normally used in the manufacturing of plastics, which triggered the nationwide crackdown.It is the latest blitz on tainted milk products since 2008 when melamine-tainted milk powder killed at least six infants and sickened 300,000 children across the country.

MOHE, Heilongjiang, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Some 1.318 million tonnes of crude oil had flowed through an oil pipeline from Russia's far-east to China by Jan. 31, a month after the pipeline began operating, an officer of the Chinese operator of the pipeline said.The pipeline, which originates in the Russian town of Skovorodino in the far-eastern Amur region, enters China at Mohe and terminates at Daqing City of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.The facility withstood the test of the severe coldness since it was put into operation on Jan. 1 and no production accident has been reported so far, said Gou Hanghai, director of the Mohe administration station of the pipeline.The pipeline remains a daily oil delivering capacity of 42,000 tonnes, he saidThe 1,000-km-long pipeline will transport 15 million tonnes of crude oil from Russia to China per year from 2011 to 2030, according to an agreement signed between the two countries.Some 72 kilometers of the pipeline is in Russia and 927 kilometers of it is in China.

Shortly afterwards, a month-long cold wave with heavy snow hit their hometown, as well as the majority of southern China.It would have been "terrible" to stay in the old home in such cold weather, said 66-year-old Chen Houlian, a villager from the Tongzi County of southwestern China's Guizhou Province.Dropping temperatures and occasional sleet were predicted before this year's lunar New Year festival, which begins next Thursday.Behind the new home stood their old adobe cottage, with visible cracks on the clay walls. Wooden doors and window frames of that cottage were covered with black smoke due to more than 40 years of indoor cooking, while those of the new house were painted bright blue.In fact, the old house might collapse after the heavy snow, according to Jin Jing, deputy head of the County.Chen's family was one of the poorest in town. The farmland they grew crops on barely produced enough corn and cabbage to meet their needs, while the minimum living subsistence allowance of 2,200 yuan (334 U.S. dollars) each year was their total annual income.They would never be able to afford to build a new home on their own without receiving financial aid from a government project, Jin added.Chen's new house cost over 40,000 yuan. LOS ANGELES, May 5 (Xinhua) -- NASA has selected three planetary missions from which it will pick one potential mission to look at Mars' interior for the first time, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Thursday.The Mars mission, to be launched in 2016, would be led by JPL, according to the announcement.The other two missions would study an extraterrestrial sea on one of Saturn's moons; or study in unprecedented detail the surface of a comet's nucleus, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.The selected investigations could reveal much about the formation of our solar system and its dynamic processes, JPL said.Each mission will receive three million dollars to conduct its mission's concept phase or preliminary design studies and analyses, JPL said in a news release.After another detailed review in 2012 of the concept studies, NASA will select one to continue development efforts leading up to launch. The selected mission will be cost-capped at 425 million dollars, not including launch vehicle funding, according to JPL.NASA's Discovery Program requested proposals for spaceflight investigations in June 2010. A panel of NASA and other scientists and engineers reviewed 28 submissions."NASA continues to do extraordinary science that is re-writing textbooks," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
