(KGTV) — Imagine swimming when suddenly hundreds of fins start gliding through the water around you.Local beachgoers may be familiar with the sight, as shown in recently captured drone video in La Jolla. The video shows a mesmerizing view of the massive grouping of leopard sharks, about 4- to 5-foot long, swimming off the coast.Andrew Nosal, a professor and marine biologist at University of San Diego, recorded the video Monday — he also studied the sharks extensively for his dissertation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.According to Nosal, the gathering, while perhaps intimidating to some, isn't all that rare.RELATED: Killer whale pod preys on dolphins off Southern California coast"Group formation ... is a common behavior for leopard sharks. In La Jolla, these leopard sharks are mostly (over 95%) mature pregnant females," Nosal said. "So, beachgoers should resist the temptation to touch or harass the sharks, which is a bad idea anyway, but also illegal because these sharks are inside a marine protected area."And if one is caught up in the swimming frenzy, there's no need to panic."...Enjoy the experience," Nosal said. "They will not bite unless grabbed. They are otherwise quite skittish and hard to approach. It is best to float still near the surface and allow the sharks to swim close." 2083

Las Vegas police say they have found the body of a young child inside of a duffel bag after a mother told them that her 3-year-old daughter disappeared during a walk to a local grocery store.The woman called police around 9 p.m. local time Thursday. She told police she was walking with her four young children to Albertson’s, across the street from her apartment complex.The child's grandmother also contacted Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas and told the TV station that her grandchild was missing.Police officers searched the woman’s apartment first, not finding anything, and then the neighborhood. They decided to search the apartment again because parts of the woman’s story did not add up.During the second search, the body of a small child was found in a bag in a closet. Police officers detected a strong odor and it appears the body may have been in the closet for a few days. The woman was placed in custody and the other three children are in protective custody.The missing girl's father was arrested earlier this week after police received a call about a domestic disturbance.   1115

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. "You could hear him laughing from the sergeant's office. You could hear him coming down the hallway ... LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The future of organ transportation may be passing through La Jolla. Physicians at Scripps Green Hospital recently moved a donated liver from Escondido to La Jolla in a new transport system before successfully transplanting it into a police officer. The effort was part of a clinical trial evaluating the transportation system, known as OCS (Organ Care System) Liver, at several major transplant medical centers across the United States. “It’s almost like putting the organ back in the body right away,” said Christopher Marsh, M.D, organ transplant surgeon and division head of Scripps Center for Organ and Cell Transplantation. The OCS is relatively larger than a microwave and pumps oxygenated blood along with other nutrients to the livers in transit. “We are constantly challenged by a shortage of livers to meet the transplant needs of our patients,” added Marsh, “warm perfusion transportation has the potential to expand the supply of organs that are available to our patients and, as a result, improve the chances of a successful transplant and a positive long-term health outcome for more of our patients.” Scripps expect to enroll nine more patients using the mechanical system in the clinical trial over the next year. 1263

LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas police arrested a man Saturday after he climbed on a wing of a large passenger airplane at the city's international airport.Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it responded to a call of a man on the tarmac at McCarran Airport at about 1:32 p.m. local time on Saturday.When they arrived, police say they found a man on the wing of an Alaska Airlines flight headed to Portland.
