High school sports programs around the country are trying to figure out what the fall season will look like. In California, the sports season will be delayed until December or January. So, what does that mean for students hoping to play in college?Julian Jenkins is a Senior Regional Recruiting Director for Next College Student Athlete, the largest athletic recruiting network in the world. “So it puts you in a pickle. 'How am I going to get recruited? My son is not playing for these 3-4 months, how is he or she in her sport gonna get recruited' and that’s a big question," said Jenkins.In baseball, a pickle is when a base runner is caught between two players throwing the ball back and forth. Off the field, it's students who are now trapped in the stands.“Our number one job is to help them fill their roster spots every year with potential candidates for these opportunities," Jenkins said.They work with college and high school coaches, club coaches, athletic administrators and families. They were online before the pandemic and have been around 20 years. “College coaches don’t have endless time. They’d love to be everywhere at all times, they’d love to go to every single high school game, every club tournament, but they can’t be, so they come to our website and reach out directly to our people and say 'I need an outsider hitter in volleyball, I need a quarterback in football.'"Before Covid-19, recruiters from NCSA were at every live sports event you can think of. More than 500 last year. Now, there's lots of layers to what happens next, as regions try to figure out what the sports season looks like. Jenkins says students should know that a pause on the field doesn't mean a pause in college recruiting. “A lot of these students have academics. A lot of them have game video, but in sports like baseball, soccer, softball, they have skills video and some experience they can share with college coaches,” Jenkins said.California's sports season might be delayed but other states aren't at this point. Which means the push to get ahead and the competition to get to that next level just got more intense. “The power of technology is very powerful and there’s a big technology gap out there. But we’re encouraged by students using their cell phones and filming themselves in their workouts and we cannot minimize the positive power of coaches,” Jenkins added.As for developing players who may or may not have been discovered, Jenkins stresses training and practice.“Not necessarily the type where you have the whole team there, you’re giving them the platform. We have Zoom and Microsoft as opportunities to connect, where coaches are saying this is your workout,” she explained.Colleges are still filling their rosters and NCSA is still getting contacted about athletes. Some are traveling, playing tournaments in other states. And there's a new dynamic out there. All of a sudden, there's time to network. To figure out what school you really want, or perhaps, to work on your SAT score. To get your grades up. To properly fill out that college application.“Can you build relationships with colleges? Absolutely. If there is a delay it's maybe in certain sports that haven’t developed a virtual, but every college coach out there is having to develop more virtually because of the dead period of when college coaches can physically see players play in person has been pushed back for months,” Jenkins said.Some athletes are taking community college courses so they have a leg up for college should they decide to further their athletic career. And Jenkins says, a word of advice for students and families, this is a small time out in your lifetime. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- Health officials say there has been a confirmed case of Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, in Hillsborough County, Florida.The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater like lakes, rivers, ponds and canals, according to the Department of Health. Infections can happen when the contaminated water enters the body through the nose. The peak season for Naegleria fowleri is July through September. The amoeba is found is more common in the southern states, DOH said.Infection is very rare in Florida, as there have been only 37 reported cases with exposure in the state since 1962, according to DOH. FULTON COUNTY, Ind. -- The 24-year-old driver who struck and killed three kids while they crossed the street to board their school bus told police she saw the lights but didn't realize it was a bus until the kids were in front of her. Alyssa Shepherd was arrested at her place of employment Tuesday evening and charged with three counts of reckless homicide and one count of disregarding the stop arms on a school bus causing injury. Police say she was driving a Toyota Tacoma on State Road 25 around 7:30 a.m. when she "disregarded" the stop arm and lights on a stopped school bus in front of a mobile home park, striking four kids who were crossing the street to board the bus. Alivia Stahl, 9, and her twin brothers, Xzavier and Mason Ingle, 6, were all pronounced dead at the scene. Maverick Lowe, 11, was flown to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne in critical condition with multiple broken bones and internal injuries. His family released a statement on Wednesday saying he is in stable condition and recovering. A probable cause hearing was recorded in Fulton County Superior Court on Tuesday where investigators and officers were interviewed following the crash as state police sought a warrant to arrest Shepherd. In that recorded hearing, Indiana State Police Detective Michelle Jumper recalled the information given to her by the bus driver, Shepherd and a witness that was behind Shepherd following the crash. The Bus DriverJumper said the bus driver said he had driven that same route for "a couple of years" and that he had stopped and activated his lights as he normally does in the morning before he waves the kids across the street to get on the bus. The bus driver told Jumper that he looked and saw the vehicle at a distance and waved the kids to cross the road because he figured there was no reason that the driver wouldn't stop. Jumper said the bus driver didn't realize the vehicle wasn't stopping until it was near his bus and he hit his horn at the last second, but there was nothing he could do. The Witness Driving Behind Alyssa ShepherdJumper said the witness told her she had been following the pickup truck in front of her for a while and was going about 55 miles per hour when she caught up to her. The driver said they went around the corner and she could tell there was a school bus stopped with all of its lights activated so she started to slow down. The driver told Jumper that she realized the truck in front of her was not slowing down as she saw the headlights illuminate the kids as they were crossing the road. Alyssa ShepherdShepherd told Jumper that she does not typically drive her husband to work, but that she had just dropped him off Tuesday morning and had three children in the back seat of the vehicle. Shepherd said she was not sure how fast she was going but that she is typically a "slow driver." She told Jumper that she was not late for anything that morning and that she was taking her little brother to her mother's house so that he could get ready for school. Jumper said Shepherd told her she came around the corner and saw the lights, but was not sure what they were and by the time she realized that it was a school bus the kids were right in front of her.  Shepherd is the children's director at Faith Outreach Center, a Foursquare Gospel Church in Rochester, Ind. HORTONVILLE, Wis — Benshot, a northeast Wisconsin company that produces glassware embedded with bullets, gifted handguns to staff as an early Christmas present. The company staffs 16 full-time employees and gifted the handguns as an effort to promote personal safety and team building, according to the The Post Crescent.Owner Ben Wolfram told the paper that this is the first time in their three years of business that they've gifted guns to workers. Grand Canyon’s entire men’s basketball team has been placed in quarantine after four players and two support staff members tested positive for COVID-19.All 14 players and two student managers are in quarantine at a designated on-campus residence hall for the next two weeks.Players began reporting for voluntary individual workouts last week and were placed in quarantine for 72 hours pending results of coronavirus tests and physicals. Four players who were asymptomatic tested positive at the end of the 72 hours and were placed in quarantine while contact tracing was conducted.Players who tested negative were placed in quarantine as a precaution and will be tested again.
