A new school year means tons of students are embarking on their first solo living experiences in college dorms around the country. But with that new responsibility comes great power — usually about 1100 watts of it.The Ball State University Police Department posted a hilarious reminder on their Facebook page telling students that the microwaves in their dorms do more than just warm snacks and reheat day-old coffee. They can also set off the fire alarms in the dorms."Every year starts with multiple fire alarms in Ball State Housing," Ball State Unviersity police posted on social media. "Most if not all of these fire alarms are preventable."They offered tips on how to heat up many college student staples, including Pop-Tarts, brownies, Kraft macaroni and cheese, oatmeal and popcorn.Pop-Tarts "must be removed from their aluminum foil prior to placing in the microwave," they wrote. "Microwave for 3 SECONDS not 3 minutes."They also gently reminded their Muncie, Indiana, students that brownies, mac and cheese and oatmeal usually need some kind of liquid added to them, whether it's milk or water. And, of course, they cited popcorn as the worst offender of setting off fire alarms unnecessarily. Students should "stay with your food," they said. "When you no longer hear the popping sound, stop the microwave. Overcooking causes scorching which causes fire alarms."Heed this warning, college kids. There's nothing more inconvenient than scorched food and an entire dorm of sleepy students glaring at you and your smoking popcorn. 1551

A migrant shelter in Tornillo, Texas that's housed thousands of children may close next month.A tent-like facility in Texas that houses unaccompanied migrant children may close next month after they are all released to parents or sponsors in the US. That's according to an official who spoke with several news outlets, including CNN and CBS News. The migrant shelter is located near the Tornillo-Guadalupe Port of Entry and operated by BCFS, a nonprofit that operates health and human services programs. The shelter opened this past summer with a capacity of about 300 people. Now, it reportedly houses between 2,400 to 2,800 children. The official told news outlets the facility will no longer accept children and will close after the last child is released to either a sponsor or another facility run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. The federal government's contract with BCFS will expire on December 31st, and the source says the non-profit does not plan to extend it.An exact closing date for the facility has not yet been announced. American political leaders are grappling with a public health and economic maelstrom — as well as concerns for their own safety. President Donald Trump says his administration will ask Congress to pass payroll tax relief, as he looks to calm financial markets' fears over the impact of the new coronavirus epidemic. Trump told reporters Monday that the administration was seeking “very substantial relief."This, as fears about the coronavirus outbreak roil financial markets. The White House says it's conducting “business as usual,” playing down the political consequences of an epidemic that poses one of the greatest tests yet to Trump's administration. On Capitol Hill, at least five lawmakers are in self-quarantine as discussions continue on how to address the virus outbreak and economic volatility. Trump lashed out in tweets Monday, protesting the steep market drop and news that large public gatherings are being called off because of the virus. The current estimate of cases is around 650, with 26 coronavirus-related deaths. 1048

A number of states in the last 24 hours have taken the extraordinary step of closing most entertainment venues hoping to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. These restrictions are in line with recommendations by the CDC to limit the number of people in one location. Here are some of the states who have announced these measures:Louisiana: On Monday, Gov. John Bel Edwards said he is limiting the size of gatherings to fewer than 50 people, closing casinos, bars and movie theaters and limiting restaurants to delivery, take out and drive-through orders only.Michigan: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will shut down all movie theaters. Her announcement came in conjunction with the closure of all dine-in restaurants. New York: Gyms, movie theaters and casinos will be closed, statewide, effective 8:00 p.m. Monday.Ohio: After previously closing casinos, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Monday that all recreation centers, movie theaters, bowing alleys, gyms and similar places of entertainment will close. --In addition to the aforementioned states, a number of major cities, like San Francisco and Los Angeles, have closed places of entertainment.
