SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family grieved the loss of a father, mother and daughter after a raging fire at their Logan Heights home in October.Thursday evening Aunt Rosa Cortes explained how the two surviving children, Wendy, 23, and Angel, 16, were faring. She described areas of Wendy's back and shoulder healing from the burns, saying her skin is getting it's color back.She said her niece and nephew are having a hard time sleeping, saying in Spanish, "every noise, every sound scares them."The fire ignited October 13th, around 4:30 a.m.. Neighbors woke up to screams. Ultimately the father, Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Daughter Iris, 21, and mother, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, died from their injuries.Aunt Rosa said Jose was her favorite brother. She called him her protector.Now she's protecting his two surviving children, saying they can continue staying with her as long as they need.Thursday the family reunited inside Faith on 54th in Oak Park.Cortes said the caskets remained closed and she didn't want to remember them the way they died.Her nephew, Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested on Arson and Homicide charges.She said Wendy and Angel haven't been told about their brother's possible involvement, instead waiting for them to heal before asking questions.Cortes said they need help, psychologically and monetarily to move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoover High School Friday celebrated the topping off of one of its newest additions to campus.The campus set the final beam of its new 500-seat theater into place, with students and staff signing the steel beam before a crane lifted it into place. The event marked the latest completion in the school's massive renovation project, which has already seen the return of the school's once iconic tower. The tower, which was topped off in January 2019, could once be seen from El Cajon Blvd., before it was taken down in 1976 due to seismic safety standards.Once the renovations are completed, Hoover High will have not only its Spanish-style tower back but also a new theater with theater support and instructional space, and a three-story building accommodating counselors, support staff, and students.The new classroom building will feature 20 classrooms to replace outdated modular classrooms elsewhere on campus.The project will also see a reconfiguration of the main parking lot, courtyard improvements, and a student drop-off area. 1062

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Health officials issued two new public health orders Monday addressing cruise ships arriving in San Diego during the coronavirus pandemic.The orders are meant to give the county more legal framework in how the Port of San Diego interacts with ships and the cruise industry, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county's medical director of epidemiology, said.RELATED: San Diego gyms ordered to close in new coronavirus health orderThe new orders include:"No passenger or employee may disembark a cruise ship in San Diego harbor without the approval of the health officer or designee if any person on the cruise ship has tested positive for COVID-19. Any cruise ship that is permitted to dock in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment required for passenger/employee and follow all directives from the health officer or designee.No cruise ship in San Diego harbor may dock or disembark employees or passengers after March 31, 2020. However, upon approval of the health officer, a cruise ship may dock solely for the purposes of receiving fuel and provisions, so long as no employee or passenger disembarks. Cruise ships docked in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment for a passenger/employee and shall follow all directives of the health officer or designee.""I know there have been questions about ships that have come before and I can say that the individuals who have all departed these ships in the past to-date and tomorrow all have been screened, have no symptoms, and have no fever, and are leaving to go to their homes of record to complete 14-days of CDC recommended quarantine," McDonald said.
