In a report to Congress Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission recommended designating a three-digit dialing code to assist those considering suicide.According to a press release from the agency, the FCC recommended designating "988" as a nationwide code to connect those in need with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline."There is a suicide epidemic in this country, and it is disproportionately affecting at-risk populations, including our Veterans and LGBTQ youth," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a 526
Lauren Mulvihill did not know what to expect when she was called to the hospital for an Uber pick up.89-year-old Ronald Dembner had just been discharged from the hospital with no one to take him home.Last week, Mulvihill drove Dembner from the hospital in Henry County, Georgia, to his home and helped him inside. When she saw the terrible condition of his home, she knew she needed to help.Dembner, who Mulvihill calls Mr. Ronald, is a widower and veteran who now lives alone with his dog King. He has no living family. Mulvihill said that Dembner had not called someone to help clean his house out of fear they would take it away from him.The veteran has been living in squalor. Dembner has his wits about him, but he has a hard time getting around, cleaning the house and picking up after his dog.Mulvihill knew she couldn't clean up the house herself. That's when the single mom went to Facebook to call for help. The response was overwhelming.Dozens of volunteers came forward and began to clean and help strip apart the house. In just a week's time, they have already removed all of the garbage, the old furniture and the old carpet. The next step is painting the walls and putting in new floor. They're also trying to get someone to come fix the mold situation, Mulvihill says the work can be at lot at times but she tries to work one room at a time. The public Facebook group, 1395
It's time for another notable celestial event. Be sure to cast your gaze toward the sky for 2019's Strawberry Moon. And for the keen-eyed, there's a heavenly bonus with a prominent appearance from one of our fellow planets. So you're not disappointed or confused, first things first: The moon isn't going to actually look like a big, round strawberry. That's because in North America, the name comes from Algonquin tribes of Native Americans. This full moon was their sign to 487
Josh Snider hoped the government shutdown would mean fewer crowds at Big Bend National Park during his Christmas Eve hike, even if it meant no visitor services or staff patrolling the Texas countryside. Then, he fell and broke his leg about 1.5 miles into the trek. Suddenly, he needed help -- and people.Fortunately, although rescue services were limited due to the shutdown, other people were close by, he said. A family of four, another hiker and a park ranger carried Snider out of Santa Elena Canyon to safety."It turned out to be one of the most beautiful moments ever," Snider said. "It was great to see everyone come together to help get me out of the canyon."Unlike some previous government shutdowns, in which national parks closed entirely, gates have remained opened under the Trump administration, though parks are severely understaffed. CNN has reached out to Big Bend for comment on this incident.Big Bend, which covers 1,252 square miles in southwest Texas, including the Chisos Mountains and a large swath of the Chihuahuan Desert, is 1063
James Holzhauer, a 34-year-old professional gambler from Las Vegas, obliterated the all-time single-day record on the quiz show "Jeopardy!," earning 0,914 on Tuesday. Holzhauer, harking back to his profession, used a trio of huge bets en route to the all-time record. The previous record Jeopardy! single-game record was ,000 set by Roger Craig in 2010.“I said all along that I wanted to break Roger Craig’s one-game record and I did it,” Holzhauer said.Earning 0,914 was significant to Holzhauer, whose daughter was born November 9, 2014 (11/09/14).Holzhauer drew some gasps from the audience by calling for a true Daily Double early in Double Jeopardy. He was able to double his earnings to ,200. Later in Double Jeopardy, he wagered ,000 in the other Daily Double.Going into Final Jeopardy with ,600 -- a lead of ,600 -- Holzhauer wagered ,314, and answered correctly in the category "physics terms." Holzhauer won by more than ,000.After winning just four episodes with total winnings of 4,365, Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was already making a dubious comparison. “Is it too soon to make Ken Jennings comparisons," Trebek remarked at the end of the episode. Jennings set the Jeopardy record of winning 74 consecutive episodes. 1272
