SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who pointed what turned out to be a pellet gun at two San Diego police officers who followed her into a downtown parking structure during the Rock-N-Roll marathon is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.Mona Elease Williams, 59, pleaded guilty in September to a pair of felony counts of resisting an executive officer by threat or violence. She faces a maximum of eight years and four months in state prison.On the third day of the defendant's preliminary hearing three months ago, Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon dismissed allegations that Williams personally used a deadly weapon in the crimes. He said that because he couldn't prove that the pellet gun was loaded, the allegations had to be dismissed.Williams -- who has convictions for burglary in 1986 and assault in 2003 and was sent to prison in 2015 -- would have faced 62 years to life behind bars if convicted as charged.The defendant's good friend, Lisa Wilson, testified that Williams texted ``death by cop'' hours before the June 3 confrontation with officers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man smashed a display case at a Mira Mesa jewelry store and stole several necklaces, police said Tuesday.The theft was reported shortly after 6:50 p.m. Monday at Daniel's Jewelers in the shopping center near Mira Mesa Boulevard and Camino Ruiz, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man entered the store and smashed a glass display case with a hammer, Buttle said, adding that the thief did not threaten the employee.The thief then grabbed several necklaces from the display case and fled in an unknown direction, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 Black man in his late 20s. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - National University announced Wednesday its Board of Trustees approved a plan to reduce the cost of attendance through tuition cuts of up to 25% for full-time students and adding scholarships that will make enrollment nearly free for Pell Grant eligible students.The actions -- made possible through a 2019 gift to the La Jolla university's reserve fund by philanthropist T. The switch malfunction on a utility pole on Hawken Drive in Otay Mesa occurred shortly before 1 p.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The equipment failure sent melted materials dripping onto the ground, setting grass and other vegetation on fire, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to subdue the flames, which blackened about a half-acre of brushy terrain, Munoz said. No structural damage or injuries were reported. Utility crews expected to have power restored to the affected areas, which included pars of Nestor, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro, by early evening, SDG&E spokeswoman Jessica Packard said. 929

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego City Council committee signed off Thursday on the proposed sale of a vacant city-owned property on Cortez Hill to a nonprofit agency for less than ,000 to create more than 100 units of affordable housing.The .4-acre property at 1449 Ninth Ave. was most recently the site of the now-vacant Cortez Hill Family Center, which housed homeless families.The City Council's Land Use and Housing Committee unanimously approved the proposal to sell the property for ,593 to Community Housing Works, which develops, rehabilitates, preserves and operates affordable apartment communities in San Diego and throughout the state.The sale will now move to the full City Council for consideration.According to a staff report, the low price is justified because "the property sale furthers the public purpose of providing low-income rental housing for 55 years, the number of affordable housing units will be increased, and the city will be relieved of administrative costs and liabilities associated with managing and maintaining the property."Councilman Chris Ward, the committee's chairman, said the building has served an important role, and he's grateful to Community Housing Works for proposing to create a net affordable housing gain."We are eager to get started and to keep working," said Mary Jane Jagodzinski, Community Housing Works' vice president of housing and real estate development.The proposal calls for Community Housing Works to demolish the existing three-story structure and its 48 units and build anywhere between 75 and 110 units, at least 44 of which would be for people or families making 30% or less of the Area Median Income. The property would also have up to three manager units.The city acquired the property -- formerly a Days Inn hotel -- in 2001 for transitional housing for homeless families. The rest of the people at the city's transitional homeless shelters -- such as Cortez Hill -- were shuffled to central locations to allow for easier tracking of the virus and to prevent spread of the illness.Alpha Project vacated the building on May 8 and the city officially declared the property "surplus" on May 19.The city's sale is contingent on the development of affordable housing on the property.
