PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – From China to Egypt and beyond, the halls of history span the globe.Yet, it’s been lonesome lately in those halls at some of the 35,000 museums across the country.“We, of course, wanted to reopen as soon as we could and safe a manner as we could,” said Melissa Smith, CEO of the Penn Museum in Philadelphia.It’s one of the few major museums to recently reopen to visitors, after coronavirus restrictions forced them to close their doors for months.“For the most part, it's business as usual with our exhibits,” Smith said.First, though, a task force of 35 museum employees needed to figure out what changes might be needed.“We had to look at a number of things,” Smith said.Among the changes: masks are a must, hand sanitizing stations are now located throughout the museum, clear partitions were installed to protect staff who interact with visitors and benches were marked off, so people can sit socially-distanced.Also, arrows now line the stairs and floors, carefully choreographing how visitors move through the exhibits.“They asked us to follow the arrows and it kind of was a different museum experience, but also I think very helpful, just because there wasn't any confusion,” said museum visitor Soheil Eshghi.There are a few other changes, too: some of the exhibits around the museum have touchscreens, so visitors can dig a little deeper into what’s on display and learn more. The museum is now giving out a disposable stylus to visitors, so they can safely use the touchscreens.Visitors said they don’t mind the changes and are just happy for the chance to come back.“I think that’s one of the things that I've been missing the most since all this shutdown started happening,” said Camille Lawhead, who was visiting the museum.Now, visitors no longer need to be missing it. 1813

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A handful of parents are fuming over a sex ed course being taught in their children’s school and the religious group that's teaching it.Mona Mangat, the mom of an 8th-grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Pinellas County, Florida, said she and other parents are “angry about this, upset about this and trying to figure out how this is possible.”Mangat knew one thing for sure: Her daughter would opt out of a sex ed course being taught Thursday by the Christian faith-based group More2Life.“It’s shocking when you find out that faith-based groups are providing this information in schools. I had no idea. I thought that was not allowed in the United States, but I guess I was wrong," she explained.Mangat said she worries the curriculum is biased especially since the group is linked to a pro-life crisis pregnancy center in Largo called New Life Solutions. The More2Life group focuses on abstinence in their presentation to schools.In one presentation they told students, “Sex is like fire. It's safe in its proper context like a committed marriage, just like it's safe in a fireplace.”In another, while speaking about the high rate of STDs, a leader told students, "Have you ever played duck, duck, goose? Now it's like duck, duck, chlamydia." Scripps station WFTS in Tampa took parents' concerns straight to Jason Dorr, the director of More2Life, who said their program does not discuss religion."Our message is completely a health message,” Dorr explained.Dorr added, in line with Florida rules, they encourage abstaining from sex before marriage. The organization has spent 19 years talking to students about the consequences of STDs and teen pregnancy. “We always make this clear: We are not here to tell you what to do. This is an option for your life and we want to present that to you so you can make your own choices," Dorr added. “We are teaching them to have a healthy life and reach their goals without the consequences that can affect their future, so it's adding to what they're already learning at home.”Dorr also said 95 percent of teachers give them high ratings and highly recommend their program to other classrooms.Mangat is fighting to get the program out of schools and swapped out for one that focuses purely on facts.“The choice to have sex is intensely personal. You have to have complete information to make that decision," Mangat added.The Pinellas County School district said students are able to opt out of the presentations. Philadelphia Police have released 911 audio from an arrest at a local Starbucks that has prompted national outrage.The audio was uploaded to the Philadelphia Police's YouTube page on Tuesday. "Hi, I have two gentlemen in my cafe that are refusing to make a purchase or leave. I'm at the Starbucks at 18th and Spruce," a female caller tells at dispatch officer.The officer told the caller that police would be out "as soon as possible."The recording also included dispatches between officers. At one point, officers request "another unit along with a supervisor" for help dealing with a two men "causing a disturbance" at the coffee shop.Later, officers inform dispatch that they've made two arrests and are en route back to headquarters.Following the arrest, Starbucks would decline to press charges and the men would be released. The woman who called police was reportedly the manager of the store. She has "left the store" while Starbucks investigates the matter.Video of the arrest filmed by a customer at the shop has been shared thousands of times on social media and prompted a rebuke by the company's CEO. Yesterday, Starbucks announced it would close 8,000 company-owned stores on May 29 to conduct racial-bias education with its employees.  1302

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A Central Florida man is on a mission to do something nobody else has ever done: become the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full Ironman.Chris Nikic has become an inspiration to people around the world and it started with a simple mission.Nik Nikic encouraged his son to push himself 1% more each day.“We came up with this concept of just get a little better today than yesterday,” Nik explained.Now, 21-year-old Chris is about to do something incredible. On November 7, he’ll swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a full 26.2 mile marathon in Panama City Beach.“I want to inspire others so that they can be like me and so that one day they can do it too,” Chris said with a smile.If he completes the race within 17 hours, Chris will be the first person with Down Syndrome to ever finish an Ironman.He also has a message for the other competitors: “You better watch out, because I’m going to beat you!”“Really, you’re going to beat all of them?” his dad asked.“Yeah!” Chris answered enthusiastically.Chris has spent several months swimming off the coast of Pinellas County as he trains with coach Dan Grieb for the big race and gets used to the choppy Gulf of Mexico waters.“I’ve learned that you can teach anybody anything if you’re willing to love them through their disability or love them through their struggle,” Grieb added.Chris has been documenting his journey on social media. Thousands of people all around the world have sent him messages of support, including many parents of children with Down Syndrome who say Chris is motivating their kids to also strive for excellence.“They say I’m their hero,” Chris added.Chris is already brainstorming his next target: Competing in the 2022 Special Olympics and finding a special someone to share all these accomplishments with.“I want to get married. I’m not waiting anymore. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — A 29-year-old man was robbed near the Otay Mesa border Friday night. The victim was unlocking his vehicle when an unknown Hispanic male walked up behind him and placed a "cold, metal object" against the back of his head.The suspect demanded the keys to the vehicle in Spanish and the victim complied.
