The FDA said on Tuesday it has developed guidelines to take plasma from coronavirus survivors to treat patients who are critically ill from the virus. The FDA said on Tuesday that It is possible that convalescent plasma contains antibodies to the coronavirus and might be effective against the infection. The FDA said that although the announcement is promising, convalescent plasma has not been shown to be effective in every disease studied. The FDA is not approving using plasma as a treatment, instead using it as a clinical trial and for the treatment of those who are critically ill. "Given the public health emergency that the expanding COVID-19 outbreak presents, while clinical trials are being conducted, FDA is facilitating access to COVID-19 convalescent plasma for use in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections," the FDA said. The plasma will be collected from recovered individuals only if they are eligible to donate blood. The FDA said on Sunday that it was altering its guidelines on Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS)-required testing, which allows healthcare providers to weigh the benefits of an experimental drug over its risks.“The FDA recognizes that during the COVID-19 public health emergency, the completion of some REMS-required laboratory testing or imaging studies may be difficult because patients suspected of having COVID-19 may be self-isolating and/or subject to quarantine,” said FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Amy Abernethy, M.D., Ph.D. “Under these circumstances, undergoing testing or imaging studies in order to obtain a drug that is subject to a REMS can put patients and others at risk for transmission of the coronavirus. We will continue to work with sponsors to ensure that patients have appropriate access to the medications they need.” 1843

The House is expected to vote Wednesday to send the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate. Speaker Nancy Pelosi met privately Tuesday at the Capitol with her Democratic caucus to discuss the timetable. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opened the Senate on Tuesday scoffing at the House's “bizarro” impeachment strategy. He meets later with Republican senators on terms of the trial. Trump is charged with abuse of power for pushing Ukraine to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden as he withheld aid to Ukraine. Trump is also charged with obstructing Congress' probe. He has denied wrongdoing. 654

The CDC announced on Thursday that cigarette smoking rates in the United States have reached recorded lows with just 13.7 percent of the adult population smoking cigarettes in 2018. The percentage of smokers is just one-third from the number of smokers from 50 years ago. The CDC said that 19.7 percent of American adults used tobacco products in 2018. Cigars are used by 3.9 percent of adults; e-cigarettes by 3.2 percent of adults; smokeless tobacco by 2.4 percent of adults; and pipes, water pipes, or hookahs by 1 percent. The CDC said nearly 18.8 percent of tobacco users use two or more products. “This marked decline in cigarette smoking is the achievement of a consistent and coordinated effort by the public health community and our many partners,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “Yet, our work is far from over. The health benefits of quitting smoking are significant, and we are committed to educating Americans about the steps they can take to become tobacco-free.”While overall tobacco use has declined, e-cigarette use is on the rise, especially among young adults. More than 7 percent of young adults (ages 18-24) use e-cigarettes. According to the CDC, cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. 1339

The halftime show at a Thanksgiving football game between the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions got off to a rough start.Brothers Osborne, a country music duo, only got a few notes into their first song before the music came to a halt and the lights dimmed abruptly at Ford Field in Detroit. The reason? The power had gone out.Moments later, the lights turned back on, and after a brief delay, the show resumed."Well obviously we've had a power hit here in Detroit, just a few notes into the Brothers Osborne here at halftime," announcer Joe Buck said on the broadcast, airing on FOX.A spokeswoman for DTE, a Detroit-based energy company, said in a statement that the company is working with the Lions to identify the cause of the outage.Ford Field said in a statement it was "due to an outside utility failure" and that the ensuing delay in the halftime show was due to the time it took to reset and reconnect the sound system transmitter. Many watching at home took to Twitter to comment on the incident."Just got secondhand shock from that power outage... you know EVERY tech and the control team were RUNNING," tweeted Devon Dyer."Power outage coming up clutch to give the audience enough time to look up who tf the Brothers Osborne are," said Jared Siegel."The Brothers Osbourne power outage is the most awkward musical technical issue since Ashley Simpson's SNL hoedown," said Melissa Chase. 1405

The Cincinnati Reds Twitter account might have summarized the events of Tuesday night best: "There's a lotta stuff going on rn."There sure was, as that "stuff" included Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig being involved in a benches-clearing brawl mere minutes after news broke he was being traded. The Reds were hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. The National League Central division teams already didn't like each other. Their rivalry goes back years, including a benches-clearing incident back on April 7 in Pittsburgh.Tempers would flare again, but first, a little after 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, news of a blockbuster deal began to circulate. 687
