SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — The owner of some 100 local car washes and gas stations in Southern California has been charged with failing to pay minimum wage and overtime to some 700 workers. The Orange County Register reports prosecutors say Vahid David Delrahim and his managers ordered the workers, nearly all Latino, to arrive early, but the workers were not allowed to clock in until customers arrived. When business slowed, they had to clock out but still remain on duty, waiting until more customers turned up. The result: numerous hours without pay.The U.S. Department of Labor is seeking at least million in back wages and damages.RELATED: Home Depot and Lowe's training the next generation of construction workersDelrahim's lead attorney, Rebecca Aragon, and her team call the government's claims "frivolous, vexatious and unreasonable," arguing that Delrahim was "without sufficient knowledge to admit or deny" the allegations.Prosecutors also cite the intentional "wanton destruction" of evidence. 1020

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Protesters dressed in salon gear took to the street outside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home Thursday. In video of the protest, some demonstrators are seen with curlers in their hair, plastic is draped over them and hair dryers hang from trees. The rally came two days after video of Pelosi getting her hair cut inside a California salon surfaced.California Governor Gavin Newsom lifted restrictions on hair salons serving customers indoors at the end of last month. However, the city of San Francisco still requires such services to only be provided outside.Pelosi says the salon told her it would be OK to come inside, because they are only accommodating one person at a time. She also claims the whole thing was a set-up, since the video was released to the media by the salon's owner, KGO reports. A photo of Pelosi on the same visit shows her wearing a mask around her neck instead of on her face. She says that's because she had just had her hair washed. 1004

School is back in session at Ohio State University. However, more than 200 students aren't returning to the classroom just yet after they were suspended for violating the school's new coronavirus pandemic policy.Ohio State leaders say 228 students broke campus guidelines about social gatherings since returning to campus.Students began moving back to the Columbus campus on Aug. 19. Upon their return, the university told students they needed to wear masks, practice social distancing and limit their get-togethers to no more than 10 people. There's no word on how long the students' suspensions will last, but school leaders hope it will show others how serious they are about controlling the spread of COVID-19 on campus.Several other large universities across the country have been forced to suspend classes after large outbreaks of the virus on campus. Notre Dame shifted to remote learning after 150 students tested positive for COVID-19 after a week on campus. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill made a similar shift after 130 students tested positive for the virus after a week of classes. Also last, school administrators at Syracuse University admonished a group of students for holding a large gathering on the school's quad, adding that the even may have already derailed plans for in-person learning. 1332
