(KGTV) - Coronado city leaders will begin cracking down on the dockless bicycle trend rolling around San Diego, imposing fines and impounding bikes left on the island.City leaders have moved to declare the transportation alternative a public nuisance and will start impounding bikes left in the city. Coronado has banned bike-sharing companies from setting up shop on the island, but riders are allowed to pick them up and ride them into the city.Therein lies Coronado's problem. Much like the trend around San Diego, Coronado residents have grown concerned with bikes being left on sidewalks and in the right-of-way.Ken Hewitt is one of several local bike shop owners who fought to keep the bikes off the island. "Every bike you see going by there is a potential rental," he said. "We're a small island here.  San Diego's got a lot more real estate and a lot more spaces."So, now the city plans to tag any bikes left in the public-right-of-way, remove them, and charge the companies - to pick them up. The bikes are GPS-enabled, so the city and residents say the companies should know exactly where to find them. 1174

CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV) — Some Coronado residents are shocked and confused after getting a letter from the City, urging them to read the newly released Environmental Impact Report for the airport's "Land Use Compatibility Plan."Many worried that a new airport would be coming into Naval Air Base North Island. However, as 10News discovered, the San Diego Regional Airport Authority has no plans to expand the airport into the Coronado. Custom golf cart maker, Mike Matheny and his dog, Buddy, love everything about Coronado — even the blaring jet noise. "Well, that's the sound of freedom to me," Matheny said. But when he and his neighbors got a letter from the City of Coronado, urging residents to read the Environmental Impact Report for "Naval Air Station North Island Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan," many wondered, are they expanding the airport onto the base?"I think there are other avenues," Matheny said. "Everybody's talking about Brown Field being the most ideal. Expanding that and so forth. But I don't want it here in Coronado. I know that."Just the thought of commercial planes constantly roaring above his home, the increased traffic, and property values taking a nosedive made Matheny nervous. So 10News asked the San Diego Regional Airport Authority to clear the air. Are there plans to expand the airport into Coronado?"None whatsoever," Airport Authority manager, Ralph Redman, said. It turns out the 182-page document is one of 16 state-mandated reports that assess the environmental impacts of the current airport onto surrounding neighborhoods. The report shows there are no significant impacts to Coronado residents, except in the "Land Use and Planning" category. If adopted, 1,000 residents who live in the same area as Matheny would have strict restrictions on future property developments. "We wouldn't want a school or a high rise building to be built right off the end of a runway," Redman said. "We are trying to limit the amount of density that would go into that area."So with no plans for a new airport, Matheny and Buddy can breathe a sigh of relief. Back to living the life in his sweet Coronado home. "Every time you come across the bridge, you just feel like you're in paradise," Matheny said. The Airport Authority is asking stakeholders and Coronado residents to submit their input on the Environmental Study by Feb. 7, 2020. Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has recently taken to speaking out against police violence and racial injustice. Mayfield took his activism further, writing a letter Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and members of the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board, seeking the commutation of Julius Jones, a man on death row fighting to prove his innocence in a 1999 murder.Jones was 19 years old at the time of his arrest. He was a student at the University of Oklahoma going for an engineering degree and working towards a basketball scholarship.In the summer of 1999, a 45-year-old man named Paul Howell was shot and killed during a carjacking in Edmond, Oklahoma. Jones was the prime suspect in his death, despite his claims he was home playing games and eating dinner with his family.Howell’s family was inside of his car when he was shot and killed, and described the suspect as a Black man wearing a stocking cap and a bandana across his face with “half an inch of hair” sticking out from the cap. Jones’ hair was shaved down at the time of the shooting.Jones’ co-defendant, Christopher Jordan, is believed to have set Jones up for the crime. After pleading guilty, he served 15 years in prison and is now free. Jones was sentenced to the death penalty and 40 years.While the DNA results from a bandana and a weapon found in the house have been used both as evidence of Jones’ guilt and his innocence, it was what took place during the trial that has caused celebrities and organizations—including John Legend, Kim Kardashian, Black Lives Matter, and most recently Mayfield— to speak up and fight for Jones’ commutation, stating that racial discrimination fueled the conviction of what they believe to be an innocent man.In addition to claims of racially-fueled language from officers handling Jones’ case during the court proceedings, the state dismissed all prospective Black jurors but one. One of the 12 jurors who convicted Jones and sentenced him to death confessed that another juror described the trial as “a waste of time” and said that “they should just take the n***** out and shoot him behind the jail.”Jones has maintained his innocence for nearly 20 years."As God is my witness, I was not involved in any way in the crimes that led to Howell being shot and killed," Jones said in his clemency report. "I have spent the past 20 years on death row for a crime I did not commit, did not witness and was not at."Mayfield, who played football at Oklahoma University, wrote the letter on behalf of Jones a few weeks ago, asking for the pardon and parole board, as well as the governor, to review the commutation application with “fairness and compassion.” 2670

Thursday afternoon, 12 more people were stung just days after a similar incident involving 10 to 15 people Tuesday. “I’m not used to the beach I come from Arizona so like this is actually happening,” said Angelo La Rosa, who is visiting from Arizona. “It felt like something was digging into my skin,” said 13-year-old Phoenix Stofa, who was one of at least a dozen stung Thursday. RELATED: 10 to 15 people stung by stingrays in Coronado“Yeah, yeah they don’t want to get stepped on and that’s their only defense mechanism and they have a barb,” said Sgt. Damon Bassett, a lifeguard in Coronado. Basset said he feels for those who get stung. “Anytime you get some nice weather and some warm water people don’t know to shuffle their feet. Then they can come in contact and get stung.”“Don’t walk on the water like you would on land,” Bassett added. A painful lesson for some, but still a day at the beach. “I just thought of the shark movies but it wasn’t a shark alert it was just a stingray. If it was a shark alert, I would have been more,” La Rosa said. If you do happen to get stung, lifeguards say you should soak the affected area in hot water to deactivate the venom. 1291

(AP) — A fatal shooting inside a Costco Wholesale warehouse store Friday night took place after a man attacked an off-duty police officer, the Corona Police Department said.Kenneth French, 32, of Riverside assaulted the Los Angeles Police Department officer while he was holding his young child, the department said in a statement Saturday night. The officer fired his gun, hitting French and two of French's relatives, the department said.French was killed, the department said. The relatives are in critical conditions at hospitals.The officer, whose identity is being withheld, was treated and released at a nearby hospital, and the officer's child was not injured, the department said.The officer was the only person who fired shots in the store, the department said.The shooting prompted a stampede of frightened shoppers to flee the store east of Los Angeles and seek cover inside.Witnesses said they saw a man with a Mohawk haircut arguing with someone near a freezer section when shots rang out at least six times. The man involved in the argument was killed, Corona police Lt. Jeff Edwards said.Witnesses said there was an altercation. She said her mother saw people injured on the floor."I thought maybe someone dropped a bottle of wine, but then I kept hearing shots," shopper Will Lungo told the Press-Enterprise newspaper. "An employee came in and helped us out through the emergency exit."Witnesses told KCAL-TV that shoppers and employees rushed to the exits.
