ALPINE (CNS) - A 55-year-old man died today on the Anderson Truck Trail east of El Capitan Reservoir near Alpine, authorities said.Cal Fire and units from the Alpine Fire District responded to a call for help to the scene of a remote area rescue at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, according to Capt. Isaac Sanchez of Cal Fire.People who were with the man in distress performed CPR and a paramedic took over life-saving efforts upon arrival, Sanchez said.The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the captain said. (KGTV) — A shopping trip at a Goodwill store turned scary after the appearance of a phone somewhere it shouldn't be.The incident unfolded in late January on a Saturday afternoon at the store on Alpine Blvd. Amy says she was trying on some clothes in the dressing room. She tells us she looked down and saw a phone camera staring up at her. In a written statement, she says, "By the time I noticed, he quickly removed his phone ... As I opened the door, he walked away."By the time she put on her clothes and reported it to employees, he was gone. Detectives released a surveillance image of a man, identifying him as a person of interest.According to Amy, San Diego Sheriff deputies reviewed surveillance video and determined a man appeared to sneak his phone under the stall several times before he was finally noticed.Amy describes it as "a shock to me." She then felt even more “violated." Investigators say they do not know of any similar incidents at this or other local Goodwill stores.Taylor Herwehe is a frequent shopper at the Goodwill in Alpine. She plans to be a little more watchful and that upsets her."I should feel safe in a dressing room. I should have my mind on purchases and not on the perverts out there," said Herwehe.Deputies say the person of interest may be driving a silver or gray Honda. ALEXANDRIA, Ind. -- More than a dozen small dogs were rescued from one of the worst cases of animal hoarding officials in Madison County, Indiana say they have ever seen. Madison County Sheriff's deputies responded to a complaint about dogs barking at a home on Trenton Street in Alexandria on Saturday just after 2 p.m. Responding deputies said the smell from the home was so strong that it reached the driveway and the homeowner had to walk around feces to exit the home. Inside the home, deputies found 18 Shih-Tzu and Rat Terrier mixed dogs with severely matted and unkempt fur and fecal matter on the floors throughout the home. The dogs appeared to be well fed, according to deputies but were in need of intensive care. “When we’re called to help with a situation like this, and you can smell the urine from the driveway…you know it’s going to be really bad,” said Maleah Stringer, Director of the Animal Protection League, Inc. (APL), the city of Anderson’s animal shelter. “There has to be some point along the way that people have to realize they can’t handle caring for this many dogs, and they need help. Sadly, too many don’t make that call and the dogs end up paying the price.”Several of the dogs in the home were being kept inside a small bedroom that was covered in mold and feces. The smell of ammonia inside the home was so intense that two deputies had to be treated for exposure. The owner voluntarily surrendered all 18 dogs to the Animal Protection League of Madison County. According to the APL, one of the dogs was in such poor shape that it had to be euthanized.  “We are hopeful the remaining 17 dogs are eventually healthy enough to be adopted," said Stringer. "Right now, we’re looking at about 0 per dog just to get the basic veterinary care. Adopting a child from another country can take years. For some families, the pandemic added even more waiting time as countries shut down.However, as travel opens back up, agencies are finding ways to help families complete their adoptions, like the adoption of Maria Camila in Colombia.“For most of the summer, we were waiting for just word we were able to travel to Columbia. Just waiting for them to open up,” Seth Christensen said. Seth and Gwen Christensen live in the U.S. with their three children. They started the process of adopting another child years ago, and just this October, they were able to travel to Colombia and bring her home.“That was a stressful time but we made it. We made it to Columbia,” Gwen said.We interviewed Seth and Gwen back in May, right after they went to Colombia for two weeks in March to adopt Maria Camila. However, they had to return to the U.S. without her due to COVID-19 and government closures.“Everything was just going swimmingly until, sorry they shut down all the courts in the whole country,” they explained back in May. “We had to send her back to her group home and it was awful. But she was old enough, she kind of understood, we cried and she was like OK.”So they waited, talking with their adopted daughter over FaceTime all summer until October, when they were invited back into Colombia to complete the process.“It was a complete do over. All the fees, all the appeals, everything,” Gwen explained. “But we got through faster than some families did.”“There were so many parents going through the system at that point than is normal that everyone was just overwhelmed,” Seth said about their most recent experience in the country. Due to the delay time, many families took the first chance they could get to return and finish adoptions.Seth and Gwen spent a month in Colombia, finalizing documents to bring Maria Camila back to the U.S. It's a process Gwen said usually would take less than three weeks, but for them took two separate trips.“There has been a backlog on the travel piece,” said Hollen Frazier, President at All God's Children International. The agency facilitates adoptions from a number of countries, including the adoption of Maria Camila. While the process is slower right now due to countries catching up, quarantine periods and other processes, she said adopted kids from most countries are finally getting home.“In the last six months we’ve seen kids come home from Bulgaria, Haiti, Columbia,” she said. Except for those from China. “All of our families from China, they’re all still stuck. Completely stuck,” Frazier explained.Most countries are finding ways to complete the adoption process safely after many were put on hold all summer. “Because there were so many other families around it definitely helps to kind of see other people in the same situation,” Seth said.After a long wait, Maria Camila now lives in the U.S. with her new siblings. “They’ve been excited to meet her and play with her and introduce her to things,” Seth said.The 12-year-old 6th grader started school this month. “She just started online school this week and that’s an adventure,” Gwen said. 3159

After months of protests, sometimes becoming violent, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced Thursday that the city is banning the use of tear gas by his city’s police.Wheeler said everyone has an obligation to create change, and now is the time to change the city’s policy on using tear gas.“During the last hundred days Portland, Multnomah County and State Police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety,” Wheeler said. “We need something different. We need it now.“Arson, vandalism, and violence are not going to drive change in this community. I expect the police to arrest people who engage in criminal acts. I expect the District Attorney to prosecute those who commit criminal acts. And I expect the rest of the criminal justice system to hold those individuals accountable. We must stand together as a community against violence and for progress.”The issue of using tear gas amid protests has become a legal battle, as demonstrators say that the use of tear gas to disperse a crowd violates their constitutional rights. In June, U.S. District Judge March Hernandez ruled that the use of tear gas on protesters in Portland could only be used when lives are at risk.The police responded on Thursday by saying gas is a tool needed by officers to control crowds when protests become violent.“Banning the lawful use of CS will make it very difficult to address this kind of violence without resorting to much higher levels of physical force, with a correspondingly elevated risk of serious injury to members of the public and officers,” the Portland Police said in a statement. “CS, while effective, is a significantly lower level of force than impact weapons, which would very likely be necessary to disperse riotous groups with its prohibition. We do not want to use gas. We do not want to use any force.”As to why tear gas is used instead of police going in to make an arrest?“To make an arrest in the middle of a crowd intent on destruction and injuring people, it takes considerable resources--large numbers of officers that we do not have,” the police said. “Not only do we not have enough PPB officers to respond in this manner, our area partners have stated they will not come to our aid, given the climate in Portland.”The city’s downtown has dealt with protests and unrest since Memorial Day following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
