Baseball's Cleveland Indians are going to drop their nickname after 105 years, the New York Times first reported on Sunday. In July, the Indians stated they were reconsidering their nickname. Cleveland’s baseball club have been known as the Indians since 1915. For much of that time, the Indians logo was known as “Chief Wahoo,” but in recent years has been mostly phased out. The Indians wore the logo for the final time in 2018.Activists say that the Indians and Redskins nicknames promote ethnic stereotyping.The National Congress of American Indians has been opposed to nicknames such as the Indians and Redskins, as it wrote in a 2013 report.Before the 2020 NFL season, Washington's football team dropped the "Redskins" nickname, and has gone by the "Washington Football Team" moniker."The professional sports industry, specifically the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL) and the leagues’ team owners have failed to address the racist origins of deplorable race based marketing strategies of the past," the report read. What is true about many of the brand origin stories is that team owners during the birth of these brands hoped to gain financially from mocking Native identity. As a result, these businesses perpetuated racial and political inequity. BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah -- The Utah community is mourning the loss of one of its own, a U.S. Air Force pilot from the state who died during a routine training mission off the northern coast of England.1st Lt. Kenneth “Kage” Allen grew up in Box Elder County, but recently moved overseas where he was serving with the 48th Fighter Wing based in the U.K.He had been there for a little over three months when his plane crashed during the training mission.“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our airman and mourn with his family and his fellow reapers in the 493rd Fighter Squadron,” said Col. Will Marshall, Commander of the 48th Fighter Wing.Marshall said Allen was the assistant chief of weapons and tactics for the 493rd Fighter Squadron.On Monday morning, Allen was flying a F-15C Eagle at about 9:40 a.m. when the aircraft crashed into the North Sea.“The outpouring of love and respect from our communities has been a ray of light in this time of darkness,” said Marshall.Allen's death comes just one day after his 27th birthday, and just one week after he recorded himself singing “Time in a Bottle” for his new bride.“Oh my sweetheart Kage,” wrote Hannah Allen on Facebook. “I think I could fill an ocean with the tears I’ve cried today.”The couple were married on Feb. 20, right before Allen joined the 48th Fighter Wing.Family members wrote on Facebook that Lt. Allen was waiting for his wife to join him in England once COVID-19 restrictions allowed.“I never knew a heart could shatter like this,” Hannah wrote. “But I’ve promised you today that the rest of my life will be a tribute to you.”In a tweet, Gov. Britain imposed the ban Tuesday after the U.S. threatened to sever an intelligence-sharing arrangement because of concerns Huawei equipment could allow the Chinese government to infiltrate U.K. networks. BALTIMORE, Maryland — A man running away from the Baltimore Police died after being hit by a car last week.Officers were conducting a narcotics investigation in the 2700 block of Greenmount Avenue around 8:30 p.m. March 28. When they tried to talk to 21-year-old Larry Whitfield during the investigation, he immediately started to run away. Whitfield was able to escape officers and tried to cross Greenmount Avenue when he was hit by a car traveling southbound. He was transported to a hospital where he died Friday morning. The driver of the car was not injured and stayed on the scene after the crash. Detectives are working with the narcotics unit to evaluate all the evidence from the scene. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.  785

I want you to know exactly where we are with our discussions with the Big 3 leadership and protecting our members and their facilities during this international crisis.I announced this past Sunday that the International UAW had formed a COVID-19/Coronavirus task force with GM, Ford and FCA to implement enhanced protections for manufacturing and warehouse employees at all three companies.I want to be very transparent about what happened during our conversation Sunday with the Big 3. The UAW leadership, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations on how to protect ourselves and our communities, requested a two-week shutdown of operations to safeguard our members, our families and our communities. Your UAW leadership feels very strongly, and argued very strongly, that this is the most responsible course of action.The companies, however, were not willing to implement this request. They asked for 48 hours to put together plans to safeguard workers in their facilities. (Ford Motor Company has indicated this week that they are willing to rotate down shifts and are planning to shut down all European operations next week.)The 48-hour window is up this afternoon. We will be evaluating what the companies submit today and there will be a meeting this evening at 6 p.m., where the Task Force will review plans for the safety and health of all members, their families and our communities.I want to be very clear here: If the UAW leadership on the task force, myself and Vice Presidents Cindy Estrada, Terry Dittes and Gerald Kariem, are not satisfied that our members will be protected, we will take this conversation to the next level.These companies will be put on notice that the UAW will use any and all measures to protect our brothers and sisters who are working in their facilities.
