CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Popular South Bay brewery Novo Brazil is expanding its footprint in Chula Vista this month.Novo Brazil Brewery will hold a grand opening for its new brewpub on Dec. 11 in Otay Ranch Town Center.The 12,000-square-foot spot can host more than 950 guests and features a 300-seat restaurant, full bar, indoor and outdoor beer garden, two 14-foot-by-10-foot televisions, shuffleboard tables, and a kid's area with ping-pong tables, video games, and other activities.RELATED: Ballast Point purchased by Chicago-based brewerOn the production side, the brewpub boasts 60 taps with about 40 of those dispensing beer and the rest a combination of Novo's kombucha and hard seltzer creations. Canned cocktails are also in the works for the brewery. In addition to the restaurant and bar, the location will also house a five-barrel brewing system and fermentation tanks.“Our goal is to shift the axis of brewing tourism to southern San Diego attracting downtown and northern San Diego residents and tourists to experience our work and our community. With other local breweries we can put Chula Vista on the map as an official destination of the beer and gastronomic map,” said Tiago Carneiro, founder of Novo Brazil Brewery.Carneiro says they intend to brew more than 100 different beers using the massive system in their first year alone. The new brewery will allow Novo to brew specialty beers and test new recipes. The result is a black and white wave pattern across the building — inside and out— representative of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. The bar, which owners say is the longest in the South Bay, curls around the facility and guests can kick back in furniture made from Brazilian wood around unique murals from Brazilian artists.“Our story began in Brazil, where we learned the art of brewing and created the most awarded brewery in South America," Carneiro said. "We believe our difference is our Brazilian way of showing the colorful culture and happiness of four homelands. In the lot on Main Street and Fourth Avenue, visitors can buy anything from fish tacos and flowers to Mexican food and coffee.Just Coffee opened up about two weeks ago and owner Tyler Detweiler said he knew it was a bold move to start a new business in the middle of a pandemic, but it’s been successful so far.“People come here with the best moods. They’ve been making their own coffee for three months, four months now, and they want to go get a coffee that tastes like real coffee from a real espresso machine,” said Detweiler.He said another draw has been thanks to his business partner, the owner of Keto Dessert Company. James Baum usually delivers his sugar-free desserts to various locations in the Chula Vista area, so the partnership means one central place for locals to find his treats.Baum said his drive to sell keto dessert comes from his personal background.“They just thought I was a slow learner and then I got older and took this super long test of hundreds and hundreds of questions and realized I’m autistic,” said Baum.He said a sugar-free diet can benefit people with autism so he started the company as a way to bring dessert to keto diets. With the new spot, he’s also been able to meet members of the community and show them how successful a person with autism can be.“For me it’s a business, maybe it’s for you something else, but don’t quit. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Experts at the Living Coast Discovery Center are keeping a close watch on their animals after a student jumped into a shark enclosure on Tuesday. The video featured a Montgomery High School student climbing on rocks before jumping in the enclosure and swimming a lap. LCDC officials believe the student took part in the stunt on a dare. The boy was not in any danger from the sharks, which were primarily sharks that don't like to be spooked, experts said. "They don't like to be scared by all those quick motions and loud noises," said Elizabeth Argyle, the director of education and guest experience for the center. "You don't know the consequences that you're going to create, and for the animals, they get spooked by it." None of the animals were harmed. The center's care staff said their animals are doing well and a veterinarian performs check-ups weekly. The student’s actions took place weeks before the center is set to open a new display. The exhibit, called the "Sea of Change" will be about co-existing with and respecting animals, focusing on how humans can live with them harmoniously, said Argyle. "We're very deeply disappointed in the actions that some of these students chose to do," Argyle added. She hopes this incident will serve as a teachable moment for others. The Sweetwater Union High School District said the teen’s behavior was inappropriate. School officials are working with LCDC to prevent similar incidents from happening again and create an opportunity for appropriate restitution for the student. 1568

In some cases, they’ve traveled hundreds of miles to cast a ballot.Following the postmaster general’s controversial decision this summer to decommission nearly 700 mail-sorting machines across the country, Sarah Alana was worried about voting by mail.“We all have a choice and what's going on right now with the Postal Service is another matter entirely. Clearly, it's not working,” she said.In Georgia, where she has lived and voted since 2013, nearly a dozen mail-sorting machines were removed. Still, she applied for an absentee ballot.“It was sent out the same day,” said Alana. “Three weeks later, no absentee ballot. And I was getting just so mad.”Even more of a problem, she’s currently staying in Durango, Colorado, dealing with respiratory issues.“I'm here to see if the dry air is a little bit better for my breathing problems,” she said.In Georgia, more than 1.1 million absentee by mail ballots have been returned, trouncing the nearly 155,000 cast in 2016. But, another half million mail-in ballots have yet to be returned.Sarah Alana decided not to take any chances. Despite being high-risk for complications from COVID-19, she bought a 5 plane ticket and made the 1,600-mile journey from Durango to Atlanta to vote in person.“I went through three airports. I took two flights. I was in three Lyft rides, which actually, that was scary for me too.”Others have made similar trips, like a woman studying in Chicago who traveled to her home state of Texas to cast her ballot.The children of 94-year-old Mildred Madison children drove her 300 miles to Detroit to vote in person when her absentee ballot didn’t arrive at her temporary address.“Vote. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board voted Wednesday to cut more than 220 educators and place its beleaguered superintendent on paid leave.Staff cuts include educators and all librarians. In all, the board voted to eliminate 223 employees in hopes of balancing its budget.The board cited a decline in enrollment for the cuts, but said if enrollment goes up, librarians would be the first to return.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District votes to cut over 200 jobsThe vote ratifies an earlier referendum in which the board voted to lay off nearly 240 employees and staff members in February. The district's planned cuts to jobs and programs had been widely panned by staff and the public, with many calling on officials to consider salary cuts instead. During February's board meeting, one teacher told the board that their proposal would "kill this community and hurt our kids."Several staff were supposed have received pink slips in March but the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing campus shutdowns temporarily staved off layoffs.The board also voted 4-1 Wednesday night to place SUHSD superintendent Dr. Karen Janney on paid administrative leave. She earned her doctorate degree in education from San Diego State University in 2010, according to her professional online profile.
