SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego craft brewery hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic is taking the rare step of opening a restaurant, despite the region going into the state's most restrictive purple tier.Dennis O’Connor says the pandemic hurt Thorne Brewing Company the moment the first shut down kicked in back in March.“It wasn't so much that nobody was coming in, but you also lost all those bars and restaurants that were buying your product,” said O’Connor, who co-founded the brewery in 2012.Not to mention, the price of cans increased, hitting the craft brewer’s distribution.Thorne operates three locations in San Diego County, at least one of which will likely have to shut down as the region enters the most restrictive purple tier, outlawing indoor dining. The restrictions take effect midnight Saturday, to help stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. “We are nowhere near thriving,” O’Connor said. “It’s survival at best.”But O’Connor has a new tool for survival.Connected to Thorne’s Barrio Logan location is a new full service distillery and wood-fired pizza restaurant the brewery finished in march, but never opened. O’Connor says it was a multimillion-dollar project that took years.“It was pretty much just a big blank warehouse,” he said.While the interior can't open, Thorne is converting the restaurant’s outdoor patio into its own barbecue eatery, with a bar in the back called Sideyard Barbecue by Hot Mess (the name of the adjacent pizza restaurant) . It'll seat 84 people and opens to the public Nov. 19.“If outdoor is the new norm then let's do an outdoor and let’s kick (butt) on it,” O’Connor said. “Let's not put it in the street, let’s not put it in a barn tent, let's do something special. The city approved to lower rates and extend parking hours along Third Avenue and Cedar Street on Thursday. It's no secret downtown parking is tough. "Sometimes it’s just hard to find one," said Oday Yousif. "That’s the problem. It’s never guaranteed."For students at Cal Western Law School, it's not any easier. "8 o'clock in the morning, that’s when the meters start running. That’s when most classes start; they’re already full," said Yousif. There are 26 metered spots on Third Avenue and Cedar Street right next to the school. "My bank statement is just filed 'City of San Diego parking'. .25 an hour for a max of two hours. So, after those two hours, you have to move your car or you’ll get a ticket," said Yousif.He got three tickets in one year. "They’re about 60 to 70 dollars, and then there’s a fee. I've appealed every single one I've got."Yousif wrote an email to the city to try to fix the situation. He worked on a resolution with the Downtown Parking Management Group for ten months. They proposed lowering the rate to 50 cents per hour for up to four hours of parking. "Giving us 50 cents an hour is not only beneficial to help students, but doing it at four hours is the perfect combination to help students who are just trying to have an ideal parking scenario," said Yousif. That proposal was approved unanimously by the City Transportation Engineering Division on Thursday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A homeless man was attacked with a skateboard while sleeping in North Park Saturday, San Diego Police said.The man was asleep in the south alley of El Cajon Blvd. at 28th St. when a man hit him repeatedly with a skateboard, said officers.The victim suffered serious head trauma and was taken to the hospital.Police said the attacker is white, about six feet tall, and between 19 and 26 years old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A red flag warning has been issued for a large swath of San Diego County amid windy, dry conditions. The warning lasts through 6 p.m., Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Winds will pick up throughout the day Sunday along coastal mountain slopes and through valley corridors below passes and canyons. Strong winds are also expected over the Inland Empire below the Cajon Pass.
