VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- After a trip to visit their grandma in Ohio, eight year old Lilly and 12 year old Zachary were driving back to California with their mom and grandma when a wrong-way driver hit their car head-on in Oklahoma, killing all four of them. The wrong-way driver, identified by Oklahoma authorities as 33-year-old Ashley Louise Ricks, survived the crash.Monday, Oklahoma authorities gave an update, saying witnesses smelled alcohol at the scene of the crash. Witnesses and 911 calls also reveal the woman was driving at a high rate of speed and in the wrong direction for at least nine miles before the fatal crash occurred. Authorities said they’re currently investigating her medical history, driver history and taking blood samples before making any charges. The family was driving back to Vista, near San Diego, so Lilly could make it back home in time for school to resume. A GoFundMe created by a family friend shows the kids called their dad and stepmom every day while on vacation, telling them about the fun they’d had on their trip.Sam Homant, the kids’ dad, and their stepmom Melissa Starnes said the last time they talked to their son, it was the night of the crash.“He was excited to come home. We had just got him a brand new bed, a brand new bed that he was just so excited for, this pillow top mattress and he was so excited. And that was the last thing that we said to him,” said Starnes. They described the kids as family oriented and special. Zachary had a creative and kind heart.“He could take Legos and create anything out of Legos. He loved to build, just a smart smart little boy. Very creative. Wanted to be an architect. His imagination was off the rack,” they said.Lilly had similar passions to many little girls her age, but also loved to ride her dad’s motorcycle with him.“She loved makeup and dancing and her dolls. She loved to draw,” they said. The GoFundMe will help pay to bring the kids home. As they grieve, these parents want answers.“They had such a bright future and it’s been taken away by this lady and we don’t know why. We want to know why was she on that road on the wrong side,” said Starnes. 2159

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Vista family is crediting their 3-year-old French Bulldog with thwarting a burglar at the front door. Last Thursday, just past noon and eight minutes after Samantha Sanchez left her home on Olive Drive, she got an alert of noise near her door. When she got home, she saw her front door, busted and wide open."Felt violated. Disturbing," said Sanchez.A motion activated camera she had just installed to monitor her dog Harley - who suffers from epilepsy and is prone to frequent seizures - had captured part of what happened. On the video, the sounds of something being jammed into the door can be heard. Harley then starts to growl. The video stops and then skips 12 seconds. In the next images, Harley is seen sitting, staring at an open door. Sanchez believes the intruder never got inside because of her 30 lb. Frenchie."Thank God for Harley," said Sanchez. When it comes to Frenchies, there are snorter and non-snorters. Harley is definitely the former."You can see how he would be mistaken for a bigger, more aggressive dog just by how loud he is," said Sanchez.Sanchez cant help but smile when she thinks about what greeted the burglar at the door."Harley is my hero. He saved us," said Sanchez. His actions unfolded even though he may have needed the saving. A fresh urine stain that day meant he likely had a seizure during or after the break-in. But this hero wouldn't be stopped. "Harley got a new bed. Harley got a new toy and sausages. Harley gets whatever he wants now," said Sanchez.Sanchez says Harley will remain on alert. There have been two other burglaries in the same neighborhood in the past week. 1650

WASHINGTON — The government’s cybersecurity agency is expressing increased alarm about a hack of computer systems in the U.S. and around the globe that officials suspect was carried out by Russia. The cybersecurity unit of the Department of Homeland Security says the hack “poses a grave risk” to the U.S. government and state and local governments as well as critical infrastructure and private business. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced the SolarWinds Orion vulnerability that was disclosed this week as the compromised piece of software, was not the only way that hackers were able to get into government agencies, private companies and critical infrastructures over the last several months."CISA has determined that this threat poses a grave risk to the Federal Government and state, local, tribal, and territorial governments as well as critical infrastructure entities and other private sector organizations," the alert issued by the agency said. "CISA expects that removing this threat actor from compromised environments will be highly complex and challenging for organizations."The U.S. Energy Department is the latest government unit to announce they had systems compromised in the hack. The department says the impact of the hack appears to be “isolated to business networks” and "has not impacted the mission essential national security functions of the Department, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)," which manages the country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons. It’s not just government agencies, Microsoft is reporting in a blog post more than 40 customers around the world appear to have been targeted in the hack. The hack creates a fresh foreign policy problem for President Donald Trump in his final days in office.President Trump has not made public comments regarding the hack, or the government’s response to Russia or whoever may be responsible. A White House senior official told CNN Trump was briefed on the hack by his top intelligence officials on Thursday.President-elect Joe Biden has also received briefings on the hack and released a statement."Our adversaries should know that, as President, I will not stand idly by in the face of cyber assaults on our nation," Biden said, making no specific mention of Trump or his administration, but also not naming Russia as the culprit.President-elect Joe Biden says his new administration “will make dealing with this breach a top priority from the moment we take office.” 2502

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Jury selection is expected to take all week in the trial of former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II. The San Diego football star and son of Chargers Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Senior pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped two homeless women in Encinitas last year. He's also charged with raping an unconscious seventeen-year-old girl back when Winslow was nineteen. Prosecutors say he was out of custody on million bail in connection with the felony case when he got in trouble again. Prosecutors say he fondled himself in front of a 77- year-old woman at a Carlsbad gym, asked her if she liked it, and groped her while she was in a hot tub at the same gym.Jan Ronis is a San Diego defense attorney not affiliated with the case, but watching it closely. "From what I've seen at the preliminary examination, everyone that testified seemed to have a lot of credibility. These were older women, you would extend the greatest credibility to that kind of witness," said Ronis. Winslow played ten seasons with the NFL. His defense team is reportedly planning to call two psychiatrists to testify. It's unclear if CTE, or Chronic traumatic encephalopathy will play a role in that defense. Ronis says it might not make a difference. "You can still be responsible for your conduct , criminally responsible, after having sustained a traumatic brain injury or something of that nature. It's different than say, your mental health issue was such that rendered you incapable of understanding the nature of your conduct that you couldn't understand the difference between right and wrong, " said Ronis. Opening statements are expected to begin May 20. Winslow faces life in prison if convicted on all counts. City News Service contributed to this report. 1787

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A dog owner has a warning for other pet owners after her 5-year-old English Bulldog died during a dental cleaning at a Vista pet hospital."I just thought it was a routine visit," said Kristine Ortiz.Ortiz's nightmare began two Tuesdays ago at Banfield Pet Hospital in Vista, after she brought Chesty in for a dental cleaning. Chesty is her emotional support dog. Ortiz, a medically retired Marine, lives with a rare and debilitating bone disease. Ortiz got the call just before 3 in the afternoon."Just in shock. Kept thinking this is not my dog. Has to be a different dog," said a tearful Ortiz. RELATED: Dog dies after suffering burns during surgeryIt wasn't. She was told Chesty was dead."I was upset. I remember screaming ... I've had surgery six times since I got my dog, and she's been with me the whole time, so it was very emotional," said Ortiz. Ortiz demanded an explanation."They told us he had an adverse reaction to the medicine and everything they were administering," said Ortiz. That didn't make sense to Ortiz. Chesty, a healthy dog, had been put under during two previous cleanings and never had any issues. She hired her own expert to conduct a necropsy and received a report, which concluded it was not an adverse reaction that killed Chesty, but a slow suffocation.RELATED: Beloved family dog attacked and killed at Santee dog park"The report says over a period of six hours, slowly his throat was closing," said Ortiz.Chesty's death is not the only one when it comes to Banfield and dental cleanings. An internet search shows complaints of deadly dental cases across the country. Ortiz is considering legal action to force changes in policy."Him going out like that, no animal should experience that ... It makes me scared for other people," said Ortiz.A spokesperson for Banfield Pet Hospital issued the following statement: 1878
