American tourist Kimberly Sue Endicott and her tour guide, who were abducted in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park on Tuesday, have been rescued by security forces, a Ugandan government spokesperson said Sunday."Both were rescued from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are safely back in Kanungu district in Uganda," said Ofwono Opondo. "They are back at the lodge and she is expected to be in Kampala tomorrow."Opondo said the kidnappers fled the scene of the rescue when law enforcement officers and soldiers moved in.Ugandan police had said Thursday that an armed gang kidnapped Endicott and her driver at gunpoint from the national park and had made frequent demands for a 0,000 ransom. Police had said they would not offer the money.A ransom was paid by touring company Wild Frontiers to free Endicott and her tour guide, a source with knowledge of the exchange told CNN on Sunday. The handover was "quiet and peaceful," the source said.A spokesperson with Wild Frontiers Uganda, the company Endicott toured with, said neither Endicott nor her tour guide were harmed. The spokesperson said the identities of the alleged kidnappers have not been revealed. The two were abducted at gunpoint while on a game drive on Tuesday evening, the Ugandan Tourism Board and Ugandan police said in a statement.Four other people were taken at the same time, but they were freed while Endicott and her driver were taken from the park, officials said. 1464

A school district in Illinois is drawing a mix of praise and criticism after expressing support for schools in the district that are "moving away from Halloween celebrations.""While we recognize that Halloween is a fun tradition for many, it is not a holiday that is celebrated by everyone for various reasons and we want to honor that," 350

Across the country, more states are legalizing marijuana. Now, more people are opening up about getting high and getting behind the wheel.“I feel more focused than when I’m sober,” Caleb Occelin said of driving while under the influence of marijuana. “It eases my mind. It makes me focus on everything.”Others, however, say they know better than to mix cars and cannabis. “Do not smoke weed and drive,” said marijuana smoker Sam Lee. “We all know we can barely think straight instead of drive.”Now, a team of medical professionals is studying the dangers of smoking and driving.“There’s been increasing concern about the potential of public health impacts of people using cannabis while they drive or shortly after,” said Dr. Michael Kosnett of the University of Colorado Denver.Kosnett is teaming up with Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety on a study about the effects of cannabis while operating a motor vehicle. This study tests three focus groups: daily smokers, occasional smokers and non-smokers as they go through tests measuring reaction times, hand-eye coordination and short-term memory.More than a year into the study, the team has hit an unexpected road block: they can’t seem to find occasional smokers.“As for people who just used it occasionally, like on a weekly basis, that was probably less than one-fourth of the people,” Kosnett said. This study is still in process. Kosnett has not yet released the findings.Denver Police Sgt. Alan Ma, however, doesn’t need to know the results. He says he knows from working his nightly beat that driving high is dangerous.“Their perception and reaction times are delayed,” Ma said about people who drive while high on marijuana. The Denver Police Department wrote 63 citations in both 2016 and 2017 for marijuana-related DUIs. 1794

A new study shows that women who take birth control pills are less likely to develop the most aggressive types of ovarian cancer. "Among those who used the birth control pills, there were 46 percent lower odds of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer that resulted in death within 12 months of the diagnosis," Jennifer Mongiovi, a PhD student at the University at Buffalo and one of the authors of the study, said. The research also found over a five year period birth control pills reduced the likelihood fatal ovarian cancer by 32 percent. "By taking birth control pills, you can stop as much damage being done to your ovaries from your ovulation, and essentially lower your risk of future damage, such as cancer," Mongiovi said. However, researchers said that before you go out and buy birth control pills, you should consult with your doctor about your medical history and what is appropriate given your circumstances."With anything there are trade offs on both sides. Birth control is a hormone so you are potentially putting yourself at a greater risk of breast cancer. So that's something you definitely need to review your medical history. What essentially is the biggest risk to you," Mongiovi said. The research was conducted at Roswell Park. 1259

Alan Turing, a crack code-breaker and visionary mathematician who was convicted under Victorian-era homophobic laws, will be the face of Britain's new £50 note.Bank of England Governor Mark Carney announced Monday that Turing, who killed himself in 1954 after he was subjected to chemical castration, will appear on the new polymer note by the end of 2021.In a statement, Carney lauded the Englishman as an "outstanding mathematician" and "a giant on whose shoulders so many now stand.""As the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as war hero, Alan Turing's contributions were far ranging and path breaking," the central banker said.Turing is best known for his work at Bletchley Park, where UK cryptologists sought to decipher messages sent by the Nazis. His efforts to crack Germany's Enigma code were the subject of the 2014 film "The Imitation Game."He also played a pivotal role in developing computers, and early thinking about artificial intelligence. In 1937, he published a paper introducing an idea that came to be known as the Turing machine, which is considered to have formed the basis of modern computing. This was a hypothetical device that could come up with a solution to any problem that is computable. The note's design reflects Turing's work. It features a ticker tape of binary code that spells out his birthday (June 23, 1912), and depicts the "British Bombe" machine that helped break the Enigma code.It also includes a quote Turing gave to The Times newspaper in 1949: "This is only a foretaste of what is to come, and only the shadow of what is going to be."Supporters have long campaigned for Turing to receive greater recognition for his work and official acknowledgment that his conviction for homosexual activity was wrong. Two years after choosing castration to avoid a custodial sentence, he ended his life at the age of 41 by eating an apple laced with cyanide.Sex between men over the age of 21 was decriminalized in England and Wales in 1967. However the law was not changed in Scotland until 1980 and in Northern Ireland until 1982.British Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologized for Turing's treatment by the justice system in the 1950s after thousands of people signed a petition in 2009.He received a royal pardon in 2014. 2295
