ASHGABAT, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov agreed here Sunday to continually advance bilateral cooperation in an all-round and sustainable way.     The Chinese president, who arrived here earlier in the day for a working visit, held talks with Berdymukhamedov in Ashgabat, capital of this Central Asia nation in the afternoon.     Hu said the Chinese and Turkmen economies are highly complementary to each other, and bilateral cooperation in all dimensions and various fields accords with the needs of economic development of both countries.     Hu outlined four areas that the two countries should focus on to advance practical cooperation. Hu said the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline is a cooperative project that benefits the two countries and the whole region.     China is ready to work with Turkmenistan to secure smooth operation of the gas pipeline, and further advance bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector in line with the principle of equal consultation and mutual benefit, Hu said.     Thirdly, the two countries should also strengthen cooperation in non-energy fields. Hu said China is ready to expand cooperation with Turkmenistan in transport, telecommunications, building materials and infrastructure development. He proposed that the two countries should study and draft a plan of middle- and long-term cooperation in non-energy fields.     Fourthly, the two countries should earnestly implement the credit projects they agreed upon by accelerating the inauguration of relevant projects.     After the talks, Hu and Berdymukhamedov attended the signing ceremony of a number of cooperation documents in trade, investment, and telecommunications. Hu also expressed China's readiness to provide assistance to Turkmenistan on Chinese language learning.     Hu said since the two countries established diplomatic links 17years ago, the two sides have maintained a high level of mutual trust and firmly supported each other on major issues concerning each other's core interests. He noted that the two countries have carried out vigorous cooperation in trade, energy and culture.     Hu said China has always placed importance on its relations with Turkmenistan, regarding it as a reliable friend and major partner. He said strengthening practical cooperation in all areas is in the common interests of both countries and peoples.     Hu said China is ready to work with Turkmenistan for the all-round, in-depth and rapid development of their bilateral ties.     Berdymukhamedov fully agreed with Hu's proposals for developing bilateral ties, saying Hu's visit is of special significance. He said Turkmenistan attaches great importance to China and its relations with China.     The long-term strategic partnership between the two countries is based on a high degree of mutual trust, mutual respect and friendship. FUZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) will hold talks in Taiwan's Taichung on Dec. 22, according to Thursday's preparatory meeting.     The two organizations are authorized by authorities in the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait issues.     According to a preliminary agreement, ARATS President Chen Yunlin and SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung will meet for the fourth round of talks since they resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.     Zheng Lizhong, standing vice president of the ARATS, and Kao Kung-lian, vice chairman and secretary general of the SEF, decided the ARATS delegation would visit the island between Dec. 21 and 25.     The agenda was agreed on during the preparatory meeting in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait.     The agenda includes discussion of labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in the fields of inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication, avoidance of double taxation and boosting taxation cooperation.     The two organizations are scheduled to hold a symposium on Dec.23 to introduce the mainland investment to the island.     The ARATS delegation will also tour the Taichung City, the surrounding area and the Sun Moon Lake, and leave the island at noon of Dec. 25.     Zheng said talks between the ARATS and the SEF, which negotiate issues deeply concerned by people of both sides, were "remarkable symbolization of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."     He said it shows the two organizations respect each other and "treat each other as equals" in promoting cross-Strait economic cooperation and improving people's livelihood.     The talks were supported and welcomed by people from both sides, Zheng said, adding the upcoming fourth round of talks would take into consideration the desire of people on both sides and the development of cross-Strait relations.     The two sides also discussed the use of relief funds donated by the mainland to Taiwan to combat Typhoon Morakot in August.     The ARATS received 450 million yuan of relief funds and has already delivered one third of it to the SEF. The rest would be sent to the SEF next week, it said.     Both sides agreed that the funds would be used in rebuilding the island's damaged bridges, schools and public facilities.

SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping put forward a four-point plan to cement China-South Korea ties when he met South Korean Prime Minister Chung Un Chan here on Thursday.     Xi said China and the South Korea were neighbors and the relationship had been promoted since they established diplomatic ties in 1992. The exchanges of the visits by the two heads of states last year upgraded the relations to strategic and cooperative partnership, which benefited both countries and helped promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.     Xi's proposal to foster the Sino-ROK relationship was:     -- To enhance high-level contact and political trust:     The two countries should also increase exchanges between the governments, parliaments and parties. BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese household electric appliance producer, announced Thursday evening that its net profit in the third quarter rose 48.88 percent year on year to 300.7 million yuan (44.03 million U.S. dollars).     Its net profit in the first three quarters increased 28.7 percent from a year earlier to 966.4 million yuan, the firm said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.     The eastern Shandong Province-based company attributed the net profit hike to reduced inventory and improved assets quality.     Equities of the Shanghai-listed firm added 1.28 percent to 18.17 yuan per share Thursday.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- European fashion retailers are accelerating business expansion in China thanks to the nation's increasing number of fashion-conscious consumers.     Two companies that opened new outlets in China at a rapid pace this year included Sweden's H&M and Spain's Zara, both retailers of clothing and accessories for adults and youth.     H&M is ending this year with a total of 13 new stores, raising the company portfolio in China to 27 outlets, while Zara, opened 33 new stores in China, winding down the year with 60 in total.     "In China, new store openings have more than doubled due to strong domestic consumption, which has not been affected by the global financial downturn," said Wu Shuang, public relations manager of H&M China. Globally, H&M store openings are up between 10 percent and 15 percent in 2009, said Wu.     "More H&M stores will be set up in China next year, especially in the second-tier cities," he said.     H&M, Europe's second largest fast-fashion retailer, entered the Hong Kong and Shanghai markets in 2007 and later expanded its business to second-tier cities like Hangzhou and Ningbo of Zhejiang province.     Back in August, H&M sales in Spain, the US and France were down 11 percent over July sales, the fourth consecutive monthly drop.     In 2008, average sales revenue at H&M stores in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong was up 23 percent to 59 million yuan, while globally average store sales was 48 million yuan.     "We are expecting favorable sales volume in China this year," said Wu, while declining to elaborate further.     Strong sales numbers were also recorded at Zara, the leading fast-fashion retailer in Europe. "The Chinese market is attractive with its soaring consumer spending power," a Zara promotion executive said on condition of anonymity. Chinese consumers can expect to see more Zara 'fast fashion' stores in the future," he said.     Fast fashion is a term used to describe fashion trends that are manufactured quickly in smaller batches to keep inventories down and allow mainstream consumers to take advantage of current clothing styles at lower prices. This type of quick manufacturing methodology is preferred by large retailers like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara, according to online apparel industry directory, Apparel Search.     This access to the latest clothing styles is popular with white-collar consumers in China.     "I have been waiting for 30 minutes to try on several pieces of clothing, but the wait doesn't matter. I love to get everything here, and the prices are acceptable," said Liu Dan, a woman in her 20s shopping at one of Zara's Beijing stores. Liu, who works in the public relations department at an international company, said she is also a regular patron of H&M in Beijing.
