PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — For a summer treat, it doesn’t get much cooler than -320 degrees. That’s how cold liquid nitrogen is when it transforms cereal into "Dragon’s Breath."“The vapor coming out of your mouth is a nice effect," said Ron Daranty, who owns Subzero Nitrogen Ice Cream in Parkland. However, a mom in St. Augustine is warning parents of children with asthma about the fad food after her son experienced health issues from eating Dragon's Breath.“We’ve sold thousands of them since January and we never had any issue," Daranty said.Subzero employees in Parkland have always warned people to be careful with the very cold cup and avoid drinking any excess liquid nitrogen, Daranty said. But now they've added on a new disclaimer."Even though that lady was sharing the article for others that may have respiratory challenges, I thought it was great and we added it to our sign of caution. We also started making people aware of it," he said. The risk of ingesting liquid nitrogen is purely scientific. Chris Pait, of the South Florida Science Center in Palm Beach County, said the extremely cold temperature can give people frostbite in their mouth or lungs."It can evaporate away in your mouth, but if you breathe that cold air in, there’s a chance that it’s cold enough to freeze the water that’s in your lungs," Pait said. "Your lungs are a mucous membrane. They need to be moist to work the way they should, so if you freeze your lungs obviously that isn’t a good thing. That’s going to cause problems. It’s almost like frostbite internally rather than externally."That’s why the science center shows off the power of liquid nitrogen in a controlled demonstration where professionals use gloves and goggles while handling liquid nitrogen. They show children how it can freeze a balloon, send a plug flying off a beaker, and, of course, make ice cream. But they serve that ice cream in a way that's safe. “When we do ice cream, the nitrogen is just there to freeze the liquid into the more solid form so by the time they eat it, the nitrogen is gone, it’s evaporated away," Pait said.Daranty said employees are specially trained on how to handle liquid nitrogen. People who don't want to try Dragon's Breath can still enjoy regular ice cream Subzero makes using liquid nitrogen."We’re pretty cautious about it. We understand the risks with it. Corporate has standard operating procedures and we’re pretty cautious. Everyone here knows how to handle the nitrogen. 2503

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Two sets of sisters graduated Marine Corps recruit training together, further strengthening their bonds. The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island, South Carolina, says one set includes Virginia sisters Ashley and Amber Valentine, while the other is comprised of Maria, Vanessa and Melissa Placido Jaramillo, who grew up in Nevada.According to MCRD, the Valentine sisters joined shortly after their grandfather passed away and wanted to carry on his legacy in the U.S. armed services.Ashley, 19, and Amber, 22, say having each other to rely on through training helped during some of their highest highs and lowest lows.“I went through a moment during first phase where I received some bad news in a letter, and she was there to be a shoulder for me to lean on,” Amber said in a press release posted to MCRD’s Facebook page. However, the Valentines won’t be attending combat training together, because Ashley suffered a hip fracture prior to graduation and must heal. After combat training, Amber plans to serve in the communications field and Ashley will be certified as a motor transportation operator. As for the Placido Jaramillo family, Maria, Vanessa and Melissa made a pact to join the military together when they were young children, according to MCRD. Melissa and Vanessa, both 22, are identical twins. Maria is a year younger than them at age 21.During recruit training, Melissa says the sisters succeeded thanks to friendly competition and daily positive affirmation.MCRD says the three sisters have yet to find out what military occupational specialty they will be assigned but are looking forward to what the Marine Corps has in store for them. All three plan to complete their education, though. 1748

PHOENIX, AZ — An Arizona family is searching for a U.S. Marine who left for Camp Pendleton on Monday but never arrived at the base.Lance Cpl. Job Wallace, 20, was last seen leaving a friend's house in Surprise, Arizona, between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Monday, his mother, Stacy Wallace, said. He loves the Marines, was recently promoted and was excited to get back to Pendleton after a three-day leave that took him home to the suburbs west of Phoenix and a camping trip. "He got into several colleges and missed scholarship opportunities just so that he could be a Marine, because he felt it was his duty to serve his country," Wallace said. Wallace said law enforcement officials told her that her son's phone was last pinged Monday night in Arizona. But a Border Patrol camera spotted his truck the next morning traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 near Fort Hancock, Texas, southeast of El Paso. A Surprise police spokesman says officers took a report and have turned the matter over to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. "NCIS and our partners are working diligently to locate Lance Cpl. Wallace and bring him home safely," Kurt Thomas, special agent in charge of the NCIS Marine Corps West Field Office, said in a statement. He urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the NCIS or local law enforcement. Wallace is 6'3" tall, about 205 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He was driving a 2004 silver Ford Explorer Sport Trac pickup with Arizona license plate CRF9682. "Please be on the lookout," Stacy Wallace pleaded. "Every eye matters, every share, every vehicle check, ever person matters in looking for him." 1649

People of color and allies are participating in Blackout Day on Tuesday to support the African American community and Black-owned businesses.Blackout Day is an economic protest organized by The Blackout Coalition. Participants are asked not to spend any money on July 7, but if they must spend, they’re asked to do so only at Black-owned businesses. The coalition says the movement is exclusively targeted at empowering and uplifting Black people, but it welcomes all people of color to stand in solidarity with them. The organization says it also welcomes allies who choose to participate in the protest, but leaders say they “make absolutely no apology for the fact this movement is FOR US & BY US.”The goal of the protest is to highlight the buying power of African Americans. In 2018, Black buying power reached .3 trillion, up from 0 billion in 1990, according to Nielsen.“This is only the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of economic empowerment as a reality for ALL BLACK PEOPLE,” the organization wrote on its “about” page. “United, we are an unstoppable force. We are a nation of people within this nation that at any time can demand our liberation by withholding our dollars. If we can do it for a day, we can do it for a week, a month, a quarter, a year…and one day we will look up and it will be a way of life.”The protest comes in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality following the death of multiple Black people, most notably George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. Demonstrators are calling for racial justice and to close America’s racial wealth gap.The nation’s largest Black-owned bank, OneUnited Bank, said in a statement that it supports Blackout Day 2020."As the largest Black owned bank in America, we're compelled to play a leadership role to galvanize our community and allies in support of #BlackOutDay2020 and to fight for social justice," said Kevin Cohee, CEO of OneUnited Bank. "We need to use our power – both our spending power, our vote and our voice – to demand criminal justice reform and to address income inequality." 2093

PIERCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Getting cited by the police doesn't always have to be a bad thing in Pierce Township. Police Chief Jeff Bachman said his men have added a new type of ticket to their arsenal: A yellow slip recognizing the actions of residents who take time to do the right thing for others."You'll get a call from maybe a disabled motorist, someone with a flat tire, and you pull up and someone is already changing that tire," Bachman said. Those are the people honored by the new golden tickets, each of which comes with a Walmart gift card. Bachman said he hoped the initiative would inject some happiness into his community and help people connect with police in a positive way."We see a lot of negativity on the news, in our job, but why not accent the positive?" he said. "People do good things."Twenty-one-year-old Sadie LaRoque and 20-year-old Matthew Murphy were the latest golden ticket recipients this week."We were sitting in the parking lot of the movie theater after our movie got out, and we saw some teenagers acting suspicious -- leaning up against somebody's car, touching it," LaRoque said. These witnesses turned investigators wanted to do the right thing, so they approached the teenagers and jotted down their license plate information, which went a long way for police. "We have great residents," Officer Philip Gammon said. "If we get a chance to recognize the good things that they're doing, I think we should take the opportunity to do that." 1506
