SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say their recruitment numbers are up, in part due to their innovative recruitment strategies.In a presentation at the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, data showed they've hired more people in 2018 compared to 2017 and 2016. "We had 63 candidates that applied for there and are in the academy, that was the largest, highest number academy we've had in 25+ years," Lt. Steve Waldheim, with SDPD's Backgrounds and Recruiting Unit said.So far this year, the department's hired 94 total officers, 15% are women.Here's the breakdown:2016: 3,229 took written exam, 137 hired2017: 3,184 took written exam, 126 hired2018: 2690 took written exam, 198 hiredWaldheim said their recruitment officers are doing a better job selecting applicants and preparing them for the hiring process, creating a lower drop off rate."The more officers we put on the street, the safer it is for the community, the faster response times we have," Waldheim said they need to fill 175 vacant positions, and to do so, they've gotten creative.Those innovative ways include everything from going to schools, military bases, Comic Con, working with the Padres to advertise and getting on social media."One of the biggest challenges is our unemployment rate," he said. San Diego County's unemployment rate remains low, hovering around 3% providing a limited pool to pull from.Once sworn in, Waldheim said there's multiple career options within the department, "helicopter, you can ride on a boat with our beach team, we have canines, motorcycles, we have detectives, investigations."He said the city's worked to increase their pay, to become competitive with other law enforcement agencies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six people were arrested after more than a dozen people knocked down barricades outside San Diego Police Department's headquarters.San Diego Police say a group of 20 people arrived at the Broadway headquarters and began knocking down police barricades on Saturday.Police said six people were arrested for assaulting and resisting officers.One officer was taken to a nearby hospital for a knee injury. 427

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say they have arrested a 23-year-old man in a fatal shooting in the East Village this week.Tyler Cosby of San Diego was arrested on Thursday for the murder of a 37-year-old man shot to death outside a downtown parking garage on Tuesday, according to SDPD.The victim, a 37-year-old white male who has yet to be publicly identified by police, was found in the area of 14th and G streets shortly after 10 p.m. Officers responding to several reports of gunshots arrived to find the man lying on the sidewalk at `1400 G St., near a parking garage entrance.The victim had at least one gunshot wound, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several men tried to scale the border fence at Border Field State Park Thursday evening.Video shows the men sitting on top of the wall attempting to get over. Border Patrol responded and agents were able to break up the crowd on the Mexico side of the border. Following the incident, the agency said it is willing to add agents in the area as needed. According to Border Patrol officials, about 167 arrests are made per day at the San Diego sector of the border. VIDEO: Migrants climb over border fence at Border Field State ParkEarlier in the week, dozens of migrants were caught on video climbing over the same section of the border fence. During that incident, several people successfully made it over the fence and onto the beach on the U.S. side of the border before being apprehended by agents. A total of 24 people, 18 men and six women, were taken into custody. According to Border Patrol, 23 of the people who crossed the border illegally were from Honduras while the 24th person was from Guatemala. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Steeped in tradition, Native American powwows celebrate life, renewing old friendships and creating new ones. With more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States, San Diego powwows help keep those traditions alive."We all try to come together and share the culture, do the best we can to teach our children. I was born and raised on the reservation, but my kids were not, so it's hard to instill the same teachings that I was brought up with," said Emerald Arnold, born and raised on the Navajo reservation.Children and adults dressed in colorful regalia for the powwow, which was held Saturday at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center in Old Town. We can have our rights restored, our heritage recognized."Native American veterans were honored at the powwow, including 102-year-old Joe Renteria, a World War II Navy veteran."It brings different people here, and it's just like a family reunion, that's what it amounts to."While each tribe has its own teachings, culture, and traditions, they come together as one at the powwow.
