SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Border Patrol agent was sentenced Wednesday for trying to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border while on duty in 2016.Noe Lopez, 37, of Chula Vista, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and cocaine in exchange for cash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 10-year-old boy who allegedly fired two rounds from a shotgun at San Diego Police officers after barricading himself in a Southcrest backyard shed is in custody, police say.Family members at the home in the 4000 block of Boston Ave., about a block north of Caesar Chavez Elementary School, called police at about 9 a.m. after the 10-year-old armed himself with a knife and hammer.When police arrived, the child ran and hid in a shed with a shotgun, SDPD said. The child fired two rounds at officers, according to police, but no one was injured.The 10-year-old barricaded himself for nearly two hours, before surrendering to police peacefully.SDPD said the child will be taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.The shotgun was recovered at the scene, police said, and investigators plan to look into how the child came into possession of the weapon.10News is monitoring this breaking news story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A chlorine spill that prompted evacuations in University City was contained Monday evening. 30 gallons of chlorine spilled in the pump room of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center's Friedenburg Pool about 3:30 p.m. on Executive Drive at Regents Road, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Just after 4 p.m., the department said about 40 children were sheltered in place while crews developed a plan to mitigate the situation. The location is near corporate offices and housing, including UC San Diego's Mesa Residential Apartments.No injuries were reported.Chlorine spill contained to 30 gallons at the JCC pool. No injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 91-year-old woman died and a younger woman was injured in a crash in Clairemont Friday. The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of Balboa Avenue, near Mt. Alifan Drive, authorities said.The older woman was driving south on Mt. Alifan in a gray Toyota Camry. Police said the Camry and a car driven by a 32-year-old woman collided in the intersection of Balboa Ave.Wreckage was strewn across the Auto Zone parking lot at 6085 Balboa Ave.The 91-year-old woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene. The younger woman suffered minor scrapes and bruises, police said.The cause of the collision is unknown. Police said it was possible a car may have run a red light, leading to the crash.Balboa Avenue is closed in both directions from the 6000 block (Mt. Alifan Dr.) to 6600 block (Mt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver was arrested after Border Patrol agents discovered nearly million in cash hidden in his SUV’s gas tank.On Aug. 5, at around 10:30 a.m., Border Patrol officials said agents spotted a suspicious Volkswagen Touareg on southbound Interstate 15 in Escondido and pulled the vehicle over.After a K-9 alerted agents to something in the SUV, agents questioned the 26-year-old driver. During a search of the vehicle, agents found 65 plastic-wrapped bundles of cash in the gas tank.According to officials, there was 7,460 in cash stuffed in the tank.The driver, a Mexican national, was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security “with pending criminal proceedings,” officials said.Agents seized the cash and SUV.In a news release, Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said, “The U.S. Border Patrol works tirelessly to protect the Homeland from transnational criminal organizations - the same criminal enterprises that poison our communities with narcotics and smuggle human beings like cargo.
