CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Eastlake are frustrated with a plan to develop a storage facility near their homes. The proposed location is in an empty space between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated community of townhomes. The facility would be a recreational storage facility, for boats, cars and containers. The City of Chula Vista's planning department would have to approve the proposal. Homeowners are hoping they don't. Neighbors like Carmen Bermen say the plans are going to lower their property values and attract the wrong crowd. On Saturday, they started posting warning flyers around their community to warn other neighbors. Bermen was the first homeowner to notice the plans. She says the city had sent out two notices in 2016. The last notice arrived on Thanksgiving week. 10News obtained a copy of that notice letting homeowners know they had until November 26th to send in any written comments or petitions. The vote would take place on November 27th. After emailing the city, residents say officials told them they'd have a public hearing in January on the issue, instead of voting on it in closed session. 10News reached out to the city for comment on this issue, a spokesperson told us it's up to the planning department to put the item on the agenda for the community to go and express their concerns during public comment. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of fatally stabbing a man during a road-rage dispute in the South Bay is due in court for pre-trial motions Monday. Rickey Smith, 60, is accused of stabbing 36-year-old Horace Williams to death as Williams sat in his van. According to police, the incident happened on November 27, 2018 along Sweetwater Road. Witnesses told police Smith was following Williams’ van as the two yelled at each other. Witnesses told police the maneuver caused the crash. Police say Smith then got out of his truck and stabbed Williams. (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego and Regional Airport Authority have reached an agreement over a fee that threatened to delay the revitalization of Chula Vista's waterfront.The Airport Authority agreed to withdraw from a lawsuit challenging a .50 rental car fee added to car rentals at the San Diego International Airport to fund a parking garage for the Chula Vista Bayfront project.Under the settlement, the Port also agreed to a number of provisions, "that protect a number of Airport Authority interests."RELATED: Dispute over airport fee could delay Chula Vista Bayfront project“We have reached a resolution that addresses the funding mechanism for a parking facility that will serve the public for many years to come. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — The Sweetwater Union High School District will allow almost 300 employees to retire early, to balance a budget tens of millions of dollars in the red. "It was in our best interest to work with the district,” President Gene Chavira of the Sweetwater Education Association said. The teachers’ union president said this is part of the district’s "Budget Solutions Plan." They first added two furlough days to all staff this school year. In November, the Board of Trustees also agreed to offer employees who are 50 years or older and have worked for the district for at least 10 years, the option to resign then retire from the district. Eligible staff members were given two options for bonuses: Leave at the end of the year (December 2018) to receive 85 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years; or leave at the end of the school year (June 2019) to receive 60 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years. At the last union election, Chavira said 87 percent of the union members voted for the district’s plan.By Wednesday’s deadline, nearly 300 employees signed up for the early retirement package. One hundred forty-four are teachers, and the rest are either school staff or management. Of the 144 teachers, 94 of them have chosen to leave in December 2018. While some voiced the concern of teachers leaving in the middle of the school year, Chavira said the district employs many capable teachers who are qualified.“If one your teachers was the teacher that left, then someone else is going to take it. And in most cases, it's someone that's already there, who will assume those classes,” Chavira said. While the hope is the change from a seasoned to a potentially less-experienced teacher in the middle of the school year will not affect student success, the district said the finances made sense. According to the current salary schedule, veteran teachers get paid as much as 8,000 a year, compared to new hires at ,000. "In the long run, it's a savings,” Chavira said.
