(KGTV) - Instead of planning for a wedding, loved ones of a Camp Pendleton marine were holding a funeral this Memorial Day weekend.From the moment Kathleen Bourque met Conor McDowell off a dating app last summer in Washington D.C., it was electric."Insane, crazy, passionate ... He has a huge heart and always puts others before himself, and I was really drawn to that," said Kathleen.Four days later, the graduate of The Citadel asked her to move to San Diego as he reported for duty at Camp Pendleton. She said yes. During the cross-country trip, she wondered aloud, 'What are we doing?'""He said, 'Kathleen, trust is a choice ... We're both insane, but at least we're insane together, and give them something to talk about," said Kathleen.Together, they moved into an apartment in Cardiff and their love grew. Just before Conor, 24, left for a 10-day training maneuver earlier this month, he called his mother and told her the engagement ring made with grandma's diamond's was almost ready."He said,'When I return from maneuvers, I'm going to formally propose to Kathleen, I said that's so wonderful,'" said Susan Flanigan, Conor's mother. He was a person who lived his life to the fullest with great kindness, love and integrity," said Flanigan."I am shattered. My heart has been ripped out of my chest. I was his life and he was mine. I have lost a part of myself in losing him," said Kathleen.This weekend, loved ones held a funeral in Conor's hometown in Maryland. The bagpipes he had wanted for his wedding played instead at his service."He was the strongest person I knew. He taught me how to find the strength I didn't know I even had," said Kathleen.A memorial will be held at Camp Pendleton in early June, before a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. (KGTV) — Police say they were tasked with breaking up a crowd of 50 to 100 beachgoers having a large party on Friday amid a ban on gatherings in the county due to the pandemic.Carlsbad Police say the large crowd of mostly young people was having a large party and drinking near the Rue Des Chateaux beach access point on North Ocean St. at about 6 p.m.Police said when they arrived, the crowd voluntarily dispersed and no fines were given.A witness who sent ABC 10News a photo of the scene said it's not the first time this has happened. The witness said that large gatherings and parties in their neighborhood and at the beach have become a daily occurrence. The county's public health order bans gatherings of any size involving individuals who are not from the same household. 804

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The dollar value racked up by the Apple store bandits is now climbing toward the million-dollar mark.Surveillance images from an Apple store in Carlsbad in May show a group of men in hoodies walking in and immediately getting to work."They quickly grab the products on display near the front of the store," said Mark Herrring, coordinator of the San Diego County Crime Stoppers program.Investigators believe the same men hit the same store in June and several times in July."They flee the store, usually to a vehicle that is waiting for them," said Herring.The thieves have apparently shopped around for local targets.  Authorities released more images from a similar case at an Apple store at Westfield North County on July 9.  Detectives believe the local cases are linked to other grab-and-runs from across the state this year."Currently there are  approximately 30 cases throughout the state. Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey passed away on Saturday, according to festival CEO Marian Goodell. He was 70 years old.Goodell made the announcement through a blog post on Burning Man's website. She says that Harvey suffered a massive stroke on April 4. He passed away peacefully on April 28 in San Francisco with family members at his side."Burning Man culture has lost a great leader and an inspiring mind," Goodell wrote in the blog post. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man were arrested in connection with the shooting death of a young man in Carlsbad, police announced Friday.Just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, police and fire crews were called to the 2300 block of Caringa Way in response to a report of an injured person at an apartment complex.The injured person, an 18-year-old man, was found in the complex’s courtyard with a gunshot wound, police said.Kelly, an apartment resident, told ABC 10News, “I was fixing dinner. I looked out the kitchen window and he was on the ground. I started performing CPR, but it was too late.”The victim was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was not released.Following an investigation, Carlsbad police detectives identified two people linked to the man’s death and arrested them.According to police, a 16-year-old girl was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of manslaughter and gross negligent discharge of a firearm.Gerardo Gonzalez, 19, of San Marcos, was booked into Vista Jail on a felony child endangerment charge.No other information was made available as the incident remains under investigation. 1186
